The Medical Consequences of Sexual Harassment

Sexual Harassment in Los Santos

Elizabeth Rankin

The Equal Rights Amendment - an amendment for the United States Constitution to give women and men full equal rights, first proposed in 1923, made progress this year after Virginia became the thirty-eighth state to ratify it. Despite this, however, the Equal Rights Amendment has yet to find it's way into the United States Constitution, leaving women yet to be considered truly equal in federal law. At LSNN, we analyse one of the issues still facing both men and women in our city today - the undeniable prevalence of sexual harassment. We spoke to several women to gather their thoughts.

One of the most prevalent themes of our conversations with women in Los Santos is the feeling that they generally feel unsafe in public alone - suggesting that, irregardless of where they are, they are often sexually harassed. One woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told LSNN that, despite appealing to a bouncer for help with someone who was following her around the bar, they were shrugged off and told to deal with it themselves, highlighting the culture of blame common in our society. Both of the following women asked to remain anonymous in their participation.

Could you talk more on your experiences?

W1: One prominent moment was, for me, when I was out, perhaps in the early morning, on my morning run. Usually, I don't have any problems other than people slowing down as they drive past me or something like that. Anyway, this one morning, a guy on a motorcycle stopped his bike right next to me, asking if I wanted him to 'take me on a ride'. I politely declined, and that was the end of it. Or so I thought - this guy continued to follow me around Vespucci - I had completely lost all will to run at that point, anyway, he came back - continued to beg me - 'please, let me take you for a ride, babe.' It was incredibly frustrating, you know? I just felt completely unsafe - I had to get a taxi home.

W2: I'm harassed - perhaps once a week? Usually outside my home in Vespucci, or outside my work. Mainly catcalling - one time, my employees vehicle was broken into by a gang in that area. The issue with it is in peoples culture - the people in charge try to crack down on it, but cultures seem to prevail. Whenever it happens to me, it feels weird, but I also feel concern for the mental well being of the perpetrators. I haven't reported it - I suppose that's my fault.

W1: I actually have tried to report it myself - several times, actually, I don't know if it's a lack of staffing or a lack of interest in following it up, but I've never even had a call-back when I've tried to report sexual harassment. This, to me, allows the perpetrators to run unchecked - why bother changing your behaviour if there's nothing out there to enforce proper behaviour? Obviously, it comes down to education as well - some people just never get taught you should teach other people better than a piece of meat.

Comment: the men in this town are constantly thirsting and always angry if you dont just immediately spread your legs. they get even angrier if you tell them youre anything but straight. doesnt help that most unskilled young women tend to flock to pornography, stripping or whoring blinded by money and nefarious bastards.
