Avery and Dionne Lafayette, founders of the renowned Los Santos County charity organization Grass Roots, were criminally charged today for misappropriating over $3.6 million in donations intended for their charity, which was founded twenty years ago.  The organization boasts to support "mentorship initiatives provide guidance and support, educational programs, offer academic resources and scholarships, arts and cultural enrichment and foster creativity and self-express." Most recently, it sponsored an inner city clean-up initiative. The Major Crimes Bureau of the Los Santos County Sheriff’s Department launched an investigation following Avery Lafayette’s voluntary confession to involvement in financial crimes and with the support of the District Attorney’s office. A rising community leader, it is unclear why Lafayette confessed to his crimes (although he argued for his wife's innocence).

In a statement, despite the confession, Grass Roots underscored that "it's essential to remember that an arrest is not an indication of guilt, and we believe in the principles of due process and the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise."

Avery and Dionne Lafayette were arraigned by ADA Michael Brovarsky and DDA Nicole Kerrigan at the Greg E. Joplin Courthouse.  They are facing a combined total of 41 charges, including felony embezzlement, misdemeanor fraud, and felony fraud. According to records, the charity organization was utilizing donations for personal financial assets, and purchases included a boat and a helicopter.

The victims of the fraud scheme included San Andreas government bigwigs, such as Democratic Leader Diana Jones, Chief Justice Morgan Jones, Senator Isabel Garcia, and Mayor Marcus Cambridge. Major San Andreas institutions were also defrauded, including the University of San Andreas, Los Santos, the State Fire Marshals, and Aurum Corporation.

During his confession, Lafayette admitted to "battling a gambling addiction."  Apart from the vehicle purchases, Lafayette used charity funding for cosmetic surgery, dental implants, a Pacific Bluffs Beach Resort membership for $50,000, $1,000,000 for personal household renovations, and $100,000 earmarked for an "urban women's empowerment" initiative ran by his wife.

During the arraignment hearing, the prosecution recommended a combined sentence of 20 months and total fines of $200,000, and a bail amount of four million dollars. The defense argued an eighth amendment case against the high bail amount, arguing that the amount was unprecedented and extensive. The next hearing is yet to be scheduled.

Further information regarding this case is expected to be released at a later date.
