Blaine County & It's portrayal (?)

Something I and @DS ran into a lot running DRD. I had to teach a lot of people how southerners/country boys actually talk. We never roleplayed straight out of the south as Dirt Road Dollars, we roleplayed Country Boys. Country is Country Wide. No one in the Country, in any 50 states, says "Howdy" on normal dialect, unless they're some like 90 year old guy in Texas, and even than it's kind of far-fetched. No one says yer, and all that anymore. Country boys talk normal, with an accent. A lot of people use to do that back in the day in the Sheriff's Department as well, but that's obviously not a thing here since day one. They might have different words for certain things, but no one talks like they're from the Wild West anymore.

I loved roleplaying in Blaine County with Dirt Road Dollars, and obviously still frequently do as a Deputy Sheriff. It's one of the best places in my opinion because it's normally a closer-knit community that knows eachothers characters a lot. No one wants to intrude on your roleplay, but we just ask you to not make yourself look silly with the Wild West dialect.

  People absolutely say 'yer', it's not even country these days it's in the city. 'Yer', 'Yerp' 'Yert', are all common vernacular where I'm from. Granted, I'm from a major city in the North East but still, regardless, in terms of borderline racist personalities. I live in a fucking state that fought for the Union, never seceded and was never occupied by the Confederacy, but people still rock confederate flags not even 20 minutes outside the city. Like you said, country is something that exists all over the country, personally, I don't think the accents are nearly as immersion breaking as it is when someone looks at me and goes, "Have a good one, mate." or "See you around, lad."

  Also, if you think the country accent is dead then clearly you have never spoken to people from the Bayou in Louisiana. The accent is essentially derived from uneducated white folk, and it absolutely does exist in parts where people are still uneducated and never learn proper diction. Also, while we are on the topic of discussion here. The idea that we are trying to simulate real-life is so far fetched to me I don't even entertain it. GTA world does not feel like I'm playing a character within in my real world, it feels like I'm playing a character in Grand Theft Auto, which in my opinion is what we should be striving for. GTA's take on modern America is honestly more honest than we realize, we are spoiled, overly self indulgent and arrogant. The contrast between the city's way of living and the rural way of living is substantial and honestly the greatest divide we face.

  I'll repeat myself once more, cause there's nothing I hate more than when someone shit's on someone else's character for how they want to portray them. The server is full of Europeans playing either Europeans or Americans who speak like a European. I've been roleplaying for 10 years, I've been an American for nearly 23 years (my entire life). Do not get caught up on the semantics, cause if we wanted to portray actual characters emulating the real world right now. 99.9% of the server would work a shitty day job, maybe swipe right on Tinder til they found a hook-up or browsing some shitty forum. Have fun, don't take yourself too seriously and focus on creating a good story as opposed to a hyper-realistic one.

i’ll comment on accents since Blaine county is pretty ok in emulating Desert Shores/Bakersfield. Rural California does have what we call “Okies” or Southern pioneers who’ve lived in the area for generations and south like they’re from East Arkansa, thats as close as I ever heard to a Southern accent.

Californians don’t really have accents, even rural folks. I’ll comment on a few things;

yer is a stereotype of how Southerners pronouce “you’re” in Movies. Yes people in Maine say yer, and so do Northern Midwesterners. They have weird accents in general.

The Cajun accent is wonderful but not a typical Country accent. It’s widely different and extremely unique to its region.

People in Desert Shores, which yes, looks exactly like Sandy Shores, look below, sound kinda funny, but not Southern. They empathize “O” sounds but otherwise sound like a typical American standard accent seen in popular media.

Finally I’ll comment on portrayal. I’m totally fine with people playing exaggerated characters. Infact I implore people too. Exaggerated characters are the absolute best. A normal Joe is not memorable unless they’re funny. However I have one main issue with Blaine County portrayal;

they’re too cool.

when I think Blaine County, I think rare gem salesmen, Native Americans, alien hunters, ghost hunters and ghost tour guides. Used car salesmen, casino owners, farmers, meth entrepreneurs and loggers.

What I end up seeing is this slick cowboy who runs guns. Gun runners are fun, but theres so many funny and unique ideas you can take from the Rural west to base a character off than a Cowboy. My issue with Blaine is less an issue with Blaine and more my issue serverwide. Theres a million other ideas to play as when using America as a background. I just wish we had more diversity in background in the County. I want someone to wave a crystal and take my aura when I try to get my tires changed. Desert shores/palms/bakersfield is famously kinda weird. I just wish that weirdness translated ingame.

EDIT: most people in GTAW’s Blaine County are hilariously funny and great characters. Only a small minority falls on my hated “too cool to still live in the South” character trope which isnt very memorable. Most people are conspiracy theory whackjobs, bikers, blue collar workers, meth dealers and other amazing character ideas that represent the Rural West of America wonderfully in a really weird and memorable way. To those characters, keep it up!

Yeah, but not everyone's roleplaying from the Bayou in Louisiana. Obviously there are some heavy accents, I never said the "country" accent is dead. The point being like the main post said, not everyone talks like that.  The south has a lot of different accents/specific slurs etc. But yeah I agree, the mate and lad is probably the most annoying thing ever. I also, have never heard someone say 'yer' 'yerp 'yert'. IRL? That's new. Sounds like something Cardi B would say. I don't live near a city, though.

I'm not sure why you're trying to attack me lmfao. I've been roleplaying since 2007 and I know how shit's done. I'm also the last person to really tell somebody how to roleplay their character, but some of the accents and the "mate and lad" type shit (like the stereotypes people do with redneck characters like "Howdy", in my opinion, is just as bad as "mate and lad"), on the server it kinda gets annoying. Telling someone how to portray their character & telling them to roleplay realistically are two different things, but yeah. It's not something I'll lose sleep over, regardless.

"I live in a fucking state that fought for the Union, never seceded and was never occupied by the Confederacy, but people still rock confederate flags not even 20 minutes outside the city." Country is Country Wide. There's rednecks in California, there's rednecks in Alaska, there's rednecks in New York. They're everywhere. Just the way it is.

I think we should just be gratefull there's ANY rp in Blaine County. When I first moved there on my char it was as dead as a do-do.

I can honestly excuse the hillbilly RP, I think it makes things a little more fun and wild. I've noticed most of the RPers who RP in Blaine aren't native to Sandy anyway - usually they come from the county in other states. So most of them are RPing their accents correctly.

I rped in Sandy Shores, in local tattoo shop, before it got shot up. Then my char answered an ad about work and moved to Morningwood.

Aren't you the same guy that killed the entire patch membership of the Gravedwellers because they were trying to vote in a new president, and was then removed from the faction by Nervous?

Aren't you the same guy that returned to his body after getting PK'd by the Vagos to pickup your Uzi, and got caught?

Why are immigrants from other states moving to what is supposed to be one of the poorest parts of the country? Does that make sense to you?

Does it make sense to you that most people in county are roleplaying county as if its Dixieland? What do you think that rural people talk like?

I don't think its ridiculous to expect a higher quality of roleplay from the area, just as how we want better RP from PD, Davis, and everywhere else.

Not even going to begin to explain myself to you.

I must live in your head rent free Ted.

What's there to explain behind the time that you were killed and looted your dead body?

Regardless, again, Blaine County is most comparable to the Inland Empire of Southern California. Said area, in the real world, is not inhabited by Southerners who decided to move to somewhere poorer.
