What does the Fire Department wear?

Everyday, the Los Santos Fire Department can be seen racing around in ambulances, fire trucks and other apparatus to get to emergency scenes, however, once they get there, they are all dressed differently. Ever stop to think, "Hey, why is this person dressed like this, but that person is dressed like that?", well, we are here today to answer that question!

Class B - Daily Work / Medical Response
Introducing what the department refers to as a Class B uniform. These class be uniforms consist of Navy Blue button down polo, commonly Short Sleeved for maneuverability, Navy Blue (or in the case of USAR, black) 4-pocket cargo pants, alongside a pair of black or white socks and black steel-toes shoes. This is also sometimes matched with a Departmental cap by those who take the option to wear it.

This combination of uniform is what is typically seen when a ambulance arrives on scene to a call. This keeps the Medical response looking professional and uniform with the rest of the crew, allowing us to be easily recognizable by Police and the community as a member of the Los Santos Fire Department.

Class C - Fire Incident / Turnout Gear
Next up in our lineup is our Turnout Gear, or what is referred to as Class C uniforms. This Class of uniform is the whole shah-bang. This class is made up of a coarse, fire-resistant coat that is created using numerous layers of thermal material, that isolates the heat of individual to the interior of the coat while keeping the heat of the flames away. Similarly, the pants, boots, as well as the gloves, are created using the same material and strategy, in order to create the same effective fire-resistance that is required in this line of work.

Helmets and SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) are a big deal in this class of uniform as well. The helmets, yellow for Non-Commissioned Staff, Orange for Captain and white helmets for Chiefs, allow us to distinguish who is in command on a scene, as well as, in the very rare case someone becomes trapped, allow us to identify who is missing by the rank and name imprinted on the helmet.

As for the SCBA, this apparatus allows our firefighters to breath clean, oxygenated air while inside a burning building, near a burning car or other hazardous air conditions, where oxygen or clean air may be scarce. It may seem like a small piece of equipment, but in the long run, it's a handy and required piece.

Class A - Ceremonial Dress

The lesser seen of the general Uniform Classes is the Class A uniform, and thankfully within good reason. The Class A uniform in brought out in the rare and unfortunately case of a funeral, or in special cases like weddings, civic meetings, high-level press conferences or other events at the order of a Chief.

This uniform consists similarly to Class B, however, unlike Class B, the Ceremonial Dress Uniform is required to be navy blue or white long sleeved shirts, a black, or dark navy blue tie to accompany a white undershirt, One Hundred (100) percent polyester navy blue slacks, a black leather belt paired with a gold or silver buckle, with black leather, low-cut footwear.

This class of uniform allows the department to look presentable and fancy when attending functions such as these.

Sneak Peek - Hazard Material Response

This above pictures uniform is unique to our Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) division, which is commonly seen as a HazMat, or Hazard Material, response uniform. This uniform will be covered in full detail in a later article based solely on the coverage of the USAR Division itself.
