The Masi Crew

“Everything is on hiatus.”
– Gregory Manno, Los Santos soldier, describing the family’s current position to a mob associate in the late 2000s.

The common dominator between LS and the LCN world is Dominic "Donnie Shacks” Montemarano. The Colombo crime family captain was the driving force behind the growth of the mob on the west coast. The tentacles of the Italian mafia spread throughout the state of San Andreas, specifically in areas where conventional mob rackets were accessible and ripe for the taking. His influence spread from Los Santos to Nevada and Arizona and this wide-ranging protectorate in multiple states is what made him a key player in what was later identified as the 'Southern San Andreas crime family' or colloquially the LS mafia.

What most reporters have failed to mention is that the aforementioned 'crime family' has no direct association to one east coast family in specific, instead it's a melting pot of relatively-known wiseguys who, together, created an assortment of mob presence in the city. A mixed bag of mafia soldiers from different families, specifically the Colombo, Buffalo, and Philadelphia crime families. Jimmy Caci, a member of the Buffalo crime family, was one of those associated to Montemarano's group despite both figures being from opposing outfits. This should be an indicator of the mishmash nature of the makeshift family on the west coast during the 90s.

Montemarano's involvement on the west coast soon hit the floor after John 'Sonny' Franzese was sidelined by an indictment making him acting-underboss of the Colombo crime family. Carmine Profeta, a Colombo soldier under Montemarano, had taken over the LS crew alongside Gregory Manno. These two were joined by Roy Masi, an associate who had been active in Southern San Andreas since the early 90s and was later inducted in LS in the early 2000s. Between them began consolidating power within the state with the backing of the New York family. Many speculate that Manno's fallout with Profeta came long before Profeta's murder in 2017.

Profeta was killed in 2017 in what was labelled a botched robbery but it was later speculated to be a powerplay made on behalf of Manno who had believed he should have been the New York mob's emissary from the start. Profeta's murder created uproar within both the crew and the family and although never proven, the street knew who was behind the hit all along. Without evidence, the Colombos kept their involvement on the west coast through Manno even if they had their reservations about how Profeta died.

Roy Masi became a key player and a catalyst for Manno. His activity and influence on the street is what made Profeta, Manno and Lugera grassroot figures in the LS mob scene. They were heavily involved in narcotics, car theft and later pornography. The rejuvenation of the crew was short-lived given its downfall a few years later. Masi and 12 other reputed members were arrested in a sting labelled 'Operation High Stakes' which took down members of the Italian and Mexican mafias for their joint involvement running illegal gambling rackets.

Those who didn't leave the crew or go to prison joined the ranks of the Philadelphian satellite crew, much to the dismay of those who were imprisoned or active. Soldiers switching allegiances from one family to another was considered forbidden in the cosa nostra world and against the rules if you were considered amico nostro, otherwise known as a made man. This wasn't the case with mob associates or those not recognized as such.

Carmine Profeta, Gregory Manno, Steven Lugera and Roy Masi were Montemarano's first and oldest soldiers to successfully fly the Colombo flag and form a satellite crew that eventually broke off from the family late in the 2000s after a wave of indictments crippled the New York family. With indictments coming down hard on their own crew, Manno left town and has since been labelled MIA. Although many sightings have been reported by mob news entities since.

K7S9jMz.gifThe most recent induction of Manno holdovers was Stephen Mirra, a Canadian associate with strong links to the Montreal-based Rizzuto crime family. His induction was said to have been in 2017 at the request of the Gambino crime family who wanted Mirra to serve as a representative between the New York families and Canadian crime families, much to the dismay of the Buffalo crime family who had been liaising between the two outfits for a decade.

Mirra was murdered in 2019 in a park in Montreal while walking his dogs. Many speculate that the mob hit was related to the ongoing feuds between rival clans in the area but sources indicate that the hit was carried out on behalf of the Buffalo crime family on the orders of Joe Todaro Jr who had been vocal about his dissatisfaction of effectively being cut out as a middleman.

In 2022 Gregory Manno was spotted entering Sharky's bar in Downtown Vinewood ending any speculation of his murder after a lengthy disappearance. His reappearance has created rumours that his sole involvement is to mentor and educate the new school on the old ways of operating, but many of the modern-day wannabes and cardboard Mafiosi have no interest in maintaining the once-sacred culture and traditions of the la cosa nostra.

Richard Mirra, brother to the slain Stephen Mirra, has allegedly taken on his brother's role as the representative between New York and Canada. Although he is listed as a suspected member, there has never been confirmation of his induction. The Canadian has since kept the company of other suspected members and associates including George Alfonsi, son to Manno crew soldier Richard and Frank Gatti, son to George Gatti.

Although from a lineage of New York heavyweights, many of the modern associates of the Masi Crew were born and bred in LS.

It has been described as "an organization of halfwits."

OOC information:

Our aim is to replicate the existence (or illusory existence) of the remnants of what was once considered the LA mob. The cultural difference between coasts specifically (east vs west) is a culture we're trying to appropriate through the modern way of life, steering well clear of its golden years depiction. This means if you are looking for all things associated, or stereotyped by past iterations, i.e. the 3 piece suits, the phonetic spelling and TV-show references, this faction is not for you and we'd suggest trying your hand elsewhere.

However, if you are willing to enlighten yourself and take instruction as to the direction the faction is heading in, we'll gladly welcome you on board. You will never see this faction with its own enclave or territorial branding i.e. a 'Little Italy' nor will we war other factions for territory, our goal here is to fly under the radar and earn money where we can, without stepping on the toes of the influential west coast criminal organizations.

Our development into anything more than that will come organically from the ground up, and our stance by starting this project with 0 made men should emphasize that. We believe the status has been weakened in recent times, so attaining it here (if at all) will be no picnic.

The 2003 Annual Report to the California Legislature on Organized Crime mentions 'traditional organized crime' (LCN) as a "dwindling and diminishing presence". It estimated the Southern California family had 15-20 members, and there was some activity from the east coast families too. The last version of this report in 2010 does not even mention LCN at all as an organized crime threat in California.

This alone should show the abandonment of tradition in replace of modern wannabes and remnants of what once was.

An important note for organized crime characters. The people involved in these organizations usually are already criminals before they become affiliated. For example, you don't go from being a civilian and one day join up with a crew and suddenly become a bookmaker. You're already a bookmaker by trade, and you happen to begin an affiliation. The same can be said for any illegal 'trade'. A person will gravitate into a life of crime for any number of reasons before they find themselves connected to an organized enterprise, not after.

The old rp way was to start out tending bar at a mobbed up business and get offered 'some work' or some shit. This kind of thing can happen but it should be rare. Generally, your character should either start out in whatever illegal business you've chosen to rp, or you should rp getting into that, before you start trying to get him affiliated. The only real exceptions to this are those who grow up in mobbed up families and are basically preordained to become criminals, those guys do get 'put on' before they start earning any illegal money usually.

By becoming involved with this faction on a connected level you automatically relinquish your character kill permissions when you post screenshots on our thread or are invited to our faction centre in-game. This should be common knowledge to anyone wanting to become involved with a faction like this, so you don't throw caution to the wind without fear of consequence.

This thread is a continuation of the following faction:
