Los Santos (AP) -  Saturday, at the federal courthouse, the jury unanimously voted to convict all seven of the reputed Greek Mafia members. The American public got a look at an organization rarely seen by the world. A shady group of illicit businessmen who rack in thousands of dollars whilst also flying under the radar through illegal trafficking, gambling, and intimidation. This distinct group of elite Greek criminals are known as νονοί της νύχτας (translated as "Godfathers of the night") or simply put "The Greek Mob". Although the charges differ on each man, things such as a murder, loan-sharking, drug trafficking and gambling were listed amongst a slew of other charges.

Sixty-two year old Julius Masalis was pegged as the head of the criminal enterprise by both the FBI and key witness Kevin Sorrento who was a part of the San Andreas La Cosa Nostra family. For nearly thirty years, the Masalis syndicate was able to get away with just about everything under the sun, much of it without the FBI knowing a thing about them. If you ask most Greek-Americans, they will tell you that the Greek Mafia is a myth, an attempt to defame the positive image of the Greek people in America. However, Greek crime syndicates are rumored to be operating in Florida, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Santos, and San Fierro.

The Greeks stay under the radar by keeping a low profile. Prominent members could be counted on one hand and the rest are low level associates who do minor crimes for the mob. Rather than drive the organized crime in a city, the Greeks prefer to fuel by playing the second or third fiddle to larger criminal organizations such as the Italian mafia.

The Greek Mob has perfected the art of legitimizing themselves. Through legal businesses and through the careful deployment of “daisy chain” tax evasion schemes that stitch together sometimes dozens of shell companies. These tactics make it almost impossible to track the finances of the leaders without an inside man. The Greeks are almost a shadow and its members are experts at avoiding police detection. It's often said you won't know the Greek Mafia was there until they've left, since its design allows for the group to quickly dismantle and disappear whenever a threat appears. Members are incredibly elusive and will frequently change patterns or rackets in an effort to elude law enforcement. Infiltrating the organization has proved difficult, many informants do not know of the organization or know very little due to the organization's wariness of outsiders.

That story was the absolute truth for Julius Masalis, Mark Kostopoulos and the leaders of the West Coast Greek mob for almost three decades. They raked in millions of dollars under the nose of law enforcement and little leaked out about them. It wasn't until Kevin Sorrento, a made member in a Los Santos based La Cosa Nostra family, flipped on his own organization that the Greeks were brought to light.

Sorrento played an integral role in Greek-Italian relations, relaying messages back and forth along with organizing meetings. In January of 2014, he was arrested on a drug trafficking charge. Instead of doing the time he decided to flip. He was wired up and was able to record dozens of conversations with Julius Masalis himself along with other Greeks. This allowed the FBI to put the clamps down on the organization and finally arrest them in September.

The organization is believed to nearly be entirely behind bars now, several of the members left behind sons and nephews who may be involved in criminal activity. Historically, the idea of family has meant a great deal to Greek gangsters and their sons often got involved. However, the San Andreas FBI says that it is unlikely because "their sons are college graduates, living their own lives, they're not involved in organized crime".
