The Avenues 13

  • nvjSpPB.jpgThe Avenues, also known as Los Avenidas or simply as AVE’s, is one of the eldest Mexican-American street gangs that operate in South Central Los Santos. Founded in the late 1950’s, The Avenues have been a dominating criminal element of the neighborhoods in Strawberry, Los Santos and played a major role in both the crack epidemic of the late 1980’s, early 1990’s and the opioid epidemic which has been ravaging the United States since the early 2000’s.

As a result of the role they played in both the manufacturing and distribution of crack cocaine and the violence which stemmed from said actions, the Los Santos Police Department had placed the area of which The Avenues called home under a gang injunction. A gang injunction is a type of restraining order issued by the U.S. courts which prohibits known gang members from partaking in certain activities. Several key players of the gang have cited to local news networks that this is just an act of racial profiling and that the LSPD has been harassing elderly citizens, children and simple blue collar workers as a result of the injunction.

With the pressure from both the Mexican and Mexican-American citizens of Strawberry to both lift and cease the pressure from Law enforcement, several civil rights lawyers have been contacted and are actively engaging the courts in hopes that they will lift the injunction.

The Avenues hold allegiance to the Surenos, which is also known as the Sureno Alliance, because of this the Avenues have adopted the number 13 into their name as do most Sureno associated gangs. The number 13 is in reference to the 13th letter of the alphabet, which is M or eme in Spanish. Much like the many Sureno gangs who use the number 13, they too are supposedly connected to the Mexican Mafia, which is a dominating force both in prison and out.

During the start of the opioid epidemic which now strangles the nation, a young son to two Mexican nationals who immigrated to San Andreas was making his way up the proverbial corporate ladder of the now well established Avenues. Gavino Martinez began showing his street savviness at the early age of 15. Starting as a simple runner for the big homies on the block, Martinez eventually established himself as a capable drug dealer and debt collector. Gavino’s parents would eventually be involved in a car accident which would take their lives and leave both Gavino and his elder sister, Gloria, to fend for themselves.

With the loss of his parents and the added weight of needing to bring in money to sustain and provide for both him and his sister, Gavino knew he would have to increase his drug operation, this in turn would require more man power. Although he was only 18 years of age Gavino would be considered by most to be a veteran in the gang life. Alongside him would stand a man nearly just as equal in stature, Santiago Suarez. He too was familiar and involved with the drug business of Strawberry. While both men were considered successful drug dealers, the people below them were not so capable. Several individuals under the employment of both Gavino and Santiago were arrested and turned into informants by the Drug Enforcement Administration, resulting in both men ending up in San Andreas’ local "con college," Bolingbroke Penitentiary. They were arrested and charged with drug trafficking and distribution and at their trials they were both convicted, each receiving 15 years with the possibility of parole after 10 years.

Santiago Suarez’s journey to Bolingbroke Penitentiary originally started with his father, who was a Mexican national born to the gritty streets of Guadalajara. Rumored to have ties to a low level cartel affiliate, Santiago’s father bought and sold drugs by the kilo. Eventually, like most criminals, law enforcement caught up with with him which caused him to go into hiding. During his time on the run he would end up meeting the love of his life, Santiago’s mother. Only months after meeting, Santiago’s mother would become pregnant. Both his father and mother headed north towards the border of the United States of America and they would both illegally enter the United States where his mother would give birth to Santiago Suarez.

By the time his parents illegally entered the United States, The Avenues were already an established gang and flourishing on the streets of South Central, Los Santos. The allure of the life his father once led was too strong and eventually Santiago’s father gave in, going back to the life that had caused him to flee the city of his birth. Although he was young and with a new child, his father cliqued up with the Avenues and found that the life of a chicano gangbanger suited him.

As Santiago grew up and became a teenager, the influence of his father was very strong. Unlike other teenagers his age, he still had his father there with him but his father was caught up deep in the gangster lifestyle. Instead of mentoring him in the ways of schooling and life and influencing him to go on the straight and narrow like the majority of parents, his father was just too involved with the gang and as a result Santiago would take notice of this and inevitably follow in his footsteps.
