Edit/Clarification of Rule 17

At present the specific part of Rule 17 that I'm suggesting be changed is as follows;

Quote

Illegal advertisements are not allowed even if the intent behind them is hidden or attempted to be hidden IC. Players are expected to use other IC methods to distribute illegal items or services.

You may NOT use /ad for the following under any circumstances;

  • illegal advertisements of any kind;
  • advertising the sale of knives or lock picks when the person selling does not have a licensed business to do so;

Whilst switchblades and knuckle dusters are not currently illegal in the game laws - the advertisement using /bad and /ad is highly unrealistic, I think a generic statement should be that the "pawn shop" is open selling XYZ but switchblades, knuckles and lockpicks cannot be included in it. This forces players to go to the stores and have a look at their stock thus creating roleplay.

On the topic of advertising lockpicks - They're essentially tools that are used to break into peoples houses/cars, they wouldn't be sold enmasse to  people in public settings, the IC laws state the following;

Quote

307. Possession of Burglary Tools (M)

Any person(s) having upon him or her in his or her possession a picklock, crow, key bit, crowbar, screwdriver, vise grip pliers, water-pump pliers, slim jim, tension bar, lock pick gun, tubular lock pick, bump key, floor-safe door puller, master key, ceramic or porcelain spark plug chips or pieces, or other instrument or tool with intent to breach a lock without possession of proper licensing.

AS SOON AS someone steps out of that pawn shop store they're committing a misdemeanour offence by being in possession of burglary tools, whether people like it or not that's how it is. So for the sheer amount of people who come into pawn stores buy a lockpick then walk out like its a normal thing to do is beyond realistic, what instead should be happening is pawn stores selling them yes, but it should be more hidden out of the way style.

TLDR;

  • Disallow the advertisement of lockpick, knuckles and blades in the /ad /bad /cad.
  • Disallow the sale of lockpicks specifically through the /shop script OR have some sort of ruling on realism when players are purchasing them.

I kind of agree, I suppose the wording could be changed for Pawn shops to keep selling such items to something as simple as "Kitchen Utensils, home and trade hardware tools" etc

Might work but might also just incite people to metagame since everyone knows what you're talking about, like replacing 'fully modded' with 'performance package'.

They have a licensed business to sell them. They're within the rules and their behavior is entirely realistic - if you have items that sell well, you advertise them.

In addition, we had a court case about the very law you cited; your argument doesn't hold water.

You may notice they specify "without possession of proper licensing" as a caveat to the law. There currently exists no law or statute defining "proper licensing," and even if there were, the idea that a screwdriver is illegal to own without the aforementioned license is ridiculous.

The end result of that particular issue in the legal battle was predictable; since no licensing authority has been established to regulate the aforementioned tools, the law is essentially unenforceable.

If you think someone is breaking the law, start an IC petition. Far as the rule goes, I don't see the merits of the edits you're suggesting.

Hi! The rule state:

  • ads selling or buying legal firearms or other legal weapons outside of a licensed business;

This includes knives in legal weapons. Of course, some pawnshops or other businesses will always sell these that are illegal sometimes. Lockpicks are not illegal.

Going to L&A this because as it is - it's not necessarily against the rules to sell thins if your business is not registered.
