Nathan James Coleman was born into an upper-middle class family in Ocean Flats, San Fierro. Young Nathan Coleman was exposed to a high degree of conservatism as a result of Ocean Flats' Catholic nature and upper class mentality, raised in a neighbourhood rich with high-ranking government officials ranging from the police department, fire department and local government. Coleman's father, James, held a senior position within the San Fierro Police Department and was a career-driven man who often neglected his son and fatherly duties in favour of his service. The father's absence led to a dominant gap in Coleman's development with basic requirements left unattended, be it the traditional ball game or father-and-son conversations. It silenced the manly nature within Coleman that was otherwise badly needed. However, Coleman's mother wholeheartedly dedicated herself to Coleman in a hopeless attempt to fill the void his father had left. Coleman attended Abraham Lincoln High School. Coleman's educational path was troublesome—mirroring his childhood—and he led the life of an outcast due to his feminine nature that was scarcely understood in a Catholic neighbourhood. While managing to maintain friendships in low volumes, Nathan's social life was dented and thus impacted his general standing and outlook on life in a negative way. Due to his femininity and inability to fit into social circles, Coleman questioned his own nature from early on. Nevertheless, he managed to achieve impressive results in school.

Coleman was accepted into the University of San Andreas (UCLSA) in Richman, Los Santos. Escaping the Catholic, strict eyes of his family and neighbours, Coleman slowly managed to crawl out of his insecure shell and develop himself given the freedom he was now exposed to. College life naturally pushed him into different directions, meeting free thinkers who he felt aligned with more often than not, considering Los Santos' large liberal community. Coleman developed a romantic interest in Aiden Walsh—an Irish exchange student with whom he first realised his homosexual nature—which resulted in his growing rebellion towards his parents' teachings. Coleman kept his relationship with Walsh a secret until his graduation and return to San Fierro, informing his parents who, as a result, disowned Coleman. Clueless and with a lost sense of feeling, Nathan relocated to the environment he felt most comfortable with and settled in Los Santos. However, his relationship with Walsh ended shortly afterwards. Coleman thereafter ran various meaningless jobs, provided community and charity work and volunteered at events related to homosexuality and its promotion. To pay the bills, Coleman worked in sales and managed to work himself up to a managerial position.

Coleman became an operative at the Diamonds Casino and befriended his boss, Michael Browman, whom he developed a romantic relationship with. Given Browman's high place in society, their relationship was rocky and unsure from the start but has since managed to survive. However, Coleman became painfully aware of his lack of ambition in life and therefore resigned at the casino, instead choosing a career in law enforcement, perhaps as a way to follow his father's footsteps in an subconscious manner. In spite of Coleman's otherwise feminine nature and lack of parental support, he excelled at his position in the Los Santos Police Department (LSPD) and has since started climbing the hierarchy at an impressive speed, showing keen talent for what seems to run in the family. Nowadays Coleman works on his aspirations to join the detective team in order to tackle the city's growing crime problem at hand while living a modest life. While the wounds of his past have never truly recovered and remained scars instead, Coleman's perseverance has led him through this narrow passage and onto green pastures.
