The status of Davis Mall

Recommended Posts

As others said, you should be able to rent out your own space in the mall. That would make it much more lively. Especially if people opened up spaces in malls and all opened at the same time? Would be crazy.

Not to hurt anyone's feelings but the interior is also quite bland, but I doubt a shiny one would change anything.

I think the location plays a huge role here as it isn't the most ideal for all types of roleplayers considering it is situated in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city and that has to be taken into account regardless if the mall turns into a crime-free zone. My main character never drives souther than Downtown LS unless she absolutely has to because she's widely aware of how high the crime rate is in the area so she would rather not risk getting caught by a bunch of teens who will threaten her life if she doesn't give them her valuables, including her vehicle.

Step one would be giving an actual player or players control of the mall.

Step two would be to actually map it like it should be no discredit to the mappers who worked on it, but its really bland, let someone like @slick!work on it.

Then allow players to possibly lease a spot in the mall for a good amount of money for month, and use it for whatever.

Put somebody in charge of actually managing the mall (a player) and I'm sure you'll see a huge improvement.

This will likely help a lot. Perhaps a small group of ambitious players can bring a proposal to see if they can turn it into a lease, somehow?

Two things for me strike out any usage of the mall and it ultimately rests on the mapping. Absolutely well done to the mappers who took on this project and turned it into a mall, but there's a couple of things lacking from this:

One, the mall itself translate into a Y-Fest with everything locked anyway. The stores should be open floor and easily enterable, not only that there's no theme for the mall itself, it's all a one way white mess and looks like it was quickly made. (Again, thank you to the mappers, but this isn't it)

And two, the "Mall" itself isn't even a Mall IRL, it's based on Slauson Swap Meet which itself would provide much more roleplay than the current middle class styled Mall we have, Slauson itself is a very much poor styled area houses in what looks like a large warehouse compared to what we have now.

And I know that the replies will be "Well, why don't you do better", I did.
(WIP obviously)

I can't add reactions anymore today, but, this.

Not just in regards of the mall, I've recently seen an overabundance of "interiors" being created for outside events even.

While this allegedly happens for performance reasons, it robs a major part of the atmosphere when for example a crowd on an open place is not visible from afar for arriving people.

Same as for mall stores, the interactive approach (which is the core of roleplaying in groups imo) suffers under this design, when a shop vendor cannot greet bypassing people, being shoved into a (further) alternate dimension.

It is really done for performance reasons. It'd be great if it was viable outdoors, but it simply isn't.

Simply making the mapping prettier won't really create what the mall needs - a need for players to visit it.

Currently visiting the mall has no purpose, but let's understand why that is the case from a practical level in the current game.

The reason no-one needs a mall (or goes to it), is because there simply isn't enough variety in available items - Except for vehicles, everything is thrown together in a single business and sold as a generic 'clothes' 'jewelry' 'grocery' store.

If these generic stores were broken down into 4-5 stores of each type, so that you have clothing split into multiple brands (just like we have vehicles split into different outlets), then suddenly it means players have to travel around the map alot more to do all their shopping. (i.e. create specialist outlets).

This is where the mall comes in.

By implementing something like the above, you can then put copies of each clothing store into the same location & then you give the mall the role that it has in the real world - a convenient place to do all your shopping in one place.
