Samuel Camastra, 46, was caught in an ambitious police attempt to penetrate organized crime at its highest level PHILADELPHIA — As Samuel Camastra was getting arrested last year on serious drug trafficking charges; he asked federal agents for a moment alone with his family before being taken away from them. He exchanged hugs and kisses with his wife and his 3-year-old daughter and high-fives with his 12-year-old son. The hearing that followed sooner after was about Camastra's family. It started, however, with family of a different sort. Camastra, 38, was caught in an ambitious police attempt to, as officials said at the time of his arrest, penetrate organized crime at a rather high level and features a co-operating turncoat mobster becoming an "Associate" of a Philadelphia branch of the American Mob. The probe gathered a treasure trove of revelations and allegations in recorded conversations, capturing professed secrets, gossip and internal affairs. The wiretaps, although untested in court, suggest a re-evaluation of some of what is publicly known about the current state of legendary mafia organizations in the U.S., and specifically in Philadelphia's Northen District.
