The Tongva Tribe

The Tongva tribe are an ancient and noble people with deep spiritual connections to the land that has become the state of San Andreas.
A one time migrating people from further north, with origins in the Uto-Aztecan peoples of Nevada, the Tongva have long held to their lands and islands north of the city of Los Santos where they enjoyed a peaceful hunter gatherer and fishing society with abundant resources to sustain their small populace, prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers and missionaries in the 1500s. 

 

With a language based in Uto Aztecan dialects, the peoples of this tribe claim almost a thousand members of whom most are direct descendants of the original peoples who survived the poxes and pestilences brought by European settlers. The majority of these people speak Spanish and English respectively, however there are still those who carry an oral tradition of the spoken Tongva language to carry on the stories of those who came before, and to preserve their fiercely proud heritage and cultural identity.

 

Today, the Tongva enjoy a modest reserve deep in the Tongva basin, which was recognised by the federal government in 2008, but despite modern freedoms and liberties to practice their old traditions and lore, their community lives in crippling poverty with prominent social issues including alcoholism and substance abuses.

 

The one time seat of the tribe, Two Hoots Falls, has long since fallen into disuse by the tribe on account of it's distance from the tribal reserve, however it is still a point of significant religious value to those who hold to the old ways of their ancestors. 

 

This thread will follow the character progression of members of the Tongva people.

((If you are potentially interested in making a character to represent a descendent of this tribe please PM me, it's open to anybody with consent of the OP and whilst it will not act as a faction in any sense of the word, it will be the gathering point for realistic tribal events and occasions. Whilst the Tongva people of California are a real tribe, we will take inspiration heavily from them but also head in our own direction, given this fictitious re imagining of the tribe is based upon lands presented in Grand Theft Auto's state of San Andreas.))
