  1. I'll make it very transparent what our goals are in the present and the future. The OOC goal is listed below directly from our manual. It's one of the first things you see when you open our manual. When we first launched, our goal was also to fill the niche of corrections roleplay - unfortunately, the realities of how jail roleplay works set in. I've made it very clear to our faction members that if we intended to launch patrol-focused first, Sandy Shores would NOT be our primary station. We would NOT have established a full infrastructure for custody operations. We would have told everyone involved it was our intention. It was very much an experiment. I made that very clear from the beginning to everyone involved - this faction is always a work in progress, and at least for the first year, things will always be very much in flux, from policies, to procedures, to direction. The welcome letter people receive when they join our faction ensures they come to an understanding in this regard. And as noted, on average, deputies are present in the jail at least 10 hours out of the day. This is something we track. We fully intend to push for more people of European and Oceanic timezones to apply next recruitment drive.
  2. A note about Paleto - that station isn't fully mapped in yet and we intend to eventually expand in that direction as the faction grows.
  3. SHU times can never go beyond 24 hours, but generally we go with long times because we don't have an automatic release system right now. Either way, it becomes too cumbersome to have fights kick off every 30 minutes after someone is released from the SHU. The point of it is to cause people to be more tactical with their yard attacks and hits. Tattoos/haircuts/etc. customization is planned but that's something development needs to handle.
  4. blatantly copied the title of pd's thread Hi. I'm Bospy. It's been approximately 2 months since the Sheriff's Department launched and since then, the faction has changed and grown considerably. Initially a project started in 2017 under the flag of SADOC, the idea of a state prison (or in our case, a county jail) has been kicked around since the beginning of this server. It wasn't until fall of last year (specifically, August) that things got kicked into gear and I took position as Sheriff, at which point our faction transitioned into fulfilling the role of a county-based law enforcement organization with a unique concept - we'd also be managing a jail. Since then, @lambchops @Jonesy and I have been running the show and have gone through plenty of trials and tribulations to get here. Several people of course contributed along the way, including old FM, but faces change. If people don't know the scope of what we manage, the Sheriff's Department has both a patrol and jail-based component. Our faction is much smaller than the Police Department but if you have engaged in crime, you may have encountered us at some point. This thread can be used to address any concerns, criticisms, comments, or other ideas that community members have on how to improve the Sheriff's Department. Although we have plenty of internal resources (such as inmate access) to facilitate roleplay, a lot of the time this isn't fully transparent. I encourage people interested in jail roleplay to register on our forums and join our Discord. In addition, you're welcome to make general points or bring things up about the faction. However, respectfully, I do ask that if you have problems with roleplay quality or specific individuals, you instead forward that information to my inbox. Airing out dirty laundry in a public setting outside of a forum report is not an acceptable format for those sorts of complaints. If you have complaints about specific individual's roleplay quality, you are welcome to put them forward to @Jonesy or @Keane ---- 2021 update from @Jonesy! Hi folks, it's been over a year since we've grown. Our faction has grown to north of 160 players and we've expanded in various areas including completely revamping the jail. We're always looking for feedback and we will do our best to respond to any questions and concerns ASAP!
  5. (video here is actually pretty fucked up discretion advised!!!)
  6. I'm not forcing my small custody division, which has not yet launched, to dedicate their time to two separate wings - one of which will be completely inactive and boring, the other of which will need constant oversight. Once again, you're looking way too deeply into this. Prison gangs should be more than capable of policing their own interactions with female characters. There is no difference between this and gangs policing their own interactions with police - on a real life basis, gangs do not have their members arrested for violent felonies and those members return 3 days later. Where are the stats showing that most of the server are female roleplayers? Of those, how many are criminals? Of those, how many are arrested? Of those, how many are actually interested in long-term jail roleplay? They can still wait their sentence out offline. It's a jail, not a prison. And the mapping doesn't accommodate this idea. It is equally unrealistic for us to have an ambiguously coed facility with segregated blocks as it is with a non-segregated facilities. Males and females do not end up in the same facilities in real life when they're awaiting trial in a municipality like Los Santos. It is equally unrealistic that we don't have a prison system. It is equally unrealistic that my character wasn't elected. It is equally unrealistic that the Sheriff's Department has not yet already existed. It is equally unrealistic that there's only 300 people in the big city of Los Santos. It is equally unrealistic that there's houses and properties that are shells, essentially part of a large ghost town that nobody interacts with. It is equally unrealistic that there's no wildlife. In general: If we acknowledge the gender separation rather than leave it ambiguous, then we would be FORCED to completely isolate female characters 24/7 from males. A total of maybe 2-3 female characters would be ISOLATED in their own block for their entire jail sentence. I cannot overstate how incredibly boring this would be for my faction and for the people who are isolated. It would be an OOC punishment for female roleplayers. Don't roleplay it as being a coed jail. Treat it AMBIGUOUSLY. Do not acknowledge the nature of it being "coed." Nobody is forcing you to. Prison gangs do not need to acknowledge that females are on the yard, just as females don't need to acknowledge they're on a male-dominant yard. People do this all the time with gang-members returning to the streets after being fatally shot. People do this 24/7 with past injuries. If everyone role-played all of their historical injuries, the majority of the city would be invalids. That said, this thread is about a faction announcement. If this becomes an issue that compromises realism, I can guarantee that we would fix it immediately. I highly doubt this will compromise realism at all. In fact, I doubt it will be something people even notice.
  7. You're looking waaaaay too deeply into this. Take a step back and relax, this doesn't change the prison gang dynamic at all. The only reason females aren't being segregated on an OOC basis is because it'd be a waste of resources right now. Don't delve into the potential ramifications this would have on Sureno gang politics. None of that changes, nor is anyone forcing you to change any of that. Nothing is being retconned. Leave this ambiguous. It's the same exact concept as you not dying every time you die in-game. It's the same thing as being able to ignore people committing murder, getting arrested, and come back some time later.
  8. There are coed jails in the USA. Co-ed prisons do not exist, but co-ed jails do. That said, there isn't any in LA. Our faction is launching into a completely new and unique project. While we definitely could separate females and males into two separate cellblocks right now, it's too much of a risk for us to do right away while lacking a lot of the necessary resources to do it. Separating female characters would be a mutual drain, because females would be restricted in what they could do in the jail system (we'd have to lock them up solely in that cellblock by the nature of the mapping, essentially they'd be entirely isolated), and custody players would need to man a cellblock where only 1-2 players are around at any one time. Nobody is saying this is something we're against doing now or in the future, this is just a minuscule issue for us right now. Separation based on gender would make things needlessly complicated at this early stage where everything hinges on a successful launch. We are not against doing this in the future, in fact I'd like to do it when the LSSD grows and there's more players, but doing it right now would essentially be an OOC punishment for female roleplayers. There'd be 1-2 female characters in a single block. However, I can guarantee this - if it becomes an issue of immersion, we will correct it right away. But I don't think this will be nearly as much of an issue as many people here believe it will be. The community I came from had coed prison for upwards of 7 years and throughout the entirety of my serious prison roleplay "career" there was really never an issue for gang members in the system, nor were females "brutalized". You can self-police your interactions with female characters on an internal level. You can even ignore them if you want. The people we have in this faction have upwards of 10 years of prison roleplay experience among us. We are telling you this is not going to be an issue. If it becomes one for whatever reason, we will change it as soon as possible. Many long-term prisoners transition in and out of the county jail system in LA due to a court-ordered reorganization scheme after the federal government ruled against the CDCR in a lawsuit. A prison is not in the cards for right now, but a long-term prison-gang community is equally likely to form inside of the county jail on the basis of realism - LA county jail is filled to the brim with high-up gang-members who abuse the courts. In fact, one could argue the LA county jail system is worse in some respects than CDCR prisons. I recommend players read up on some of the ACLU lawsuits.
  9. More drug addicts, preferably. Live in tents.
  10. I'd much prefer it to be an expensive option for character development than the situation on other places wherein the economy was essentially Weimar Germany in the era of the economic crisis/wallpaper money. Wealth is something that you need to sort of climb the ladder for. Some clubs are prestigious, some are shit, some are hard to get into. This is a cool distinction.
  11. ^ From a thread about criminal roleplay. Nobody is arguing in favor of 1:1 portrayals here. If it were possible to do and you could functionally implement it, it'd be cool to do. But there's a lot of functionality issues here. It is entirely the prerogative of a legal faction leader to choose what fits their faction and what doesn't. If that means disregarding real life materials because it would be detrimental or too difficult to implement, so be it. If that means creating a division or template which has no real life equivalent, so be it. If that means mirroring things 1:1? So be it. I'm going to quit posting here, though, because this thread isn't my territory. I'd just like to see any mentions of the LSSD doing X or Y to be quashed, because nobody knows what we're doing outside of me and my people at the top.
  12. Portraying the LASD =/= 1:1 representation of the LASD. You're arguing semantics. It is quite literally impossible to portray every aspect of the LASD, and in many cases we're doing things they definitely don't do in real life (for instance, parole is purely something the CDCR focuses on.) Even if that was the case, if we had the correct mentality, that's all that would matter at the end of the day. We've taken plenty of liberties and will continue to do so. If you're unaware, there's many FM practices to encourage people to portray Los Angeles gangs and organizations. That is across the entire board. This isn't some new trend we're breaking into - it's something we're following based on server practice and preference. I am not a purist, and like I said, we're doing plenty which the real life LASD doesn't do. This is already being done. You're making the assumption that I am a purist. Once again, I'm not a purist. Regardless, this thread is about the LSPD.
  13. I didn't say 1:1, that's the exact opposite of my argument. My argument is specifically against representing an agency 1:1, because it's impossible. Functionality is infinitely more important, which is something I'm trying to drill into people. You've assumed my position is the alternate from what it actually is. In the context of my spiel about good intentions, I meant players who have a correct mindset - which is to say, they are not playing to win. If they're a shitty roleplayer, they can ultimately learn to be a good roleplayer. Obviously, they aren't going to advance, and if the roleplay is terrible, they likely won't be in the faction in the first place. I agree with you. Keep in mind, my organization doesn't even exist in-game yet, but when I talk about mindset I am talking about ensuring people are willing to compromise will illegal faction roleplayers and give them leeway, rather than playing to win or force a result. "Mindset" when I use it isn't so nebulous as to refer to realism. It simply means that the players you get aren't shitheads trying to jam up criminal roleplayers. It is an IC goal to catch bad guys, but that's shouldn't be a player's OOC goal. A player's OOC goal should be portraying a cop and having fun.
  14. Touching upon this point, there is often a "purist" argument many people make, but there's bigger fish to fry than trying to emulate things 1:1 in some cases. While I do think it is a good thing to mirror the department, I think rightfully Smokey is focusing on functionality first and foremost. This is our focus in the LSSD - while we do aim to portray the LASD, ultimately I'd like to see our faction exist first. After we exist, it will be something we focus on more, but you need to make compromises. It's unfair to compare the LSSD and LSPD on this point, as we're intended to be two different beasts. Although we'll share some functions, it's been thoroughly plotted out to avoid any sort of malicious competition. Let's not delude ourselves into thinking it's by any means easy to change a faction's mindsets or attitudes quickly. It's a process, a long-term one, and a big investment You can make your faction completely 1:1 with the real life department but ultimately none of that means shit if the people in the faction don't have the right mindset. I was a big reformer in other places, and I'll tell you more than anyone I was a big fan of many changes at those places, but those changes didn't happen just because people wanted to make sure they followed the LAPD's pursuit protocol or divisions. The most important thing drilled into people's heads was mindset. That doesn't come from realism, mindset comes from teaching, and what Smokey has said to me and in this thread is he intends to teach people mindset and instill a culture which avoids play-to-win attitudes. I was closer to many of the reformers at those places than other people here, and I'll tell you this - mindset was more important to them than anything else. Is a roleplayer malicious? That's all that matters. If it can be taught, it will be taught. If people have good intentions, then they will succeed. Once mindset is worked out, realism can become a focus.
  15. When you're connecting, press the "home" button and wait for it to connect by itself. That always works for me.
  16. I upgraded my RAM and my stuttering ended completely, so I think that the client really just has shitty optimization. Unfortunately that's all you can really guarantee will stop the stuttering.
  17. If this were the real world, the only people being issued CCWs would be doctors and lawyers. LA County is a "shall-issue" county and they don't bother to issue gun licenses unless you're best friends with a few political fixers. The most draconian firearms laws in the entire country are in LA County.
  18. The majority of money comes from in-character interaction. The fundamental truth is this - you will never earn enough money from any script-based job to bring you what you're looking for. The great majority of funds come from roleplay - that is, criminal interaction, legal factions, businesses, entrepreneurship, and unique ideas. You can spend all of your time on the server grinding away at a trucker job or you can invest yourself in a niche roleplay scheme. Nobody from the criminal POV, or really even legal POV is going to say no to some guy asking to do a favor on their behalf - provided they have a favor that needs doing. Roleplay is the most rewarding way of earning money. Hell, if you don't care about it on an OOC level, your character could sell themselves for sex and make a pretty penny. You need to develop the creativity of a person affected by poverty. If you're roleplaying a criminal character - what schemes would a criminal think of doing? Laundering? Scams? Robberies? On my criminal character, I was always looking for the next mark. You need to immerse yourself in that mindset. Who can I rob today? What will the risks be? How can my character fuel his drug habit? I'm not encouraging you to go on robbery sprees with no roleplay, what I'm saying to do is develop a character. Eventually through your IC interactions, you'll build relationships with people who do have money, and you'll be paid to do them favors, or you'll learn about opportunities. A good mafia documentary demonstrated the criminal underworld from the lower levels. It had nothing to do with any of the gaudy rich shit shown in many Hollywood shows. It was mostly just shady guys trying to figure out how to make what amounted to a little over a minimum wage job doing menial schemes. You don't get rich from it, but the connections is where you'll earn. But at the end of the day, the money isn't what you'll find fun if you start investing in your character. It's the roleplay.
