[Opinion Blog] Governor Brandt actions are those of a dictator and promotes totalitarianism

Recommended Posts

This week, the city of Los Santos can only stare in disbelief as Governor Brandt overturned a unanimous decision of the state senate, the representatives of the citizens of our city and vetoed the marijuana legislation bill that had passed the senate floor.

In January 2021, representatives of our government convened in City Hall and debated the bill in the senate. Elected representatives of our democracy also asked for expert medical professional statements. The support was completely bi-partisan, with every elected official and testimonies from experts such as Dr. Danielle Shaw all speaking in support of the legalization bill.

Having passed the senate floor, the bill simply required ratification via the state governor for it to be passed into law. However, in an act entirely unbefitting of democracy and in breaking from not just his own Democratic party, but also the bi-partisan nature of the bill, Governor Brandt vetoed the bill.

According to a gallop poll taken in November of 2020, the support for marijuana has never been so strong. 68% of American's support it's legalization, and there is a sweeping trend across the nation for states to pass either decriminalization or full legalization laws. Only 3 states across our nation remain without some level of Cannabis legalization or decriminalization.

Governor Brandt defended his actions of accusations of his abuse of power by defending his actions in a statement:

"Many people around the State of San Andreas have expressed concern about the veto I issued, some going as far as to call me a dictator."

There is a fundamental truth with regards to democracy. It is equally important to accept policies you do not agree with when they have been progressed legally and with support of the majority of the population as it is to accept those you agree with.

The city had spoken, elected representatives had voted and with his own words he dismissed the majority of San Andreans and every single elected official with the following.

"I feel that the State of San Andreas isn't ready for full legalization of marijuana and that more work needs to take place in order to achieve that goal." - Governor Brandt

Putting personal preference and outdated views above that of every single elected official in the state is precisely the actions of a tyrant, a dictator and a despot.

His dismissive attitude demonstrates a complete lack of disregard for the majority of citizens of our state and is a complete act of tyranny demonstrated by a man clinging shamelessly to power, refusing to accept the will of a democratic government and violates the fabric of American democracy.
