Can Law Enforcement Cope Alone?

Last week saw a rather busy period for Los Santos county law enforcement, with official figures still yet to be released by the LSPD, it seemed as though the sirens were non-stop. As residents recover from the spree of car chases, shootings and murders, people are starting to question how safe the streets actually are. As fresh recruitment drives open for the LSPD and LSSD in a bid to bolster law enforcement presence on our streets, some say that this is simply not enough and have taken their own measures to protect their interests and property.

We at the Los Santos News Network gained exclusive access to representatives from two different parties, both trying to make Los Santos a safer place by their own means. Questions were raised about their existence and why their is a requirement for their services.

Interview with local militia 'The Defenders'

I spoke to Walter Baker (pictured above), Chairman of 'The Defenders' local militia in an exclusive, one-off interview and touched on the topic of why now more than ever, local militia groups such as his have gained traction and interest from the public. The following questions were asked, viewable in the transcript below:

Reporter: Tell me a bit about what your group is and what it stands for?

Mr. Baker: Our group aims to protect the right to own and bare arms. But we feel that a group such as our own should have a strong presence in the community.

Reporter: Do you think that law enforcement is ready to face current criminal activity?

Mr. Baker: The criminal circuit in LS is very organized, the LSPD are capable of handling the, lets say small fish.

Reporter: But the need for a militia must come from a kind of, fear wouldn't you agree? What has prompted you and your followers to take up this responsibility?

Mr. Baker: The police cannot act in the same way a militia can, Law enforcement simply isn't trained in such a way, and yes the sudden increase in crime sure is a factor that caused us to exist.

Reporter: What capabilities do you have as a militia in terms of weaponry?

Mr. Baker: I prefer not to comment on that as its somewhat sensitive information.

Reporter: OK I understand but we can assume that all your hardware is legal of course?

Mr. Baker: Of course.

Reporter: Last but not least, do you see yourself having to carry out a your role as a militia in the near future, will your time come to deploy the militia?

Mr. Baker: Well that's all up to the politics I would say. As long as law enforcement does a good job and politicians don't tighten up gun laws I see non need. But if that ever changes, Sure.

Shortly after, Mr. Baker took us to his truck to show us some of this alleged hardware which he feels is necessary to feel safe in Los Santos. Arguably the equipment was enough to stay safe in a war zone but it goes to show the lengths at which citizens of this county are going to in order to keep themselves safe. Interestingly enough Mr. Baker talked about law enforcement not carrying out business in the same way a militia would, which begs the question of whether such business would be conducted in a strictly legal manner? Furthermore, Mr. Bakers reluctance to talk about the nature of the groups arsenal also could pose various hypothetical questions when looking to these groups in times of need, nevertheless there are genuine, good intentions within The Defenders group.

Interview with Gruppe6 Security PR Manager

I was given the chance to have a face to face appointment with head of PR from Gruppe6 Security, a private security firm that offers services such as asset protection, system installation, escorts and surveillance. I asked how the steady rate of crime is having an effect on their business and the findings unveiled a much more sinister problem within Los Santos. See the transcript below;

Reporter: Would you say the use of your services at Gruppe6 have increased in line with specific crimes? And where do you see the majority of your business location wise?

PR Manager: We haven't actually seen that much of a difference, we've gained some contracts but also lost some, but I'd also like to point out, most businesses seem hesitant to take out arm in helping them. We offer very affordable security services but the main thing preventing us from expanding is, well crime as well.

Reporter: How does crime stop you from expanding as a business? Surly a security firm would thrive in this environment?

PR Manager: Businesses are afraid to take our arm because the businesses we offer our services to and refuse, tend to be the ones that are also getting extorted.

Reporter: So this extortion, can you be sure it is happening in Los Santos?

PR Manager: Extortion is an on-going issue, some people do it well, some people do it poorly, but do you know why no-one tells the police? Because people are being extorted by cartels, syndicates, high-end stuff, one person gets arrested and you can believe that your business will end up in ashes.

Reporter: So I can see why maybe citizens may seem reluctant to get in touch then with yourselves and the police.

PR Manager: That's why we exist, I believe us to be a front line for battling extortion.

Reporter: And do you work or have you ever worked with the LSPD on a project?

PR Manager: No, not at all, we keep offering the city the chance to employ us as a neighborhood watch but the city shows absolutely no interest in that.

It is abundantly clear that services such as Gruppe6 and The Defenders have good intentions and serve to protect the public interests in Los Santos, but will there come a time where law enforcement calls upon external agencies for help?. Low level crime is being swallowed up and overtaken by much more organised, serious criminals as they maintain a hard grip on the cities small businesses according to a leading security firm based in Los Santos and this may call for more resources from the LSPD.

The fact is the law enforcement in Los Santos County do a tremendous job given the circumstances and all the men and women currently serving must be given credit where it is due. As mentioned by both parties, their services have been offered to law enforcement and the government already with little or no success, at a time when local initiatives are at an all time low with only the Hope Health center offering any kind of community support, could this be the answer to the growing problem? Only time will tell and hopefully scenes like we have all become so used to seeing start to decline in the coming weeks.

Comment:  What they gonna do, throw rocks at the criminals. LSPD has a Million Dollar budget and this "Militia" looks like they bought their gear from Binko. Maybe they'll make the criminals die of laughter. Why are you interviewing the Circus clowns? Go make an article on how HOT Hawaiian Snow is right now! Shit's fire, man.

I'll take a discount for this comment, snow dudes. You're welcome! 😉
