What would be a good portrayal of a character that lives in Blaine County?

Recommended Posts

A character who knows how to build stuff of their own and more independent from city folks, because not everything is accessible to them. A character who has to step up in order to protect his own because response times would realistically be slower than in city.

"Rural folk" come in all different shapes and sizes. As others have pointed out, just because they live in a small town doesn't mean they inherently act a certain way. However, there are some common traits shared by people who live in rural communities that influence their behavior. The best way to describe these traits is to explain who they have been turned into stereotypes.

1. Rural folks for the most part don't see themselves as racist or act in what they consider as an outwardly racist manner. People from rural areas spend their whole lives in a close knit, undiversified community. While some may portray openly the racist redneck stereotypes, the vast majority of them may only be unintentionally racist or tone deaf. Their lacking in diverse upbringings feeding a false narrative about other culture and races.

In their mind blacks and Hispanics are good hard working people, but there are also some who are blood thirsty criminals. When confronted by these other races or cultures in person their mind assumes the latter.

2. Rural folks aren't dumb but they also aren't handy man geniuses. Peoples portrayal of rural peoples mental capacity is always one of two things. Absolute idiot OR Idiot who is a wizard with mechanical things. In reality rural folks fall somewhere in the middle, their education and technical skills focused on things that are practically for them.

In a practical sense this means, is your redneck buddy going to be a genius with cars? No, but he probably knows enough about engines to diagnose an issue and get it semi running again.
