Igarro
IRISH ORGANIZED CRIME: ALIVE OR LONG GONE? - Written by Kenneth Mullen, 4th November 2021. "Very much so. Organized crime will always have a place in the American society. For some reason we embrace a romanticized view of all mobsters. We don't want them living next door, but we do enjoy at least the Hollywood version of them." - says Stephen Gray, from the Glossary of the American Organized Crime. The Irish were largely very successful in leaving their mark in American history, and their presence was found everywhere; from simple shop owners to construction firms, from industrial work to medicine, and from Tammany Hall to the White House. They still actively operate but not very prominently (mostly in New England and other areas along the East Coast) but on a way lesser scale on the West Coast. They were once a force to be reckoned with, especially since they introduced organized crime to the United States in Chicago. Since the 80's however, they have been severely weakened by internal feuds, feuds with the Mafia and crackdowns by law enforcement. The Westies in NYC were very powerful and feared even amongst the Mafia. However, the high profile conviction of Jimmy Coonan and other associates have crippled the organization beyond the point of recovery. Their membership is somewhat dwindling and law enforcement operations have put some of their members in jail for a while. Similarly, and following the high profile FBI crackdown on the Winter Hill Gang in Boston during the mid-90's, the Irish Mob in Boston is very much under the radar. They once were a group to be fearful of, even putting the existence of The Patriarca Crime Family at risk once. The K&A Gang however, is becoming one of the most powerful syndicates in Philadelphia. Their membership is growing and their networking is growing exponentially. The West Los Gang was a crew with loose affiliation to the notorious burglary ring that was responsible for hundreds of burglaries in the Southern San Andreas area, allegedly led by Charles "Chucker" Flaherty who was convicted on several counts of Manufacturing A Controlled Substance in 2021. At one time during one of their burglaries where they've been misinformed about a huge amount of cash being stashed, they stumbled upon a sleeping couple. After having the house entirely ransacked and flipped upside down pointlessly, one of the crew members started smashing the woman's legs with a hammer in a desperate attempt to get something out of her boyfriend. Law enforcement obtained the registration numbers of the car that was used by the gang through a neighbor's security camera, they identified one of the accused as Cristopher Hannigan and seized his car. Following his conviction with Burglary and Aggravated Assault, he would later become known as "The Hammer" after doing his full sentence and keeping his mouth shut. The gang brew street people that one would today call as exploiters, or products of their environment. One of those people is Jimmy Kavanagh, who by the time was allegedly selling boosted accessories and slanging drugs with Bill Donnelly around the neighborhood for Flaherty until he was caught up in his indictment. It was pretty much a gritty association fueled by hard drugs and a taste for violence for the gang, and these two had aspired to become professional criminals. Few months after, they would collide paths with the semi-retired Philadelphian gangster Christian "Christy" Moran who had assumed control of the operation. They were bootstrappers who paved their way through life with nerve and audacity, and being the self-serving duo that they have always been is what landed them the opportunity to become Moran's collectors. Nobody would question their ability to get things done. Jimmy Kavanagh elevated his position within the underworld along with his life-long childhood friend Donnelly under Moran's flag, towing the party line and maintaining order. Today he is suspected to be playing a major role on the rise of a new formed gang in Los Santos along with his brother Frank who was convicted with armed-robbery charges back in his prime. And with a critical crew of loyal street guys and ex-convicts sharing interesting backgrounds covering their backs. Who would step up to the Kavanaghs? One's a former enforcer of the now defunct Christy Moran Crew that was running operations out of Nancy's Pub in Hawick, Vinewood. And the other's a local legend who was directly involved in the infamous 2013 raid of an armored truck in San Fierro. The Irish never had a stronghold in Los Santos, and they might never have. But with Moran setting the foundations and improving the gang's standing in the city, you could definitely sense a feeling of community around these guys. Even among major players, there was a presence being imposed in the open market that is Los Santos by Christy Moran and his band of misfits. And for a little while? You could almost say that the sleeping giant who had refused to be woken had a chance to actually get back on its feet. In fact, if the Irish on The West Coast weren't bonded by loyalty like their predecessors in other cities like Philadelphia or Boston. These guys were a prideful tight-knit crew spearheaded by an even prideful and ruthless Jimmy Kavanagh. They are a group of people that know what they're doing, and their share on the streets of Los Santos continues to grow. Irish Pride was truly embed into them. 29 1 1 Link to comment
