The topic follows Nathan Tavares' life as a Los Santos County Sheriff's Department detective sergeant. The topic title is suggestively inspired by one of Nathan's many struggles and character basis as the second in a family of three children. As the oldest child is special to the parents for being their first, and the third child is special for being the baby of the family, the middle child is never the favorite.

Middle children are often excellent communicators, have great interpersonal relationship skills, and are prominently empathetic. They are also sometimes called the peacemaker within the family, mediating between the entitled older sibling and pampered younger. This is obviously a stereotype.
