“Cocaine Cortez" Slammed with a Lifetime Ban Over Anti-Doping Violations

By Jason Jones

February 20, 2020

Newly crowned IBF welterweight King Cortez Santana was sentenced to a lifetime ban after testing positive to two banned substances; Clenbuterol and Cocaine.

The sentence stipulates that Cortez Santana is banned to participate or be involved in any SASAC and all four major boxing sanctioning (WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF) bodies events for life.

“Mr. Santana must be held accountable for his egregious act of violating our anti-doping rules. We have ramped up our campaign to level the playing field for our athletes and will not be afraid to hand more lifetime bans to violators.” says, SASAC President Ricco Sulaiman.

The Chamberlain Hills-native fighter recently moved to Las Venturas to focus and dedicate his life to his boxing dreams. Since the move he has accumulated 10 straight wins, 8 wins by way of knockout and 2 wins by TKO (referee stoppage). His record improved to 21 wins and 1 loss.

This snowball momentum and newly found fame earned him the title shot last June. However, critics still believed that he was the underdog coming into the fight, as it was his first world title shot at 19 years old against an elite level champion.

Nonetheless, the hype proved to be real as he delivered once again in spectacular fashion knocking out Luis Ortiz with a check left hook with eight seconds left in the first round.

A day later, Santana tested positive for Clenbuterol and Cocaine. Rumors were circulating before the bout, that Santana was having a hard time making weight and was aiming to move up to middleweight after his bout with Luis Ortiz.  Clenbuterol historically, has been used by fighters to lose fat but not lose muscle mass, studies have shown that this gives an unfair advantage to the user as he retains his strength and power even while losing weight and in a caloric deficit.

Santana has built reputation of heavy partying and drug abuse even within fight camps. Although, this has been denied several times by the Santana camp. Testing positive for Cocaine may not be a surprise for many boxing pundits and fans.

His career success now is forever tainted and has been put to a screeching halt because of this scandal.

Also, The SASAC has overruled the KO win to a No Contest. Thus, Ortiz will regain his welterweight title.

Santana and his team are set to appeal the Athletic Commission’s decision.

Santana and his lawyers have refused to give a statement as of this moment.
