Manual Vehicle Transmission

Short description:

Make vehicles not automatically swap gears but force the player to shift them using NUMPAD buttons/numbers to adjust the gear accordingly. Since I am not sure if a reverse gear would be possible, being on the first gear could allow you to reverse.

Detailed description:

In addition to the short description, all vehicles would have different amount of gears (naturally) and the shift timing threshold could varry between each vehicle ( for example: in general the 1st to 2nd gear speed threshold would be around 30mph, 2nd to 3rd 50mph, 3rd to 4th 75, 4th to 5th 90, 5th to 6th around 110). If the player shifts a gear too early the engine would stall, turning off while maintaing the current gear which the player would have to swap back to 1st gear(or go a gear lower to adjust current vehicle speed) to start the engine again. In addition, the upgraded transmissions would allow the player to increase those shifting thresholds and change gears earlier than normal.

I am personally a fan of also having to hold a specific keybind down like E for example to act like a clutch, requiring you to have it pressed when shifting gears. Failing to do so would stall the engine, turning off.

Additionally it would be a nice cruise control for the vehicle, if you desire to control your speed while in town without having to press and let go of W you would simply hold it at say, 2nd gear to maintain a speed of around 50mph without having to worry about sleeping on it and press it for longer than intended and end up 15 mph higher than you would want.

How would your suggestion improve the server?:

This suggestion would add another unique feature that I believe not many servers have and would add that extra touch of realism, complexity and handling skills that are required when driving a vehicle other than simply hold the W button to accelerate and the S button to brake. In addition I think it would add more exciment to new players especially who come in and take the driving exam, not only teaching them to stay under a certain speed limit and run through checkpoints but also teach them how to actually use a vehicle.

Additional information:

This suggestion might be too time consuming to implement but the main goal of this thread is not to exactly implement the feature as it is but to add the core and inspire ideas to the development team. However, I do hope to see a manual transmission system implemented in the server. Having to manually set the shifting thresholds for most of the vehilces could take time and on top of that modify these speeds with the transmission upgrades can take even more. If anybody has a better idea or a correction or even something to add in this idea I would be more than happy to add it to this main thread with credits of course. Looking forward to feedback!

As far as I know, the majority of US vehicles are automatic anyway, aren’t they?

I can see some people enjoying this but I think it would be more tedious than anything. Perhaps making it optional would be better. This is a role play server after all, not a driving sim.

What about the automatic vehicles? And I think a big problem would be switching from 6th to reverse, pressing CTRL 6 times would be really dumb and a bit too much.

The automatic vehicles if specified in the actual GTA wiki could stay automatic. And as I said my main goal is not to exactly implement the system as it but to inspire it. To directly respond to your pressing CTRL 6 times, the shifting could instead be pressing numpad numbers, so u can go from 6 to 1 instantly, however if you're in 6th gear and u just press num1 to go to first gear with 100 mph the engine would also stall.

This seems like a very convoluted system. And where's the benefit? I don't see one.

For me, I see shifting gears and manually handling the vehicle more exciting so I can see that as a benefit. But that makes sense I suppose, other than added realism and more complexity handling the vehicle there's not many other benefits.

what's the point? turning GTAW into more of a racing game? it already is. and you can see/hear the change in gears when you're driving. why put in all the work to add manual when you should be RPing, not playing some car simulator.

I don't think adding gears and/or a clutch makes it more of a racing game but more of a realistic game. Also what do you mean with this sentence "why put in all the work to add manual when you should be RPing", I don't think anyone is RPing changing gears if that's what you're saying. Finally, I don't think having this can identify as a car simulator if you simply add a manual transmission system since you don't play to drive but to roleplay, this feature only adds to the realism.
