DEPUTY MEDICAL EXAMINER

Medical examiners, also known as forensic pathologists, are physician specialists trained in forensic and anatomical pathology. They use their medical skills to determine the cause of death, whether natural, accidental or intentional of the decedents. They also may be required to testify in legal cases, where their skills have been utilized. Furthermore, they may be gathering and examining evidence to determine the cause of death in criminal cases and unnatural or unattended deaths. Moreover, they may be present at the scene of the death to ensure that collected evidence gets safely transported to the laboratory for analysis. It's the medical examiner's job to obtain medical records from hospitals and offices for evaluation. Once they have completed their investigation, medical examiners summarize their findings in writing and give verbal reports. They can serve as expert witnesses and testify in pre-trial and court hearings.

As of 2023 and new leadership, Deputy Medical Examiners who are fresh graduates from a pathology residency, have the opportunity to apply for a Forensic Pathology Fellowship to become certified Medical Examiners.
