RABBIT GANG

"Hop or Drop"

    •  A Rabbit is Born (1979-1980s)

The Playboy Gangsters (PBG), also known as Rabbit Gang or Rabb Gang, arose in 1979 in an alley of the Vespucci Canals in West Los Santos, San Andreas. A small square neighborhood which locals call "La Cienega", or in English form, "The Swamp," because of the water ways that run through it. The gang was initially formed as a merger of rival break-dancing groups. The dance of choice at the time being pop-locking. A combination of two dance styles, popping and locking, to create one unique dance. It was nothing but smiles and good ole times, but however, things would quickly take a violent turn.

As crack cocaine hit the drug market in the 1980s, the gang used Prosperity — nicknamed ‘P Street’ — to sell the drug, often to clients from the affluent, predominantly white adjacent areas. The distribution system involved pagers, hand signals, and lookouts posted on bicycles and perched on rooftops. When the cops showed up, the crews would disappear into the alleys to evade arrest. “Nobody could go outside, literally,” said Robert Ferber, a deputy city attorney at the time.

"As it is, this area is getting more police protection than any other place in West Los Santos, yet crime is still rampant," said 14 year officer Frank Domino, in a court affidavit filed on behalf of Hahn's lawsuit. While some gang members, who typically range in age from 14 to 28, reside in single-parent households or on their own in a handful of rundown apartment buildings in the neighborhood, others come from surrounding communities.

At night, they take control of the streets, congregating in narrow roadways and alleys to hang out and ply their lucrative rock cocaine trade. Thus far this year, more than 500 arrests have been made in Prosperity-Invention, the majority of them for drug-related offenses. Though, authorities say the Playboy Gangsters have been involved in six killings this year and 14 disappearances since mid-1985.

    •  First Extensive Gang Injunction in History (1987)

A gang injunction is "a court order that prohibits gang members and associates from engaging in specified behaviors within specifically designated geographical boundaries” (Caldwell, 2010). The first three gang injunctions ever was imposed in 1982, but they only focused on gang graffiti.

In 1987, the city attorney and the LSPD obtained a more extensive gang injunction against the Playboy Gangster Crips. The suit was the first to attempt to prohibit gang members from wearing gang clothing and associating with one another. The boundaries of the injunction were broadly defined as anywhere within the City of Los Santos. The American Civil Liberties Union challenged the injunction, which led a judge to reduce its scope to a few blocks and strike certain controversial prohibitions.

Only a few years ago, the Prosperity-Invention neighborhood was no different than other pleasant working-class enclaves within a stone's throw south of Rockford Hills. But now, residents are more likely to describe the neighborhood 6-block district as a graffiti-strewn prison where they are held hostage by the Playboy Gangster Crips. To avoid mugging, burglaries and intermittent gunfire, some residents have stopped walking their dogs or watering their lawns after nightfall. Security bars have been bolted over picture windows, marring the view from neatly appointed Spanish-style homes, and chain-link fences — sometimes topped with razor wire as an added deterrent — have been put up.

"I feel like I'm jailing my tenants to protect them from the kids outside," said one apartment owner, who recently doubled the height of a fence to 12 feet. Despite such precautions and a year-long police crackdown that resulted in a 50% increase in arrests during the first six months of 1987, members of the 200 strong Playboy Gangsters say the Westside neighborhood they have dubbed "PBGC Land" remains a comfortable place to hang out and conduct business.

    •  Two Hoods into One (Late 1980s-Early 2000s)

If you look at La Cienega today, you may not be able to tell that there was once another thriving gang occupying it's grounds. This gang hung out on the eastern side of La Cienega and went by the name Bedrocc Gangster Crip. They were named after Rockford Drive. The gang was originally just a clique of guys that ran together under the name Rockford Boys. At some point, they began to grow in numbers and was seen as a possible threat in the eyes of the close-by Playboy Gangster Crip gang. Not much later, fights ensued.

For a while, Playboy and Bedrocc would have these back and forth attacks. Nothing more than a couple melees. It was quite difficult for either side to completely go against the other, being that a lot of them grew up together and even hung out on many occasions. But at some point for whatever reason, a gun did come out. Thankfully, no one faced injuries and things ended on a good note. Long story short.

Bedrocc eventually caved in and joined up with their friends from the other side. While this is true, some members of Bedrocc wasn't having it and stopped banging entirely. Today, you can see evidence of Bedrocc's existence in the tattoos of former claimers who are now Playboy Gangsters.

    •  Generational Enemies (Present Day)

Today marks a new era for the Playboy Gangsters. They're slowly getting back to their old ways, having strength in numbers. With money coming in from all directions and members getting both feet into the rap industry, many youngsters in the area choose to be from PBG. This is the Tiny Loc generation, commonly referred to as Tiny Loc Crip. If you were to describe this group of members, you'll have to say active and aggressive. Plain and simple. They carry on the traditional face tatts popular to the gang, patrol the hood very often, quick to handout DPs and put offs, etc. And by the looks of it, there's no tolerance for enemies.

Immediate enemies of PBG are no different than twenty or thirty years ago. Vespucci Shoreline Crip and School Yard Crip are by far, the two hoods Playboys have the most hate for. Only a year ago, a Shoreline Crip was killing on Palomino Avenue near a clothing store in Vespucci. Soon after, PBG members took to social media to disrespect the fallen enemy. This type of behavior isn't at all new to the La Cienega neighborhood. LSPD and non-affiliated residents of the area are still searching for ways to combat the spiraling growth of the gang and the violence they bring with them.

A 2015 crackdown resulted in arrests of many Hispanic males and only a few documented gang members from Playboy Gangster Crip. It's believed that their involvement runs deep but they know how to draw the attention elsewhere. In many cases, you'll see affiliates bonding with like-minded criminals who are non-affiliated. Either it's a purposeful game plan or it's incidental. To this very day, a solution has yet to be found and who knows if one ever will.
