Ethics Policy

The San Andreas News Group is dedicated towards upholding the highest ethical standards in our journalistic practices across all of our papers.

We strive to ensure that every piece of content we deliver is fair and accurate through a rigorous review process prior to publishing.

The paper also intends to ensure that we retain our integrity above all else. Without integrity, without courage that a paper only lives to serve itself and the people of their city or country, then a paper cannot survive.

Due to the sensitive nature of some topics that we have to report on, we also need to be certain that every single person that contributes to a piece - whether through video footage, a statement, or otherwise - must give their full consent to be included. We must honour anything that is said 'off-the-record', and accommodate those who wish to comment 'in the background' (Role, without a name) by discussing in depth the amount of attribution they're willing to give.

The purpose of this report is to guide SANG staffers on how to act within questionable ethical situations or if they are uncertain on how to proceed following a question of ethics.

Fairness, Accuracy and Corrections:

Whenever possible, the San Andreas News Group must seek out opposing view points to the subject at hand, especially when delving into the realm of hot-button issues and politics.

The opposing view must come from an equally valid source i.e. a view from one Republican Senator must be matched with someone who's officially affiliated with democratic leadership or another senator. A viewpoint from one parent approving the changes within a school board should follow the viewpoint of another disapproving if possible.

Whenever an opposing view cannot be reached, we must state who we tried to contact, when, and the method we tried to reach them.

Reporters and journalists that have a connection to a story, such as having previously worked for a company or is actively friends with one of the executives that is to be subject of an article, must received permission from the Chief Editor prior to being involved in a piece relating to it.

Employees that are related to a subject or a source, whether romantically or by blood, shan't write an article on them or using them as a source.

Developing stories must indicate as such via a phrase similar to 'more to come' or 'the article shall be updated as the situation develops'.

In the rare case that an error has been spotted, we encourage whoever has to report it so papers of SANG and it's employees may swiftly correct the mistake. Mistakes made shall receive a full editor's note within their respective article, where they shall say what the mistake was previously, where in the article it was, and what was changed to correct it.

CONFIDENTIALITY

A piece is as only good as it's sources, and if the sources cannot be identified by the public then the piece retains little value. However, when covering life-threatening situations or if a source delivers a statement that may endanger their life or their status, then we shall accommodate them to the best of our abilities.

Agreements as to the exact accreditation of a source should always be ironed out prior to an interview. We need to make sure that our sources trust us, and we need to ensure that this trust is not misplaced.

Journalists of SANG should try to encourage sources to go fully on-the-record, but must respect whatever amount of accreditation they decide on.

Anything that is said off-the-record should stay off-the-record. It shall not be publicized. Journalists are permitted to use off-the-record statements for their research, to chase up on future sources, but they should never write them in drafts for review.

The journalist, when conducting an interview, should make it known whenever someone is considered on the record. Likewise, whenever a source wishes to contribute a statement off the record in the middle of an interview, they must make this intent clear; the journalist conducting the interview must respect everything that is off the record.

Ideally, every piece will contain one named source within the article. A piece solely consisting of an unnamed source, or a source of someone in the background, with nothing to substantiate their claims - whether it be photographic/video evidence or a supporting named source - shall rarely be published.

Any article solely relying on unnamed and anonymous sources shall require approval from the chief editor.

Sources that are generally allowed to remain unnamed include, but not limited to, Law Enforcement Officers actively commenting on their work (both matters in the department and matters to do with crime groups), organized crime group affiliates commenting on their respective syndicate and executives of major companies commenting on unethical practices.

The identities of fully anonymous sources shall remain between the source, their respective journalist and their chief editor. No other member of SANG should know.

Under any and all circumstances, sources shall not be paid. They shall not be given any monetary incentive to become sources.

NAMES/DESCRIPTIONS

Whenever Law Enforcement identifies a person of importance - known gang leaders, known politicians, known executives, etc. - who has been arrested, they shall be able to be identified by SANG. Otherwise, they shall only be named once charged.

Juveniles, unless tried as adults or their crime is identified as suitably heinous and important for the news, shall not be identified. A reporter should consult an editor to determine if a crime is 'heinous' or 'important' enough.

SANG, generally, does not name victims of sexual assaults.

Descriptors shall only be used if the description is especially noteworthy. i.e. a facial tattoo or a scar.

QUOTATIONS, ATTRIBUTION:

Quotes must always be given their respective attribution. SANG does not condone plagiarism.

If a reporter uses a quote from an online article - a blog, another news corporation, or an official press release - they must specify that the quote was used within that journal, including credits to any author that was listed.

Quotations must never be altered, unless it's only to serve grammatical accuracy or to retain previously agreed to anonymity. The sources exact words should be used, including slang.

Example: Adding words and prefixes such as [the] [an] [-ing], or changing "John Smith told me last week that..." to "[A friend] told me last week..."

GIFTS POLICY:

Individuals, entities or groups that are subject of an article shall not give gifts to the Daily News. In the interest to fair and unbiased reporting, we pay our own way.

If a review is to be written, then SANG shall pay for the product. Journalists and reporters are permitted to receive a product early for review, but they (and SANG as a whole) are expected to reimburse the company for the product. The product must remain with SANG or sent back to the company after the review; it shall not be sold nor given away.

SANG shall reimburse employees for any meals or outings that are pertinent to establishing a story.

SANG employees must give their share of a meal if offered by a subject of an article or by a source. SANG will reimburse the employee for any costs incurred.

Admissions to venues, if working as a member of SANG, shall be permitted.

Any employee that has been found to be in violation to any of these shall be terminated. Misuse of company credit shall result in legal action.

((Out of server incidents in LA / San Andreas statistics

Unless stated elsewhere either through an IC study, an IC statistic offered by the government/LEO departments, or through a statement by management, the paper will use statistics representative of Los Angeles. For example, we will use census data to show population distributions within LA County and simply say that's LS County.

For the interest of world building within our articles, we may reference criminal cases that happened IRL within Los Angeles/Red County/etc. These cases must have taken place before the server's start in 2017, and ideally a few years before that too. Any cases that references a location with LA that isn't represented in the GTA V map (Historic Filipino Town, Huntington Beach, Lancaster, etc.) won't have the neighbourhood listed, or the closest approximation given. (Huntington Beach and Long Beach may be meshed with Vespucci for simplicity, even though Vespucci primarily represents Venice).))

From the EDITING ROOM • May 27th, 2022 - 11:00PM

EDITOR'S ROOM: Daily News and News Network enters negotiations for an advertising partnership.

The proposed deal will see the Los Santos Daily News showcase advertisements by the Los Santos News Networks within it's ad-space.

The Daily News prides itself on unbiased, timely and honest reporting. We take every measure underneath the sun to see that our articles come out at a consistent rate while maintaining the quality that it's known for, including a rigorous review process prior to the publication of each piece as well as a staunch ethics policy that forbids the Daily News, it's affiliates and it's employees from accepting gifts, bribes and "freebies."

Integrity makes or breaks a paper. Without our integrity, there is no trust. And if there is no trust, there is nothing.

As the Daily News continues to grow, recently being revitalized from it's former dormant state, there's been bigger and bigger demands as to the content produced and the overall output of the Daily News. A full blown expansion like what the Daily has planned requires more funding. Without any desire to listen to investors and to sell parts of the company, to remove ourselves beneath the San Andreas New Group/SANG umbrella, and to ensure that our integrity and independence is respected, we have to ensure that any and all methods to procure funding ends with the paper's integrity in mind.

The Los Santos Daily News and the Los Santos News Network has formally entered negotiations for an advertising partnership, where companies who wish to advertise with either corporation may sign a deal with both simultaneously. Any and all existing advertisers with the News Network shall be

The deal with mean that banner-ads that would be shown in News Network's print division will be also showcased within the Daily News' ad-space. The Daily News will retain all rights as to what is and isn't shown within our ad-space to ensure that no business whose essence goes against our core values will be present on either our e-paper or our print paper. The News Network in turn will provide the Daily News with a larger source of income for future expansion in exchange for advertising.

Los Santos - Courtesy of Getty, June 16th 2014, Al. Dov.

What does this mean for the paper?

The paper shall retain it's status as an entity beneath the San Andreas News Group. It will not be incorporated beneath the Los Santos News Network's umbrella, nor is the Daily open to a deal that would require so. Our ideals, beliefs, and policies, will remain ours and SANG's. All that will change for the reader is that banner-ads will become more prevalent.

Outside of our advertising-related webpages, there shall be no branding associated with News Network on the Daily.

The content scheduled to be release, as well as all content in the future, will remain firmly the Daily News' content. Our writing is ours, and it shall stay so until this paper dissolves. Our policies remain exactly the same, and there shall be no influence from News Network's editor's room. The inverse is true, where the News Network will continue to write their own articles and produce their own broadcasts, with the Daily News holding no say over the content of which.

Our policies when it comes to what advertisers will be allowed on the Daily remains the same. Any business that promotes sexual or illegal content shall not be added into our adspace, nor shall political campaigns that breach our ToS. (i.e. no attack ads)

The benefits gained from a deal like this will be apparent within the coming months. The deal will enable us to expand to bring on more writers, hire more freelancers, and allow us to focus solely on delivering the truthful and accurate reporting that we've been known for.

If at any point that the Daily News feels as if this deal causes inadvertent influence on our journalistic practices, whether it's from pressure of News Network's advertisers or otherwise, we will exit out of the deal and any contract signed.

With the monetary benefits from this deal, the Daily will be able to expand to hire more reporters, more journalists, and gain a wider reach across to the citizens of Los Santos County. We're more than happy to work alongside the News Network to support our county's local businesses while delivering the highest quality journalism to our readers' doorsteps.

The rise and rise of the Dead End Brigade

Art, Ben, and Jojo from the Dead End Brigade talk with the Daily about their new song, the process behind making it, their influences, as well as possible plans for the future.

uIK2v9H.png

The Dead End Brigade, live at Stooges. Art on bass and vocals (left), Ben on drums (middle) and Jojo on guitar (right). - Courtesy of Art from the Dead End Brigade.

The Dead End Brigade, one of Los Santos' fastest rising indie punk bands, has been making waves in the national punk scene as of recent. A few months back they concluded their tour to New York City and are now discussing plans for a possible future tour.

Within Los Santos, they're often booked for grunge-themed bars such as Six Rounds and, prior to their accidental fire, Stooges. However, they've also been known to play venues in West Vinewood such as the Split Sides comedy-club.

Art, the lead singer for the band, and Ben, the drummer, joined the Daily News for an exclusive interview. Mags, the bassist, could not attend the interview due to scheduling conflicts

Jojo, the guitarist, took part in a one-on-one interview at a later time.

"Me and Ben been tryna do something for a minute, we known each other for a long time and a couple years ago we started Dead End Brigade, it took a little minute before it started taking off though." Art shared with the Daily's Yunisa Delgadlo-Flores. "I'd say we started gaining some traction like half a year ago?"

Ben also recounts one of their first gigs. "Round new years. We played that one show for an MC then went silent for a bit. Then that's when we started picking it back up, yeah."

Like many other bands' beginnings, it wasn't instant success. Art briefly touched on their experience performing at one of Los Santos' many night clubs. "It was just a failure. Wasn't the venue for us. Happens though."

"I met them after I caught up on their music— plus, they had been playing at the Community Center here in Vespucci." Jojo tells the Daily on how she came to be in the band. "I been playing myself for a while but I never could find a band to play in, DEB was looking for new members and I gladly joined up. And that's how the ship started to sail, dude.

"I started playing guitar when I was fourteen. I was really frustrated with the whole system and what not, being stuck in a strict family or work for some a--holes." Jojo shared, telling the Daily how she used music as an escape from an oppressive household.

"I have four brothers and three sisters, three of my brothers are incarcerated— my sisters are all doing whatever they are doing. Politics, doctors, you name, the whole sha-bang. I graduated in becoming a lawyer myself believe it or not, but I just don't like being stuck to something— you know?

"I don't like work for some a--hole in a suit that tells me what I can and can't do."

The band's style is varied, taking inspiration from a bunch of different sources. As Art described, "All our songs kinda sound different from one another too."

This rings especially true when Art's solo career is taken account, where Art's much mellower solo performances contrasts heavily with the raging rock rampant at a Dead End Brigade show.

p3CbuD2.png

The Dead End Brigade, live at Six Rounds. - Yunisa Delgado Flores. 22nd May 2022, 00:10AM,

The energy behind the Dead End Brigade's live performances can be summed up as loud, violent and thrilling. The music shakes the walls, the vocals screech through the speakers, and the crowd can cause an earthquake. As is common in punk, the mosh pits are frequent at their concerts.

"Yeah, I know people ain't really listening at our shows, they just wanna go crazy and have some fun.", Art tells the Daily. "We try to give them that."

"I kinda envy it.", adds Ben. "We should write a song with no drums so I can go mosh for a couple minutes"

The band just released their new song titled Taking the Cure. Art and Ben shares their process in creating the track and the rest of their songs.

"I was just sitting in the studio and, again, the lyrics just kinda come." Art told the Daily. "I just have to work out a melody that fit em. It's usually me and Ben locked in a room and working something out. He work magic on the drums.

"Sometimes it go in that order, other times it's the other way around"

When asked about any future plans for tours, the noted their large fan-base over in Brazil. Ben immediately suggesting that they go to Brazil, to which Art said their next tour will be kept in the US.

"Yeah, yeah, definitely gonna get a summer tour booked." Art shared. "We got some comments about Brazil but we probably gonna keep the next tour in the US, too."

"I love those peeps out in Brazil, they got a whole different scene going on there" Joey talked about her experience with international fans. "We've have fans all over. Brazil, Europe, even f---ing Asia— like, Japan and all that.

"We're also thinking to do a more international tour someday, but for now? We stick in the US. And I mean like— The UK, Europe, Asia, you name it, dude."

Their next live performance is scheduled to be at the Six Rounds bar in Vespucci on the 3rd of June.

Davis traffic junction marks new initiative by Davis sheriffs and City Council

A cooperative project between the Davis City Council and the LSSD's Davis Station, aiming to prevent drunk driving and to raise awareness on vehicular safety, sees use of sobriety checkpoints in South Los Santos.

Deputies conducting an inspection of a car passing through the checkpoint. - Yunisa Delgado Flores, May 27th 2022.

As of recent, according to the Los Santos Sheriff Department's the amount of vehicular accidents exiting Davis beneath the Olympic Freeway has been on the rise. The primary cause of which being due to driving under the influence.

In an effort to raise awareness and in a method of preventative policing, the Davis City Council and the Los Santos Sheriff's Department led a junction.

Watch Sergeant Percy Meynard of the Los Santos Sheriff's Department, working from Davis Station, led the junction along with fifteen other deputies.

"So the vehicles stop and their identifications are checked to see whether if their IDs are valid or not and then they are briefly examined to see if they are sober or not." Meynard shared, detailing the process of each checkpoint. "If they appear under the influence we ask them to disembark and we conduct a field sobriety test on the motorist."

Each examination also involves the use of a K-9 unit inspecting the exterior of the car.

The checkpoint lasted a total of two hours on May the 27th, from 9PM to 11PM. Over the course of the checkpoint, they inspected a number of vehicles and made one arrest for a DUI.

In a study conducted examining the effectiveness of sobriety checkpoints within the US, paper written by Ames Fell, John Lacey, and Robert Vaos for Traffic Injury Prevention, it was found that the average checkpoint finds 7.7% of drivers have a blood alcohol content over .05.

However, the paper notes a study back in 1995 that compared the effectiveness of checkpoints vs DUI patrols. The study found that alcohol-related crashes declined 28% in checkpoint communities compared to 17% in communities that used highly publicized roving patrols.

Maynard shared this sentiment, where he stated the goal of the junction. "Our goal is not to get arrests."

"Even if one sober driver goes through fine, they'll go home and tell their family and friends that we're out here and we're doing these checkpoints. So hopefully people will think twice about drinking and driving if they know we're out here looking for them."

The paper also noted how checkpoints yield a large number of non-DUI related citations. Fell wrote that "At a minimum, checkpoints provide the opportunity for the officer to remind motorists to buckle up and place children in the rear in child safety seats."

The checkpoints will remain operation in the future, Maynard reported to the Daily. It's overall effects in the rates of drunk driving within South Los Santos remains to be seen.
