This month is dedicated to advancing advocacy, protection, and promotion of breastfeeding to ensure that all families have the opportunity to breastfeed. In the month of August, we also recognize weeks such as; World Breastfeeding Week, Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Breastfeeding Week, and, Black Breastfeeding Week.

𝐀, Breastfeeding's good for both baby and mother

Most doctors and health organizations worldwide suggest breast milk is the best possible food for an infant for the first six months. Not only does breast milk contain the correct balance of nutrients, but it also boosts a baby's immune and digestive systems with antibodies and good bacteria. For mothers, breastfeeding fosters an emotional bond with their new baby, and reduces the risk of certain cancers.

𝐁, A lifetime of good health

Tests reveal a correlation between higher intelligence and lower risk of chronic disease in breastfed babies. This is most likely due to antibodies not found in infant formula. Further, there's a much higher risk of infection with improperly sanitized formula.

𝐂, Breastfeeding's convenient and inexpensive

If a mother maintains a healthy diet, the baby will benefit. Still, breastfeeding's not easy; it takes about as many hours to feed a child for a year as it does to work 40 hours a week at a full-time job. Mothers can feed their babies almost anywhere, especially now that many more public places like airports and offices accommodate breastfeeding. It's also significantly less expensive than purchasing a year's worth of infant formula.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. While every type of diabetes is important and needs awareness spread, here at Cattaneo Obstetrics & Gynecology, we would rather focus on the maternal-fetal health side of diabetes and Gestational Diabetes.

𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲

Diabetes can cause problems during pregnancy for women and their developing babies. Poor control of diabetes during pregnancy increases the chances of birth defects and other problems for the baby.

𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝟏

The pancreas makes no insulin or so little insulin that the body can’t use blood sugar for energy. Type 1 diabetes must be controlled with daily insulin.

𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝟐

The body either makes too little insulin or can’t use the insulin it makes to use blood sugar for energy. Sometimes type 2 diabetes can be controlled by eating a proper diet and exercising regularly. Many people with type 2 diabetes have to take diabetes pills, insulin, or both.

𝐆𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬

This is a type of diabetes that is first seen in a pregnant woman who did not have diabetes before she was pregnant. Often gestational diabetes can be controlled by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly. For most women with gestational diabetes, diabetes goes away soon after delivery. When it does not go away, the diabetes is called type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs when your body can’t make enough insulin during your pregnancy. Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into the cells in your body for use as energy.

Cervical health is one aspect of health that many people and women neglect throughout their lives. By becoming more knowledgeable about this, people and women can detect any health issues at an early stage and get access to the best treatment.

When diagnosed, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫

Cervical cancer is a disease in which cancer cells arise in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. HPV is almost always the cause of cervical cancer, which is why vaccines against the virus are an important part of cervical cancer prevention strategies.

Although our practice specializes in the entire spectrum of Women's Health, as medical providers worldwide, we also celebrate heart health.

During the month of February, everyone including physicians, nurses, other healthcare workers, and everyday people focuses on their cardiovascular health.

• Exercise daily for at least 2 hours! Whether it is jogging, hiking, cycling, or simply taking a long walk. Your heart is a muscle and, as with any muscle, exercise is what strengthens it.

• Quit smoking! While quitting smoking and breaking this unhealthy habit is tough, and requires a long process and sometimes psychological help, the biggest motivation for people should be that smoking is the leading cause of heart disease.

• Implement a healthy diet! Salmon and guacamole are loaded with healthy fats that are good for the heart, but a big and yummy bowl of fruits and vegetables is no exception!

• Fight the stress! There are more than 1,400 biochemical responses to stress, including a rise in blood pressure and a faster heart rate. If you don't manage your stress, it can create more stress and trap you in a stress cycle. Although this is very hard to overcome, try to find help via psychological services.

March is the month of Endometriosis Awareness Month. The symbol of this event is a yellow ribbon. Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition where endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis can start at a person’s first menstrual period and last until menopause.

While the cause of Endometriosis is unknown, and there is no cure, the can be handled with medicines and/or surgical intervention. The best way to "prevent" this disease is early diagnoses.

Pelvic Pains;
• During a period
• During or after sex
• Pain when urinating or defecating

Some patients may also experience;
• Chronic pelvic pain
• Heavy bleeding during periods or between periods
• Trouble getting pregnant
• Bloating or nausea
• Fatigue
• Depression or anxiety.

These symptoms can improve after menopause, but don't have to. The symptoms are variable and broad, which is why if you experience more than one of these symptoms, you should consider booking an appointment with your Obstetrician-Gynecologist.

A lot of people are confused or don't know the difference between Pregnancy Tests and Ovulation Tests.

Measure Human Chorionic Gonadotropin also known as hCG, which is only produced when you're pregnant. If an hCG test shows a positive, that is a pregnancy confirmation.

When it comes to ultrasounds, most people only know about an abdominal ultrasound, but forget that there is also a transvaginal ultrasound. So what is the difference between the two?

𝐀𝐛𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝
Abdominal ultrasound (also called abdominal ultrasonography) is a form of medical ultrasonography to visualise abdominal anatomical structures. It uses transmission and reflection of ultrasound waves to visualise internal organs through the abdominal wall.

Definition of abdominal ultrasound - NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms - NCI

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐯𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝
Is a procedure used to examine the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and bladder. An instrument is inserted into the vagina that causes sound waves to bounce off organs inside the pelvis. These sound waves create echoes that are sent to a computer, which creates a picture called a sonogram.

Dear patients,

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. Cattaneo Obstetrics & Gynecology is proud to announce that our practice now has its own van, fully equipped with a Portable Ultrasound, EKG, and other essential medical instruments and equipment, along with a medical bag stocked with all the necessary supplies.

This new addition to our practice will allow us to provide house call services to those who are unable to travel due to being on bed rest, or for patients who are located in the county and require our medical assistance. While we are not an emergency or ambulance service, we are happy to offer this convenient option to our patients who may need medical care in the comfort of their own homes.

It's important to note that in case of a medical emergency, we strongly advise patients to call 9-1-1 for immediate assistance. However, for our patients who are in active labor and require transportation to our clinic, our van can be requested for transfer.

We are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to our patients, and this new addition to our practice will allow us to further extend our services to those in need. We are committed to continuing to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to all our patients, whether it's at our clinic or through our house-call services.

National Infertility Awareness Week (#NIAW) is from April 23 through April 29. The movement brings together millions of Americans who want to remove the stigmas and barriers that stand in the way of building families.

It is a sadder week for those, who are not able to carry out a pregnancy at all, due to some kind of underlying disorder or diagnoses. This week is aimed to spread awareness and break a stigma around infertility, the possible causes for infertility, multiple options to starting a family, and so on.

Also remember, that having trouble conceiving does not always have to be the woman's fault. Assumptions such as often target women more than men, but in reality, men can be infertile as well.
