Drunk Driver Causes Accident in Paleto

Written & Photography by Holly Miller

In the evening of June 25th, Los Santos Insider reported to a scene which brings home a stark reminder of the dangers associated with drink driving. On the quiet, North-Eastern side of the scenic Paleto Bay area, Sheriffs responded to a call of a vehicle crash with a driver later shown to be under the influence of alcohol, who miraculously escaped serious injury after falling asleep at the wheel.

The incident took place on the quieter portion of the area and despite being on a highway, no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Nevertheless, the responding units were still left concerned about the potential consequences of such an incident.

The driver, who remains unidentified, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other injuries are reported. The Los Santos Sheriff's department's quick response ensured that the driver was given prompt assessment for injuries and the surrounding area clear of potential hazards to other passing drivers. After a short investigation, the driver was handed over to the Los Santos Fire Department, who transported them for further treatment and investigation. At the time of writing, the driver's condition was reportedly stable and not life-threatening.

Units on scene were soon joined by a unit dispatched for towing duties. Once the vehicle was identified and the scene reviewed, the tow operators were quick to get their truck into position and proceed with the removal of the damaged vehicle. The truck was towed to the Paleto Bay Impound lot, pending further investigation.

Driving under the influence of a control-impairing substance see's an alarming number of incidents year by year, resulting not only in property damage, written off vehicles but also serious injury and unfortunate death. Driving under the influence severely jeopardizes not only the life of the driver, but passengers and those on the road around them. As seen in this case, those not on the road may also be at risk, on sidewalks and in ground-floor buildings. Alcohol severely impairs the drivers judgement, response time, coordination and builds a false sense of confidence, which often ends in tragedy.

The incident in Paleto Bay highlights the continued need to educate drivers and bystanders further into the potential risks, with the aim to reduce the impact of the consequences of preventable incidents. Law enforcement agencies, notably the Los Santos Police department, work diligently to combat drink driving and raise awareness through a number of methods, including awareness campaigns but more frequently, their DUI checkpoints which many will be familiar with.

In this incident, the swift response from the Sheriff's department ensured that further risk was minimized, but it was also clear that their role does not stop there. The deputy showed a commitment to the further support of the driver involved in the incident, hoping to aid them in their recovery from alcohol addiction. By offering that assistance and making resources available, our local law enforcement agencies continue to play a pivotal role in reducing the number of incidents we see stemming from driving under the influence and addressing the underly causes of alcohol and substance dependency.

We implore our readers to stop, think and take a cab. Take responsibility for your actions and hold yourself accountable for alcohol consumption and driving. Designate a sober driver, hire a taxi or use the local public transport to get home safely.
