Self Insert into RP - Screening Question

Recommended Posts

People who play self insert are... Ehh. It's not inherently bad, the problem is it's a lot harder to take an L when you see you char as an extension of yourself. It goes both ways though, a LOT of people project char traits on to the player. If your char is this then you must also be this.

This is a lot more damaging imo. The different opinions people have of me as a person based on what char they know me for is really funny but it's also a problem.

People need to learn to stop mixing in general. Self inserts are just a symptom of a much bigger issue. Unfortunately for me, my mantra is, "I am not my character " but I have to repeat it to other people.

This. It's not particularly the self inserts that create the whole problem. It's just a part of it. The management team need to press this issue to anyone and newcomer.

Characters are characters. Players are players. They are two different entities. I don't feel hurt in real life when my characters got stabbed. The guns that my characters own are just game items. My characters might do dumb stuff and it doesn't mean I do the same in real life.

I can create a whole character that resemble me 100% in real life, but I can still see the difference between me and my character as I'm a human being while my characters are just pixels.

Self inserts sometime can't be avoided as characters knowledge is basically the players knowledge. Such as, I can't RP a character that able to teach math if I can't count 1+1 in real life, but I can RP as an aviator teacher if I am a pilot in real life. Of course, that's just an example. I know 1+1 equals 3.

Well I know nothing about tattoos irl and yet I roleplay an expert on tattooing, then I know nothing about cars irl and yet I did rp a mechanic and motorcycle specialist. People are not limited by knowledge, it's called character research. If you want to roleplay someone with market analysis knowledge, you read up something about it, so you know basic terms etc etc. This is actually required for DMEC, FD, Car service garages etc etc. Just like I had to read up on tattooing gear, techniques, injuries, antibacterial preparations and other stuff, just to roleplay a tattoo artist.

The problem does exist but I don't believe this is the solution, simply because the RP screening questions don't do much - it's very easy for them to be copy-pasted or have other people do them, and the proof is the amount of people who, after learning all of the rules and how to apply them, still end up breaking them and getting banned. I don't think this would fix as much as we hope it would.
