Niche RP

Hello.

I'd like to post this thread, unsure if its been done before, to ask the community about niche RP as in roleplay that is normally not done. Like maritime rp, first amendment auditors and the like. I run an ingame ISP which you guys probably have seen the ads for so I want to know what your thoughts on it can be, what can be done ti get more people interested in such RP and how one can "lure" players from dancing in clubs and drinking in bars.

Since we're supposed to be realistic and all, why is nobody doing more niche rp? Not rewarding enough?

For reference, my company > https://dot-it.company.site/

Not rewarding enough, usually it's not 'interesting' enough for other players so you don't really get attention unless its never done, never seen before roleplay. People tend to stick to the popular kind of businesses and such because money is what gets you places on World unfortunately.

I got myself involved in @ThatDutchPerson and their Maritime project because genuinely I have never seen any maritime factions/businesses other than Lifeguards which I found interesting (Which is why they were my characters home at one point - I love niche RP) and why I instantly involved myself with Aurum at the first chance I had.

I find with niche RP, due to the lack of interest. Many roleplay ventures that venture into the field they go into die out within weeks if not days just because people would rather effort for something others will be interested in.

People are too scared to move outside of their comfort zones and would rather stick to their circles both IC and OOC. That's fine of course but you're very rarely going to find people willing to go out of their way to find something new in GTAW.

Can't think of a solution but honestly? I don't really think there's much of one, it's the environment you'd call this server and something that's been baked in to it's roots since it basically started, the majority of the playerbase are here for what's popular and don't care about much else.

Basically this. I had the brief idea to make a completely bland and ordinary office worker till I realized that would just result in me finding absolutely 0 rp especially since people so rarely venture outside of their usual rp group. While it can be fun for a week or two this kind of thing unfortunately eventually dies out.

The goal towards improving Niche R.P. is to accept that there will be days where it is "dead". I've had periods where my niche Psychic shops would be booming, alongside of periods where it's dead... 1 customer, a day, if I was lucky. Remain persistent, and eventually it will attract people.

Aurum Energy and Port Authority are Niche concepts, and they prevail, fairly well.

In regards to non-business or industrial concepts, such as "Police Auditors"? People will observe your roleplay and may eventually be inspired to pursue that path, as-well. Just be sure to do more than "Police Audit", as you'll probably become drained after basing your whole character on that one concept, on a daily basis.

each time i've done this, i've been reported on the forums, shit-talked in faction discords, or berated in PMs. and as much as i don't really care about players getting upset (for some reason) about a very common and prolific activity in the US that never actually makes it past a forum report, it makes it a bit of a commitment to do because i know it's gonna end up in some OOC drama. and that makes less people willing to get involved as they don't want to have to deal with that.

the community, for the most part, shuns away niche RP that isn't part of their very idealistic norm. anyone doing anything outside of the "meta" will be ignored or alienated for being "trolls". go max out an elegy instead and make loads of friends 😄

I think the suggestion someone made about having a forum or some other venue to propose a concept OOC and gauge interest for it might help with this. It's no more metagaming than people agreeing to form a faction together, and it lets you cast a wider net than just your immediate OOC friends. Even proper portrayal of a thing as common as a nightclub or a restaurant feels like a niche interest.

Hello 🙂

Niche RP specialist here (air taxi). It's definitely not easy to find activity overall or attract interest. Most often the problem is convincing people to try it. I noticed people usually don't come see us bc they believe helicopter=expensive or they don't know why they'd hire a pilot. But every one that actually comes and tries it ends up a regular client lol. I got a full sheet, and over 75% of people who come see san air actually end up liking it and come back. I think it's similar with other kinds of more niche stuff. Like record stores. I went in one, once bc someone invited me ic to come check it out and it was really a lot cooler than I thought it would be.

It's funny also bc I'm often trying to find "excuses" to hire niche rp providers lol. Like dot it I was literally waiting to get an office to call them 😄 Or the bug eliminators, same thing I wanted to call them soon as I had the office (but now they're gone, sadly). Pbm is that only a small section of the server pop is interested in those more niche things. But ye for those who don't do it: if you see a weird or unusual kinda business and you're not doing anything, go check it out, I've had plenty of super cool surprises! The key isn't wondering "why would my character go there", but asking yourself "is there any reason why my character would NOT go there?". If there's no reason to avoid the place, then I consider that mere curiosity is reason enough to go check it. The objective's to find and create cool RP, so if there is no reason to avoid it? Then why not 🙂

Yeah, you helped us out once when two customers, who are now blacklisted, stole two boats!

Your helicopter was a great addition to the search.

Anyway, let me give my input on this as CEO of Seo-Hee Min's Maritime. What bothers me the most is people not joining ''because it doesn't pay enough''. Yes, this was literally the reason someone quit our Academy. And while I disagree with that mentality (its about the roleplay, not the money), I do somewhat agree. The jobs we offer pay shit compared to just being a regular bartender number 1234567, and that is a real concern. This means we are unable to offer competitive wages compares to other jobs that are way more profitable; thus hardly anyone is wishing to join our roleplay.

We offer a variety of services, but truth be told is that these services keep getting more and more downtime as the company moves forward while we barely have any staff. Sure, I could pause company progression, but then it gets boring and people wont join again. As of now, we arrived at the point where I am forced to pause company progression.

And funding? Forget about it. Funding would be to primairly pay for staff, and that disqualifies us from LFM funding (even though this Niche RP is exactly what funding was made for). I tried getting office roleplay too in the form of maritime traffic controllers - the funding team deemed this ''unneccesary''.

But we go forward, no matter the setbacks. It is unfortunate we receive little to no help from those that are supposed to help us, but so be it. We offer unique roleplay to the server and unique services to our customers. Aslong as my customers, and my staff, are happy, that is enough payment for me. Unfortunately, that isnt enough payment for a majority of the community.
