𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡

Just like every year, this year in October, we spread awareness about breast cancer. Breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new cancer cases in women each year in the United States. In 2023, an estimated 297,790 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and 55,720 women will be diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States.

𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬

• New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit)
• Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
• Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
• Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast
• Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area
• Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood
• Any change in the size or the shape of the breast
• Pain in any area of the breast

It is not only women that can be diagnosed with breast cancer! An estimated 2,800 men in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2023.
Our hometown heroes within the Fire Department San Fire, and other emergency services are also at a higher risk for developing breast cancer!

This month is dedicated to increasing awareness and advocating for education on maintaining a healthy bladder, which is especially crucial for women. It's a chance to debunk myths, share information, and encourage women to prioritize their urinary wellbeing.

 

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬

 

• 𝐔𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐬):
Because women have a shorter urethra, allowing bacteria to travel to the bladder more quickly, they are more susceptible to UTIs than men.

 

• 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:
This condition is often linked to pregnancy and childbirth, and causes involuntary urine leakage during activities that stress the bladder, such as laughing, sneezing, or exercising.

 

• 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐫 (𝐎𝐀𝐁):
Women are more prone to OAB, which is characterized by frequent, urgent urination and sometimes even urinary incontinence.

 

• 𝐏𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐞:
This is a condition that commonly affects women after childbirth or during menopause.

𝐔𝐋𝐒𝐀'𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐚 𝐏𝐢 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡

 

We are at a loss for words, truly! Thanks to the University of Los San Andreas' sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, over $400,000 was raised to our clinic for #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth!

One half of the raised amount has been donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), and the other half went towards the Gynecologic Cancers Research Foundation (GCRF).

𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿

⚕️ Can be a hereditary disease (patients that are at risk for cancer)
⚕️ Even men can develop breast cancer tumors
⚕️ About 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men yearly.

𝗝𝗔𝗡𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛

The month of January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical Cancer is a cancer arising from the cervix. It is due to the abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗣𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗦

Early on, there are no symptoms experienced or seen, however, later symptoms may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or pain during sexual intercourse. While bleeding after sex may not be serious, it may also indicate the presence of cervical cancer. Symptoms of advanced cervical cancer may include: loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain, swollen legs, heavy vaginal bleeding, bone fractures, and even though rarely, leakage of urine from the vagina. Bleeding after douching or after a pelvic exam is a common symptom of cervical cancer.

 𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗦
The common causes are smoking, long-term using of oral contraceptives, or having multiple pregnancies which put you at a high-risk for serrvical cancer.

 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬

Treatment goes from chemotherapy to combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy, a radical trachelectomy which is the removal of the cervix and the upper part of the vagina.

There is a huge risk of infertility after this type of cancer and the rigorous treatment process, however, there is always a chance for In-Vitro Fertilization, or even adoption. It is best to consult with your OB/GYN, if you're looking to get pregnant.
