The Knuckleduster Epidemic

Recommended Posts

From an entirely IC perspective, any country that had an epidemic of a particular potentially deadly weapon (except guns in the US because of the gun right debate) that people are carrying in great numbers because everyone else carries them to the point that even regular folk have them in their pocket would be cracking down on them. If dusters have become the standard in brawls, then basically anyone who doesn't have dusters can't engage with a regular fist fight and hope to defend themselves, meaning the obvious: a fistfight with one of the participants using dusters isn't a fistfight.

Los Santos at this point is England and knives.

Classifying dusters as deadly weapons will  only lead to more deathmatching and way less brawls. Right now dusters are the only melee weapon that can be used for any roleplay purpose connected to fights. You pull any other melee weapon and you will get shot dead. Removing the dusters from the "allowed" to use melee weapons in order not to get shot and killed, will only worsen the situation we're finding ourselves in.

Further more, as it has already been suggested in the IFM discord, a simple nerf of the dusters could be the solution to that problem you call "Pandemic". Instead of doing 20 dmg as they do now, 15 dmg would be way better, as it's closer to what you deal with just fists.

I can't support this suggestion as it will eliminate even further the purpose of melee weapons. Either classify all melee weapons in Blunt and Knives. Making Knives - deadly and the blunt not. That way, you now have your "Counter" to the so powerful knuckle dusters. And you do not get shot, for taking a bat, a hammer or dusters to an already melee weapon fight.

This will just make the problem worse by making regular everyday items free to use as melee weapons. At that point you might as well disable fists since the only people throwing them are going to be people misclicking at the club.

The fact that the only thing stopping people from fighting each other with the other melee weapons is that it allows for escalation to guns to happen already says enough about the attitude people are bringing to those brawls anyway.

Fogry hit the nail on the head with this one. If you allow people to draw guns during a brawl just because someone slips on a pair of brass knuckles, you're just encouraging shootings over fights. There should be context for every use of these knuckles—if someone roleplays running at you with them on (outside of a brawl), they should be treated differently. Yes, dusters can be deadly, but the same can be said for virtually any blunt melee weapon on the server. It’s a slippery slope that could lead to the extinction of melee weapons from brawls entirely.

as it stands you CANNOT defend yourself with a firearm if someone's coming at you with a pair of full metal knuckles with intent to crack your skull open, you risk a ban for DM by retaliating as such.

This sounds really stupid, where in the rules does it say that?

I don't see a problem. Duster conflict leads to less dm, since it just knocks people out script wise and doesn't kill them right off the bat like a gunshot to the head. Isn't it a good thing that people are actually using blunt melee weapons in fights that don't always necessarily lead to instant murdering on sight with a gun? It's also another item besides lockpicks or blades that keeps the chop shop / pawn store economy alive.

Don't fix what ain't broken imo. You classify it as a deadly weapon and the entire gameplay purpose of the item will be rendered meaningless. So what if people are disadvantaged in fights? Buy a duster yourself lmao or don't get caught lacking without your homies to back you up. Or maybe don't get into a fight in the first place.

Just get your own pair of dusters, if anything. You're asking for something that will definitely cause more shootouts if decreed. Fists are deadly weapons too: one strong punch can kill someone, so can hitting their head on the ground.

I believe this should be handled IC as a bill to outlaw the carrying/use of knuckle dusters (if not already enacted). This is definitely something that doesn't require admin intervention.

They don't need a nerf or any adjustment, and it could be interesting lobbying for this change with politicians in-character.
