InGame Photography Animations, Tutorials, Tips and more!

Recommended Posts

I'm making this post because I have a passion for photography and have been pursuing it in-game for a while now. However, I've found that using Menyoo feels too complex for me. I'm sure there are others like me out there—people who want to capture fantastic pictures but aren't keen on installing Menyoo, custom clothing, or poses. This post is for those who share the same feeling!

This list mainly consists of mixed animations (not /customanim, as that CMD is only visible client-side; these are mixed animations visible to everyone). Mixing animations is quite straightforward. Most people have tried it at some point, like sitting and using a beer-holding or smoking animation. Essentially, if you can walk with an animation, you can mix it with any other static animation. Walking indicates that the animation is limited to the upper body, allowing the lower body to maintain the last chosen animation.

There's a wide variety of animations available, perfect for pictures or enhancing immersion, like holding a beer while seated or smoking inside a car. With numerous animations to mix and match, I hope this post saves you some time—and maybe even saves me some time too! ^.^

The list is still quite small, but I'll continue updating this list for both male and female characters!

Right now, I only have animations to share. However, I plan on posting more animations along with some guides and tricks that I've learned during this time.

Animations that involve holding an item are interchangeable. Example, if an animation involves using a phone, you can swap it with an animation that uses a camera or a cigarette.

In-Game or Menyoo?

Spoiler

As someone who's engaged in photography and videography IRL, I think I can help you figure out which one suits you better based on your preferences, and I'll most likely be right (there are always exceptions 🙂).

First of all... What are the differences? In short terms? The roleplay and limitations.

In-Game photography feels like being an actual photographer. You've got the weather, the time, the resources, and the locations you have in the game. Sometimes the people you take pictures of are experienced and know what to do, while others are nervous and unsure (Yes, I can feel your nervousness based on how often you apologize for not finding an animation that you like 😉, and believe me, I don't care at all – take all the time you need).

On the other side, Menyoo photography is all about freedom. You can take your time, and there's more variety since you can install custom maps, custom clothing, custom poses... I think you get it. Having the ability to manipulate the time, weather, and everything around you to take the perfect picture is something that feels great, even if you have to learn how to do it properly. Of course, you won't feel pressure. There's no time constraints, no model waiting for you to hurry – it's just you and your ideas.

So... which one do I choose? You've got three options:

A: If what I enjoy the most is interacting with people, and photography is a great way of connecting with the person I'm taking pictures of. My goal is to have great interactions, roleplay what I enjoy, and have a good time with people while experiencing photography that feels like reality, including pressure, time limits, searching for specific times and locations to take pictures, and ideas. Then choose In-Game Photography.

B: If I like to have freedom, take my time, want photography without pressure, and to feel peaceful – a space where I can do whatever I want and portray my ideas, experiment, and basically, take any picture I want the way I like it without the pressure of a time limit or another person being there. Then choose Menyoo Photography.

C If I like both. The experience of taking pictures is great, I like feeling like I'm a photographer, choosing locations, enjoying the roleplay and what it takes, but I'd rather have a lot of time and no pressure to take the pictures. Then, why not do both? Nobody's stopping you from roleplaying taking the pictures and then actually doing them in Menyoo. You'll get the best of both worlds!

How do I start with In-Game Photography?

Spoiler

It's a common mistake to think that you need people to start. Most of the time, people will think, "I wanna take pictures, but I know no people, so I need people to find me so they can hire me, but I don't have people to take pictures of, so they can see my work and hire me..." and the loop goes on.

Personally, I started months ago taking pictures at random car meets. Most of the time, when people see you with a camera in a public event such as car meets or charity events, they'll either assume that you are part of some news group or ask if you are taking pictures. If you do, most of them will ask where they can see them and follow you!

I've also taken pictures in places such as casinos, bars, clubs. You just get in with the camera, and at some point, someone related to the place is gonna ask, or you can approach them directly, tell them that you are taking pictures for free, and they'll be good with it most of the time. And if they like your work? You just won a customer.

You can also start taking pictures of yourself or random people. Believe me, a lot of people like taking pictures of their characters, so you'll make friends and customers as well!

Then, once you have a small portfolio, you can probably ask to join a group, faction, company... There's a lot, and if your work is good, they might even be trying to hire you already. When I started, I got some offers from different groups and had to choose. At first, it feels scary, but soon enough you'll realize how supportive people are with photography, videography, and content in general.

Personal advice? Try a little bit of everything, then decide what you actually want OOC'ly. The best part of being a photographer In-Game is the roleplay. You can be involved in News roleplay, this being dangerous situations, or more chill situations... you can be involved in interviews, just venue pictures, portrait, racing... Find your passion, you are here to enjoy it after all!

Equipment

It might seem like you don't need much, and it is true. The in-game editor gives you a lot of room to play with, but you can improve it even more.

Flashlight: Just carry it. It costs nothing, and 90% of the time, your picture will look way better by just lighting up the person or object that you want to photograph. For me, there is someone who roleplays as a photography assistant. He roleplays it by placing lights and helping while carrying the flashlight among other stuff, such as prepared outfits and already knowing poses. But if you have nobody, I recommend you equip the flashlight, then use: /anim idle48 and /anim tactical5.

This way, you'll be able to light people or objects by yourself and use the /editor. (Remember to roleplay that you place the lights and hold the camera for a more immersive experience).

Camera: You are a photographer; you gotta carry a camera. Even if you are not and you just want to take some pictures of yourself or some friends, carry it. The amount of zoom that it gives is more than enough reason to carry it. I usually take pictures of cars with the /camera, including being in one and taking pictures in movement (rolling shots, yes, you can use /camera in a vehicle and you will move with the vehicle, you cannot do that using /editor).

Other: This is not physically an item, but I really recommend having it—outfits! Having pre-made outfits helps a lot. Believe me, a lot. Going from wearing random clothes to wearing a specific outfit created for a specific environment can be the difference between a decent picture and your best picture.

Tutorials

I'll be posting some guides on how I do stuff here (I am not a professional, so if you know about photoshop / lightroom, you can probably make it look even better! Feel free to give advice as well, I will add them to the guides with credits if you do!

Take better pictures (In general ^.^")

Spoiler

If you want to improve your pictures, the first thing you gotta do is zoom in.
Why? Here's an example:

NyhEL0r.png rJmrCiA.png  K09cZ6B.png
These are a portrait photographed with a 20 mm focal length, a portrait photographed with a 235 mm focal length, and a 85mm focal lenght.
As you can see, the first picture has that fisheye effect, while the other ones looks way better, this also works using the /editor. Most cases, you wanna be as far away as you can from the subject, and then zoom in.

 What now? Aspect Ratio
You'll be using 16:9 and 9:16 most of the times, still, I'll leave this here in case you wanna know what do they mean.
tYrfj8K.png

16:9 and 9:16 works best for most people, and 9:16 works best for facebrowser, and social media in general (Phone aspect ratio ^.^)
How do you take these pics? Well, if you play in a 1920x1080 monitor, all you gotta do is take the screenshot, that's 16:9, but, what about 9:16?

Luckily all you gotta do is rotate the camera with the /editor so it looks sideways, take the screenshot, and then just right click it and select turn left or right, depending on what you need. (Please, if you do this, turn every picture to thee same side so later on, you can select all and turn left or right every single one at the same time.

Also, the closer the person or object is, the blurrier the background will become, which adds a lot when we are taking portrait pictures.

I recommend to not take just one picture, take as many as you can, in fact, you can use the editor, put the speed as low as you can, and turn it sideways as you take the pictures, so you have different angles (always take multiple pictures, you never know which one will work or not, and somehow, believe me, you'll manage to get the person blinking as you take the picture and fuck it up, I've done it too many times)

Mirror Selfie!

Spoiler

This one is fairly simple, choose the anim you want to use and take a picture like this, and another picture of the mirror! (or the object you wanna use as one)

RjqlfBN.pngpDFsMC2.png

Most mirrors do not reflect, or it doesn't look good at all, but it doesn't matter! Now we'll open our editing program, I use Photoshop.

Make a selection of the mirror, I used the Pen Tool, and remove it!
G1PiRsM.png     Yy66kwj.png

Now, place the selfie you took, remember that it must be under the mirror layer

ABIUflN.png

In this case, I will leave it like this, because I'm planning on resize it later. Now, It looks fairly good, but you can make it look better by unfocusing stuff!
I will unfocus the bag now, so you can see how it looks. You need to select it with the Pen Tool as well, but instead of removing the selection, you will CTRL+J it so photoshop will copy and paste the selection into a new layer (you need to select the mirror layer, otherwise you will copy the picture you just took)

UKghZok.png
This is how it looks without the mirror image. Now, we can select the full background picture, go to filters, and add gaussian blur

9WtNjDv.png
Here is the result, now, you can play with some other filters, you can also add a phone camera PNG to the phone (Because the InGame phone does not have a camera) and add whatever you want!
Resizing it will make it look like this:
qdkmM2H.png
(It is not full resolution, just a screenshot from photoshop)

From there, angles,  poses, mirrors... Everything's up to you!
Here's the result of one of my selfie pictures from today.

Instant Polaroid Pictures

Spoiler

First of all, you wanna open photoshop and create a new document, It should be a preset called A4 already there, but if not, just use the 2480 x 3508
Make sure that the background is transparent by either removing the background or hiding it.
Now, you wanna add a PNG Polaroid Frame, I'll leave this one so you can download it:
THNCP81.png
Feel free to use any frame such as Polaroid or Instax, colors....

Make the frame as big as you can, so it fits the A4 Size. Just like this:

nxgNy6O.png

Now, it's time to take the picture! feel free to take a pic of anything or anyone you want! I highly recommend you to use SHIFT + Print Screen. That key combination will put the screenshot in Images / Screenshots, and also your clipboardwhich means, you can now go to photoshop and CTRL + V to paste the image and forget about looking for it and dragging it

yTQ0ZqQ.png

Now, you'll need to use CTRL + T and move it so it fits the picture, remember that the screenshot must be under the Polaroid frame layer just like this:
BMFc7uf.png

Right now, It looks like this:
F1fW5AQ.png

The image is bigger than the frame, it doesn't matter! We'll just delete what's outside the frame.
After that, feel free to add some filters, such as black and white, Polaroid Filters, etc... Remember to apply them to the screenshot only.

mgEF39U.png

Now, we can export it, with transparent background and upload it to Imgur! Then, we'll create a note and attach the image to it.

If you wanna add something to the Polaroid Frame, such as your signature, I recommend using this web and saving one:
https://signaturely.com/online-signature/

You can get results like this:
People really appreciate when you give items like this 🙂

Assets

Since the GTA Vanilla phone has no camera, it is just a gray rectancle, I'll leave here some PNG and no background images, so you can just copy paste them into the phone. I'll also add more stuff later!

I love you and this guide so much! Tried some of the anims myself in game and I really love it. I really hope you update this guide regularly. Personally I just wish these anims framework and /editor existed back when I was interested in photography in GTA:W (2021-2022). I used /camera and I always hated how it works and it's limitation, also the annoying camera bug that forces you to relog out of the game (I legit had to relog in a middle of a wedding event as a photographer). But, I might probably explore this avenue again with another character soon.

Also another tip from me for fellow in-game photography enthusiasts. If you use reshade, it won't work through /camera. I learned some tricks for it, by temporarily binding whatever screen capturing app you use to left click (which is the button to take pictures in /cam), and take the screen captured image as your photo instead of the images generated by /cam, if you have to use /cam instead of /editor.

Also it's best if you don't use Steam's F12 capture. The image quality is just bad. I usually use Win+Shift+S as my primary screencap method, and I can "crop" whatever pic I took in an instant.
