The problem of being new?

Hey guys I have 2 point to quickly say..

1. I Finally got unbanned after nearly 2 weeks from my 3 day ban...  YAAAAY

2. This Thread has opened my eyes alot.. I'm glad that people are having nice conversations and it's interesting to see older members of this community interact with newer members ?

Thanks to you guys I've been able to have a second shot at this and I'm gonna take what I've learned here and properly apply it into my character ?

Props for starting some dialogue here I guess, and congrats on your unban.

@HaveADream has a great beginner guide up on the forums for anyone who is new and may wish to view it.. It's here. (There's a guide link inside it that shows most commands you'll use.)

Maybe we should make a specific section on the forums for new players and throw everything in there that players would need to know as forums aren't the easiest to sift through, I think for a lot of new players who may even be familiar with mediums of RP still get confused at the amount of commands and multiple forums/forum sections.

The problem with GTA 5 as a whole is that there aren't many text based RP servers so players often have to join this one as there first. With servers like GTA W you are usually expected to have basic knowledge of RP especially with /me and /do etc commands that most RP servers share. I know from being a SAMP player originally when I first started RPing it was kind of the norm to start on a lower level RP server to gain some experience and or watch a lot of youtube.

GTA W is quite strict when it comes to RP standards and they do make it hard to lay low while you learn, if there was a server that could help players learn the basic ideas of RP it'd help.

But I think GTA W isn't trying to get players who've never RP'ed in there life, they are trying to get players who have some experience / knowledge. From what I can gather they don't mind helping players learn the server but the player not knowing anything at all isn't there job. If a player actually wants to RP I feel it is expected they do some research themselves and learn. There's no need to be godly at roleplay or a professional and know the server off by heart. When I started to RP many years ago now I hardly could spell, but I learned specifically so I could play (not sure how my grammer is still as you can probably gather, it isn't the best).

GTA W is always trying to provide high quality RP, sometimes to high quality. WIth how big the playerbase is if they lose a few players as they are not willing to learn themselves in there own time it isn't going to make to much difference.

Just how I see it, I really wish GTA W could cater for everyone but that is not easy to do. They try there best though.

I think you have a valid concern. I do not agree with the way new players are currently thrown to the farming job all the way in bum fuck Sandy Shores. I think there should be another way for those new players to get accustomed to this serious 'heavy' text RP style.

All it takes is to read the rules and basic guide. Rest is common sense, I believe that the staff doesn't want anything more or less than basic knowledge of commands and standard situations. That's not really a rocket science and only takes few minutes of one's time. There is nothing like an elite roleplayer or something like that. It's even in the application, to recognize examples of so called "bad roleplay" it honestly ain't that hard. Also script jobs are encouraged to be roleplayed, not grinded. You have first 40 hours paychecks for it. Just a little patience. The first and pretty much most important step for anyone is, to stop treating GTA World as GTA Online with rpg features, that's where most of people fall hard usually.

My best suggestion is to try and join a faction, leaders and veterans in the factions will help you more than likely. Yes, this is a heavy roleplay server, but we're also one of the only GTA 5 text based so people joining here also need to learn how to roleplay here (in my opinion), we were all noobs once. Being too harsh gets us no where and just pushes everyone away. I remember being a noob in 2009. You live and learn.

GTAW has very high standards, and for good reason.

GTAW players often have storylines that go on for weeks or months.  The great majority of players take rp seriously and put a lot of effort into it.  Careless, ignorant, or troll players can ruin scenes that people have put a lot of effort into.  This forces heavy rp players to come out of their immersion to void scenes or divert their focus to getting inconsiderate players to knock it off.

We're required by the rules not to ignore people's rp, so when people are screwing up it's not funny and it's not cool.  It's a big waste of time.  It's the difference between stage diving at your favorite live music bar and going to the symphony.  If someone acts in the symphony like they do in the live music bar, people are going to tell him to knock it off and the admins will escort him out.

A great many rp servers are light rp, where a lot of people are in it for the laughs.  That's not the case here.

Not knowing the commands is not a big deal.  I forget most of them every time I go away and come back.  Not taking rp seriously, not staying in character, playing it for laughs, and not abiding by the rules, those are a big deal.  You didn't do that, but people coming over from other light or medium rp servers often do.  Pestering people, powergaming, lashing out in boredom or for laughs, putting their characters out there as if they're the top mafia assassin in Los Santos or some other unrealistic thing, this stuff doesn't fly and the hardworking admins put people in time out until they can figure out how to act in one of the heaviest rp servers out there.

The difference in standards of behavior is the biggest issue.  The difference between rping a scene that lasts an hour and then disappears when its over and rping one's character as a person that has a continuing life in which every scene is an event in his life, that's a big difference that a lot of people aren't accustomed to.

New players are awesome, and every new player has the potential for great new stories and new interactions.  To help new players ease into GTAW's high standards heavy rp style, I think some voluntary mentorship partners might be a good idea.  I'd be willing to do it.  Admins could look at a new player's application, and if necessary suggest hooking up with an in-game mentor.  Not a required school, but something like, hey, contact this person on the forums, arrange a time when you're both in game, and get some mentoring until you have the basics down, and practice a little bit, both for commands and how people rp here'.

I have been a member of this community for over a year now. I never had issues with an admin or any other staff member. I had some small issues with other players, but nothing major that couldn't be solved with a small conversation. My experience so far has been great and I cherish all those memories I built here. That for I am gonna list you a few tips, that I believe you will find helpful.

1: Value other players experience equally as yours. We are all investing time from our lives here, regardless if that time is many hours a week or just a few minutes a day. So regardless of your IC development, you should always stay polite OOCly, even if you come across a toxic person, getting on the same level won't make you better than them. Stay calm, stay polite and make known of their behaviour to the staff team, either by reporting in-game or by submitting a forum report thread.

2: Always stay in character and never mix IC with OOC. Separate your character from your real self, allow him/her to think in a different way than you. Allow your characters to make mistakes that you wouldn't do yourself in real life. Think of them as a completely separate being. We should neither portray ourselves nor embody their role as actors. Roleplay is often considered acting, but it's more like writing a story. We are witnessing the lives of our characters when their existence and personality come to life through interactions with others.

3: Your character should always think and act realistically always according to their experiences and development. Allow your characters to have fears and appreciate them as they can generate interesting roleplay.

4: Avoid bad examples. While I was new to this server, I tried my best to adapt in this new to me then environment. Many times I was acting like a chameleon, adapting to my surroundings and following examples that then I thought they were great. As time went by those examples were replaced by better ones and I discovered mistakes that I did before. It's not just the character stories we develop, but our roleplaying skills as well.

5: Take your time with everything and enjoy the journey. Driving from Los Santos to Paleto with 130mph in under a minute will give you a feeling that the map is small. Having a slower car or even driving slowly can make it feel like an actual journey. Enjoy the small details you will notice on the way or couple of songs you might hear on the radio. Make stops for rest or refreshments and toilet, or even have a conversation with the passengers of your vehicle
Also, take your time with your character's development. The more you rush it, the sooner it will feel like a game over as grinding won't make you look cool. There is a lot more roleplay around a rusty emperor, without plates and broken engine, rather than any supercar.

6: Don't be afraid to say no when it comes to offensive RP. If it's not the development that you seek for your character, then you have every right to refuse any atrocious actions. Being a victim of rape, for example, would change your character's life forever. Realistically speaking it's very close to a CK, I don't think anyone would stay in the same area or even city after experiencing that. If you ever decide to be part of it, make sure it serves a better purpose other than a group of players laughing in voice chat in discord. Gang members here tend to have OOC connections with each other as they communicate with each other a lot over discord. While I was experiencing illegal roleplay, I realized that some players cannot exist as a unit and always seek to be part of a team or group. Finding a common target often helps them bond with the rest of the members and I am not willing to ruin my character's development just to serve as common ground between them.

7: Lastly, report the wrongs bit don't seek punishment. In-game reports and forum player reports should have an educational nature. Taking joy in someone's ban is sign of toxicity. Try always to bring the reported party to the right path and make them understand their wrongs. This is a growing community that welcomes new members every day, so it needs a lot of support. Report any wrong behaviors but don't be revengeful, so the community can grow larger and healthier.

While I've roleplayed in the past at lsrp and I have experience in RP, I even find it hard being a new player here. People already have their groups, their IG stories and you have to find people to RP with. Map is big, and there isn't an Idlewood Pizza Stacks for people to meet others. For someone with little RP experience it'd be 10 times harder.

That's how things work on any good server, hell thats how things work in reality. You don't suddenly get a group of friends to hang with. And Idlestacks was hardly the pinnacle of RP quality. Anyone that went there to find good friends was not going to have a fulfilling time.
