Can Russians understand the Chechens language?

When meeting a Chechen outside of Chechnya most likely going to hear them speaking Russian or attempting to learn it. Chechens outside of Chechnya most likely speak Russian, and MOST Russians cannot speak Chechen

Can Russians recognize Chechens and other Caucasian peoples and tell them apart by sight?

People from North Kavkaz are usually average height, muscular and not thin, with dark but not fully black hair, not as light-skinned as Russians, and with sharper facial features, especially Chechens and Ossetians, but obviously different from Georgians who live on the other side of a mountain ridge - it is easy to tell the Georgian look, language and accent in Russian.
