The Strawberry Avenue Church in South Los Santos has always been a second home to Pearlette and her family, who've attended since she was a little girl. If someone were to ask her about those days, she wouldn't hesitate to share how her mother used to hot-comb her hair before Sunday service! The church provided them (and many other black families) comfort and a sense of belonging during a turbulent time in America — the 1960s. The Civil Rights Movement was underway, and people from all walks of life sought to end the racial inequalities that plagued the country. Los Santos was deeply intertwined with the movement as its citizens protested for fair housing, equal education, the end of police brutality, et cetera.

On September 15, 1963 — four months after Pearlette's 10th birthday — a dynamite bomb exploded in a stairwell at 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, which claimed the lives of four young girls. Investigators later confirmed it was an orchestrated attack by the Ku Klux Klan against the African-American community. When news of the bombing spread nationally, Pearlette couldn't understand why and how this happened to girls her age; her faith in God slightly wavered. Her mother, aware of the attackers' intent, sat her down to talk about how not everyone was out to get them — that they needed to trust God's plans for a brighter future. While that did little to help, Pearlette eventually found strength through volunteer work after her church hosted a charity drive for those affected by the 16th Street bombing. To her, the fact God brought two different communities together was inspiring and renewed her trust in him, which continued into her teenage years when she partook in student activism.
