Nothing wrong with prostitution roleplay generally speaking. but on the server it's often poorly portrayed by some/all parties involved.

 

From my experience,

 

Majority of prostitutes are doing it for cash and not roleplay/development

Too many self inserts playing out fantasies through their characters

These self inserts, assuming they link up with a well portrayed prostitute char typically are or become weird as fuck OOCly and can't keep stuff in the game.

 

The reason why the server has mostly mallrat whores driving sports cars is because these are the only people willing to put up with the OOC shit given by the masses of weirdos that make up the majority of the client base for them.

Prostitution roleplay, is something that if done right, adds something to the server and the underworld. Prostitution is one of the worlds oldest professions after all, though many of the reasons people get into prostitution roleplay in my experience of roleplaying illegally is flawed. OOC gratification / ic assets rather than development and the correct portrayal. There are many factors that drive people into one the streets prostitution, such as drug-addiction, mental health issues, lack of any other outcomes and even human trafficking / slavery. It's important things like these are portrayed tastefully and realistically. 

 

People who get into such RP with the intention of getting rich and NCing should be dealt with accordingly.

I cringe at most ERP. This server has a lot of minors and late teens ( you can tell by the way they talk and how they live through their character and get involved emotionally way too much ) and ERPing in such a setting feels like you're fine with sexting minors. It's a very real risk as long as the server isn't 18+.

some people really commit to the storytelling and there's definitely been character threads depicting the sex trade that have been tragic and worthy of respect, but when it gets less serious and more related to the social hub/second life type stuff you see in nightclubs/facebrowser (which is fine if you like that) it's really there that the whole escorting thing starts getting too ooc and really removed from what should matter which is storytelling/writing.

 

there is merit to the storytelling aspects, in this thread alone someone had a profile pic that is the cover of william gibson's necromancer, which contains a main character who was a prostitute and graphic mentions of their work. 

 

meh, not a roleplay expert nor have i ever roleplayed an escort but just my thoughts as someone who reads character threads/books

one thing u do as a pimp to make the rp a lot more enjoyable for the prostitute (since they're dealing with the most bullshit) is choose clients who actually want to rp a character, not just get off on some weird electronic cybersex.

Neuromancer is a really good book and it does show those aspects of the seedy underbelly of prostitution. The problem is more often than not prostitution isn't portrayed even remotely like that. 

 

Few people RP the long term duress of prostitution, and even in the case of more upscale escorts, the anomalous lifestyle you end up living. And sadly often those who do do it from a fetishistic angle.
