Degu
Large Underground Fire In Pillbox Metro - Cause Uncertain -- by Gabriel Stone - 31st January 2023 Top: The scene on arrival. Bottom: The first victim already outside the tunnel on arrival, being questioned. On January 29th, some time around 8:30PM, LSFD received a call reporting large amounts of smoke coming from the Pillbox underground metro and out onto Atla Street. One transit construction worker, a victim, was already outside on the side of the road when units arrived. Smoke billowed out of the tunnel onto the street in large volumes and the victim at the roadside repeatedly asked where his friends were. After being questioned, the unnamed victim stated that there had been two others including himself in the tunnel, though at first there was some confusion as to whether there were three or four victims. Top: Victim two being carried to safety. Bottom: Victim three being carried to safety. The second and third victims were retrieved quickly after the arrival of emergency services, however a fourth victim remained further into the tunnel. All available firefighters were redirected from their present tasks into assisting in the tunnel. Medical back up was requested from Lifeguards and EMS to come join the many present ambulances on scene. San Fire and LSSD worked together to close Aurum corporation arrived on scene to close down the power lines supplying the underground metro and the fight continued to get the fire under control. The first victim continued to be questioned on the side of the road and in his accounts of what happened he claims to have no idea what happened. He stated that he and his colleagues had been working on the walls inside the tunnel when there had been an explosion, suggesting that a spark had ignited some built up gas. Above: The final retrieval of victims from the tunnel, including victims from Engine 7. Roughly around 9:40PM a fourth victim from the transit construction team, allegedly hired by the metro, was brought out on a work truck found in the tunnel itself. On the back of the truck were two firefighters from Engine 7, both suffering injuries as a result of their rescue mission. This brought the victim count to six. All victims were taken to a triage point across the road and treated for their injuries. As of yet no one is reported to have died as a result of the incident. During this time, numerous other crimes happened on the same street, making it difficult for LSFD and SanFire to work as freely as they'd like. At one point, a white taxi seeking to escape a police chase broke through the barriers in place and drove along the street to get away. Following that, a yellow taxi was involved in a hit and run when it ran over a deputy on the street, thankfully only leaving him with minor injuries. Shortly following the hit and run, gunshots erupted at the far end of the street. It was no easy environment for anyone to work in. The scene concluded when the fire was beaten and victims were taken for further care in hospital. The street cleared and LSFD determined that they would release a statement the following day. However the following day they have stated that the statement may take several days due to the "complexity of the situation" It has not yet been passed onto us whether or not the circumstances surrounding the explosion and subsequent fire were suspicious. I was asked whether I'd seen anything or anyone acting suspicious, so it is possible foul play is suspected but not necessarily so. Was this arson, malpractice or an unfortunate incident? A follow up article will be posted following the public statement from LSFD. 9 Link to comment
