  1. There's a Discussion topic open right now titled "Hyperrealism" that critiques very high standards put up by some factions. Despite having some truth to it, I don't see it being as a huge and far reaching problem in the server. Instead I'd like to shift the discussion over to exactly the opposite end of the spectrum - surrealism. The difference between joining a legal faction that teaches you all you need to know for your roleplay through IG experiences and guides versus factions where you join and get no help because the entire faction is basically a GTA Online lobby. I know that IFM has taken steps to address the realism crisis, but it's too little too late. If we want to stop the carnage of 1930s level crime waves, we must make sure that ALL factions apply standards that match the way criminals operate in the 21st century. I bring you the consequences of not enforcing standards (or alternatively, enforcing standards that aren't even true today) as well as potential ways to stop it. Consequences: • Car loads of gang characters with (M) at the end of their names and checkered shirts on their body driving around entire LS looking for robbery victims. • Criminals murdering law enforcement officers en masse over something that would only land one or two of the gang members in prison for a week or so. • Criminals murdering each other en masse just to prove how "strong" they are and to protect their OOC ego. • Organized crime factions going on dick measuring competitions and causing wars with each other over it that would realistically end in both sides locked up for life. • Majority of criminal characters not even being afraid of prison or death. • Poor understanding of how crime actually works and engaging in practices that are outdated (shaking down businesses like its the 70s or doing hits in middle of the streets with assault rifles). • No fear of police investigations because cops are too busy chasing a car load of gang characters from the 1st point and will not have time to investigate organized crime. • More things that skipped my mind. Ways to fix it: • It should be mandated by the IFM that all factions and groups have up-to-date resources and guides in their Discord servers. This would eliminate the possibility of poor illegal RP due to not knowing the ropes. • Giving the law enforcement more tools and power to combat crime and investigate criminal activity. The LSSD has done a great job recently with their raids, but every time I read the press releases it is like "5 guns and 200 grams of cannabis were seized" which in GTA W's economy is basically pebbles. • Enabling drastic sentencing for things that are way too wild to be done IRL. For example, a murder of a law enforcement officer should pretty much warrant a CK if the perp is arrested. • Adding a section in Guides titled "IFM Approved Guides" which would feature RP guides for illegal RPers that are vetted by the IFM and considered to be "up to date" to today's criminal climate. • RPQM enforcement in faction portrayals. It doesn't even have to be RPQM investigating the reports made on factions. The person who reports a faction MUST provide proof and sources that the portrayal of reported illegal faction does not match reality. Warnings could be issued and if they are not adhered, faction can be force-archived. • Create initiatives and opportunities, both from OOC and IC standpoints for investigative journalism into crime. I would LOVE to see more crime journalists digging in and exposing facts about local criminal groups for the rest of the server to acknowledge ICly. • Try and change the culture of how players who roleplay characters that turn into informants are perceived. I will be honest, there would be way more characters flipping and giving up their buddies if it wasn't for the OOC friendships and OOC reputation. If you have RPed a character that snitched once, some factions might steer clear of even accepting you in the future. I have no idea how to change the culture, but I hope there are ways. If you have more to add to the topic, please comment, but do keep things civil and calm.

  3. What a backwards and horribly impolite, narrowminded and ignorant statement from someone labelled as a 'Lead Admin'. What is the purpose of roleplay? To play a role, develop a character, and to have fun. If there's individuals who will genuienly dedicate their time to roleplay such a niche scenario and actually immerse themselves, why not allow them to? I know a plethora of individuals that will genuienly log in to roleplay as Army NG\Air force NG in Fort Zancudo; from basic chewing the fat RP to the more indepth mechanical aspect. In my opinion, and my mindset, is to invite avenues of furthered RP and broaden the quality of RP in the community than to gatekeep and restrict RP. Fair enough, suspicion of people being idiots and trolls in such a role of a faction, and individuals incorrectly treating the faction as an opportunity to 'look cool' IG, treat it like some Hollywood-esc scenario, or aforementioned 'CoD' RP, should be vetted and removed from such a potential recruitment process. But if there's a dedicated group, even if it's small, to develop RP, why not allow it? As stated already, everyone thought Port Authority would be dead as it's very niche. It's doing pretty well. People also thought Coroners would be dead after a month, they're still around. Same with Pillbox Hill Medical Centre; "Oh they'll die after a week." and they're currently fantastic and a golden path to take if you want medical RP. Surpassing expectations of many. Such a faction has no need to be LEO. NG aren't law enforcement. They have details that do LEO activities, sure, but that's not what people are asking for. I personally would go hard against having such a faction step on the toes of any LEO faction, that's ridiculous and inappropriate, as well as diluting an already stuffed market of roleplay. If such faction was to be a thing, forbid the ability for the faction to step on the toes of any LEO faction; like how SAPR initially started. They were to be a purely passive faction, law enforcement would be limited completely; they just so happened to be park rangers with guns; promoting passive and friendly, non LEO related RP in the sticks and desert. Last year, me and 6-7 others were in SD SED\SWT drove to Fort Zancudo to train at the various facilities there. On the route, the front gate we came across two\three RPers in MTP\Multicam with berets RPing as the gate guardians. And they did a bang up job, they were fun to engage with and it surprised the lot of us. They did fantastic in their portrayal. When we departed to do what we initially came to do, we'd see them be ajailed by admins for RPing such a role, which is a massive shame. The admin team seem determined to gatekeep legal factions to the enth degree, restricting RP for individuals who genuienly want to develop a character and produce avenues of RP for others to get involved, but seemingly allow a dozen Davis\Chamberlain Hills\Rancho gangs who's differences vary in only name, whilst also allowing another dozen "Piss and Shitters MC" to continue. Imo, if a group are serious in developing this as a faction, and wish for it to happen to purely have small, niche passive RP, allow it to happen: keep a watch on the members, and allow it to expand like how Port Authority has. If recruitment of members and roleplay quality is an issue, with legal FM\admin team in general worried about it being full of trolls or individuals who think military life is Hurt Locker\Jarhead\[Insert Hollywood war movie], restrict the recruitment to those who are veterans IRL and currently serving. Who's gonna be hurting from the broader community to such a faction restricted to a very specific area?

  5. how does realism cause self-insertion into roleplay? i'd say it does quite the opposite. same thing applies to high faction standards, i'd dare to say that it's rather a good thing that certain factions double-check their prospective members in terms of the rp quality that they present.

  6. As we move into a new year, Pillbox continues to work towards a key objective in it’s mission statement, being that of continued focus of raising awareness and educating the wider community on matters commonly overlooked or misunderstood. January 4th brings us to World Braille Day, a time in which we stand back and look at how this resource promotes inclusivity and function, and how it has enabled the visually impaired population to read and communicate. We look back before it’s creation and ask “how” and appreciate the struggles before. Did you know that less people know braille than you might think? A study within the last 12 years denotes that only 10 percent of visually impaired American’s can read braille. The introduction of modern-day technology and the help of awareness campaigns is helping to reach more people that need it. This is why awareness and further research is vital in the healthcare industry, so we may better arm communities with resources to aid them where needed. Looking at the impact braille can have on life, it’s important to continue to spread awareness so we can bring that opportunity to more people. What is braille? Braille is a tactile system of raised dots on a surface that an individual may use to interpret words, based on symbols within what is known as a “braille cell”. Each braille cell consists of six raised dots, which are then arranged in two rows of three. Each of the raised bumps is identified with a number, one through size and with this arrangement, there are sixty-four possible combinations which can then be used as an alphabet, as well as representing symbols or numbers. Below is a representation of the alphabet in uncontracted braille. What is the difference between uncontracted and contracted braille? Uncontracted braille is also known as grade 1 braille, which serves to provide an individual with basic dot combinations. Beginners will start with uncontracted brail and eventually progress to learning the more complex form of the alphabet, contracted braille. This uses the same letters, numbers and punctuation as uncontracted, however it introduces a collection of signs to represent the most common words or letter grouping. This in turn, allows for shorthand and takes both less space on a surface, but also allows for faster recognition and reading once an individual is accustomed. As an example, there are “braille contractions” for words like “the” or “for”, and there are also groupings for letter combinations like “ing” and “sh”. The human brain is able to piece these together very quickly and with continued exposure and training, it becomes second nature. Braille is very diverse and is considered purely an alphabet, not a language. It can be used to write almost any language, and there are braille versions of languages like Chinese and Arabic. What can you do? Recognizing braille signifies inclusivity and diversity and the focus of January 4th is focused on raising awareness for the issues that may impact those in our society that are visually impaired or blind. Louis Braille transformed the blind community and provided vital accessibility resources that promotes equal opportunities. By highlighting braille and explaining more about what it is, and how it might be used, we strive to make more attempts to promote understanding and inclusion. Don't stay quiet. Share your understanding of braille, engage with your local community and get involved. You never know how you may impact someone's life, and perhaps you are the one to open the door for someone else. Educate children and teenagers in your local schools, demonstrate understanding yourself so others may follow your example. It is important to recognize, understand and educate.

  7. Ppl are crazy yeah. They're unable to discern the difference between making your emote interesting and semi realistic. You don't need to be a IRL mechanic to know you need a wrench, a jack and a new wheel to change one. That's all you should need to know to fulfill an emote. Hell back when I was a mechanic late 2020/early 2021 I wouldn't even emote half of what I was doing. Customers found it far more engaging to be invited in to banter with me about inane subjects while I wandered around their car doing various fitting animations and a light emote every now n then. Used to get ppl spending half an hour to an hour just chatting with me, completely having forgotten about their vehicle half of the time. Mechanic RP has fallen far since then. Now everybody just wanna type 6 emotes of hyper technical rubbish nobody can even see lol

  8. Was a long night at The Roadhouse and The Corner the night before, Annabel slept in hoping to enjoy a relaxing day but was she wrong. She woke up to her phone being blown up by Jaelyn. Sam was murdered by someone and that was all she was told. Jaelyn started ordering her around and giving her no details, thinking she was still the naive girl she once was when they were younger. But times had changed, and Annabel had to grow up when Jaelyn left her outside Odessa. She had found her voice and knew how to use it. The two argued back and forth slightly but ultimately Annabel did what Jaelyn asked... at least until she found cars parked outside the trailer. She called Doc and Jaelyn, telling them what she saw. They came and got her, escorting her to the local motels. Sadly, Annabel wasn't done, she began fighting with Jaelyn again... wanting to know what was really going on, what Jaelyn got involved in once again, and why Jaelyn never trusted her and Axel. But as usual Jaelyn did what she thought was best, she hid everything and just walked away. Annabel pissed off and feeling rebellious left. She met up with a fellow Texan, Darcy, and found herself in a familiar place... on a roof and doing drugs. It was only a matter of time before her other bad habits began to resurface and the shy girl became the one thing, she hid and hated the most.

  11. Unfortunately the philosophy on faction management is that legal and illegal are two extremely seperated worlds that never work together. Pretty much every Government management faction, (Senate, LS city GOV etc) has a 'no corruption' rule. Factions that want to privatize parts of government duties, like a Private EMS company are stricken down a lot. Same goes with other sections of roleplay where the corruption of the private-public sector intermingling, like industry, is rare, far in between, and almost never supported.

  14. I completely second this topic. Last year, roleplaying as a legal character was challenging at times due to the crime waves that you've mentioned. My character could hardly work without risking getting maimed or killed outside of his workplace. Some incidents were so ridiculous that two different people got gunned down on the same spot within just a couple hours of each other. Having a violent city in today's America is totally fine, but I find it's exaggerated to the point of broken immersion. What you've written about factions resonates with me as well. I've been on GTA World for over a year and I've made a point of actually avoiding factions, to the extent of refusing IC and OOC invites. I have made an exception to this rule only just recently. A lot of problems on this server would be resolved if it wasn't for the OOC controversy and interpersonal drama between players and their various groups.

  15. Because hyper-realism requires the player to have an extensive, in-depths OOC knowledge of a specific domain. Unfortunately, given that not everyone can become an RL mechanic just for RP, it means the IC jobs will end up being mostly opened to people who have OOC experience in a specific domain. Honestly, I wouldn't care. If an EMT /me's that they put gauze on a wound, it doesn't fundamentally decreases the quality of the RP. The interaction, the implication, ... won't be affected by what is just a minor OOC issue that we can easily write off as "whatever". Only a lunatic would go and say "you said gauze instead of packing! Ha! Reported to RPQM and CK now!!!". In the end, the question is, why do you RP? On a purely personal level, I see RP as a cooperative game that's based on interaction. I could send 30 emotes to someone about strategic marketing development, it would be fucking boring, there would be no interaction, and it would bring little to nothing to anyone. And I doubt people around would really enjoy it, which is why I kind of share @Mahitto's sentiment when they say "such role-play is unenjoyable and long for spectators and involved parties as well.". There was one bartender that was really cool, but their place hasn't opened in a long while. They were somewhat knoweldgeable when it comes to cocktail making, but the emotes weren't about super technical gestures - in fact, they were pretty damn simple. /me pours this, pours that. What made the place really fun and cool, however, wasn't the technical aspects of cocktail making: it was the way the emotes were phrased (pretty damn funny sometimes), and the way the bartender was chatting up customers, making comments on their own choices or mistakes, their clumsiness sometimes, their reaction when people kept ordering the same boring whiskey neat all day long, etc. It gave fun insights on the character, his traits, his moods, and it made people want to engage with him in cool RP 🙂 The "technical" aspects of cocktail making were just a framework around which some nice RP was built. The RP was front and center: not the technical stuff nobody cares about, except hyperenthusiasts.

  16. Could be considered unrealistic but I've always thought the idea of PD/SD offering on-foot beat cop positions would be cool, LEO positions made specifically for tackling petty crime and interacting with the community, something fresh and actually beneficial to neighbourhood RP instead of the boring VOIP shootout/pursuit meta cops seem to circulate around. Nothing like an obvious argument-turning-fight between a group of people or drivers arguing over a fender bender being completely ignored by cops because it's not a shootout so therefore it's not worth their time. Never liked how LEO factions require mics to be a proper cop on a text-based RP server if you're not suffering from a disability, If I wanted to use coms and pretend I'm a cool dude with my impractical tacti-cool military jargon I'd hop on Squad or HLL, not GTAW. Let us misfits fill in that passive cop RP that seems to be woefully missing.
