PILLBOX HILL MEDICAL CENTER OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

- AS PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION -

Los Santos, SA ~ Wednesday January 26th, 2022.

Resulting from months of discussion, reviewing and planning, Pillbox Hill Medical Center will become the first medical institute in Los Santos to provide an ALS Paramedic program to compliment and expand upon the resources currently provided by the Los Santos Fire Department.

The system is designed to maintain critical road-side medical assistance to combat the shortfalls for the Los Santos County’s EMS system, bolstering the reliability and efficiency of the existing system. The program will see an increase in the number of ALS (advanced life support) providers immediately available to the existing emergency 911 system.

Pillbox began a recruitment drive early into the program to ensure our team had the time and resources to bring on industry professionals that will enable us to provide the service. The recruitment has been overwhelmingly successful, and the new ALS paramedic’s will be an invaluable resource. We welcome them to the Pillbox family and recognize their responsibility and motivations to deliver a critical service.

We also announce that the service will start with two Pillbox branded ambulances in the initial stages, while demand is gauged, and the overall system is evaluated. These vehicles will enable the Pillbox ALS paramedic’s to be dispatched to emergency calls, in tandem with the service provided currently by the Fire Department.

We are incredibly proud of the team for coming together for the first deployment and we commend the Fire Department's assistance and transparency to work with Pillbox in this capacity.

Pillbox will continue to work closely with the Los Santos Fire Department to review the overall success of the service, as well as investigate ways to expand upon it in future months should there be a requirement.

The implementation of the program recognizes the Fire Department and Pillbox integrating in a crucial way, aligning values and priorities for the betterment of medical services within Los Santos. While all agencies maintain a close working relationship, it is exciting to see how this partnership will develop and improve the local medical service moving forward.

Doctor Elizabeth Miller, Program Medical Director, is one of the many minds behind the project who nurtured it's progression until fruition. On the unveiling of the program, she said:

Doctor Mina Frey, Program Supervisor and creator, nurtured the project with several others in the Department of Mental Health Services. On the unveiling of the program, she said:

Quote

"For a very long time, I was looking for a hospital that can give me both involvement and patients. Pillbox Hill Medical Center has been that hospital ever since I was hired here. When I joined the Department of Mental Health Services as a Psychiatrist-Neurologist, I noticed that the hospital and department are lacking in a Psychiatry Residency, so the next day I got to work and after a month I presented the idea to my colleagues. I would like to thank Director Shaw, Dr. Castillo, and Dr. Lions for implementing this program, giving hope to future Psychiatrists.”

As a lead medical health provider in the City, Pillbox continues to encourage young professionals to keep seeking their footing in the industry and invites them to apply and join the family. With aligned goals and expectations for the future, we’re proud to show off Pillbox as it continues to evolve and we’re excited to share the continued growth and success.

We continue the year of awareness by focusing on another disease that still exists, despite many thinking it is long since extinct. As a consequence, those suffering with the condition are largely forgotten too, and so it’s vital to bring attention back so we can educate more on this condition.

What is Leprosy?

Also known as Hansen’s disease, leprosy is a chronic and infectious disease that affects most commonly, the individual’s skin, however it may also affect the upper respiratory tract, eyes and peripheral nerves. As many countries move towards a more medically advanced era, many are left behind and this is where leprosy is significantly more common. It does not discriminate, affecting young and old alike, however it is curable and if treated during its early stages, long-term disabilities are preventable.

Leprosy is thought to be transmitted via droplets expelled from the nose and mouth when the affected individuals cough or sneeze, and an uninfected person breathes this in. However, it is believed that prolonged close contact with someone with undiagnosed or untreated leprosy is needed in order to catch the disease, a timeframe spanning over several months. Scientifically speaking, the disease is known for its low pathogenicity, and the majority of individuals that contract the bacteria do not continue to develop the disease.

Armadillos are the most known carriers for the disease, therefore those working closely with the animals are advised to exercise caution when handling.

Does Leprosy still exist?

Yes, despite popular belief, the disease does still exist, however it is no longer an uncontrollable or untreatable disease. The name instills fear into many however, the fact remains that the condition is largely treatable and most make a full recovery with no long-lasting issues.

What are the symptoms of leprosy?

Leprosy can take years to fully manifest into noticeable symptoms, as is the nature of the bacteria that causes the disease. Some patients see symptoms within three years, others have taken significantly longer.

As a direct result of how long it takes for leprosy signs to show, it can be very difficult to know if symptoms are related to the disease. Common early signs include:

  • Rashes
  • Under-skin swelling
  • Numbness or loss of feeling around a rash
  • Numbness in a finger or toe
  • Increased sensitivity to light

How is leprosy cured?

As simple as it sounds, antibiotics are the treatment for leprosy. Complications occur when the disease has caused another condition, blindness, loss of damage and so forth, which antibiotics will not cure. These disabilities are permanent and non-reversible.

Can we prevent Leprosy?

Increased awareness is the best pro-active prevention technique. The bacterial needs prolonger exposure to an uninfected individual, therefore simple life changes can be enough to make the difference. That said, leprosy is not easily caught.

As Armadillo’s are potential carriers of the bacteria that causes leprosy, and are native to Central and South America, with exceptions as the species broadens and evolves. Commonly armadillo’s have been known to make their habitats in overgrown gardens, where the occupants were unaware, but exposed to the bacteria over many years.

The disease is now more common in countries like Brazil, Indonesia and India, therefore those travelling frequently to see friends or family should be aware.

If you see changes in your skin, visit a dermatologist for an examination, however leprosy in 2022 is considered rare and easily treatable.
