Trump Poised to Challenge Pennsylvania Election Results

Written by Maxine Parker 03/11/2024

As the U.S. presidential election nears, former President Donald Trump is already casting doubt on its legitimacy, especially in Pennsylvania. Trump, the Republican candidate, has repeatedly claimed that if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris wins, it would only be through fraud.

Unfounded Allegations of Fraud in Pennsylvania

Trump's persistent claims of voter fraud, particularly targeting Pennsylvania, have sparked concern over potential efforts to dispute election outcomes once more. This echoes his 2020 campaign strategy, during which he unsuccessfully sought to overturn results after the courts dismissed his allegations. Now, as he faces off against Harris, Trump’s rhetoric suggests a repeat of those tactics. He insists that any Democratic victory can only be the result of cheating, a narrative eerily reminiscent of what led to the violent January 6th Capitol attack, when his supporters stormed Congress to disrupt the certification process.

Claims of “Grand-Scale” Cheating

On Truth Social, Trump recently claimed, “Pennsylvania is cheating and getting caught for it at levels rarely seen before,” without providing evidence. He went on to allege that York County accepted thousands of “potentially fraudulent voter registration forms and ballot applications.” Trump also claimed Lancaster County processed 2,600 fake ballots, calling for police intervention.

Swing States Under Scrutiny

The Republican National Committee (RNC), led by Trump's daughter-in-law Lara, has lodged over 130 complaints, largely focusing on swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. These challenges address everything from voter registration and absentee ballots to vote-counting methods. A notable target has been mail-in voting, which has historically favored Democrats.

“Trump Is Creating a Grievance Structure”

Democratic election attorney Marc Elias remarked on X (formerly Twitter), “Trump is using litigation to create a complaint structure that will enable him to claim that he is a victim if it becomes clear that he lost the election.” David Becker, CEO of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, noted that many pre-election Republican lawsuits, largely dismissed, serve to lay a foundation for post-election claims of fraud.

Election officials in Pennsylvania, both Republican and Democratic, have maintained that the election is being managed securely. Politico reported that Trump’s assertions of false ballots aim to mislead voters into believing audits found evidence of fraud.

Democrats Counter with Lawsuits of Their Own

The legal battle is not one-sided; Democrats have also filed numerous suits to uphold voting rights, protect mail-in ballots, and expand voting access. Their efforts include securing more ballot drop boxes and advocating for overseas voters. An extensive network of Democratic lawyers is prepared to handle disputes before and after the election.

Reassurances from Election Officials

Al Schmidt, Pennsylvania’s top election official, assured the public that investigations into alleged voting issues are thorough. “This is a sign that the safeguards built into our voter registration process are working,” Schmidt said. Governor Josh Shapiro also took to X to remind voters of Trump’s repeated attempts to undermine democracy in 2020: “He is now trying to use the same game plan to create chaos, but we will once again have a free, fair, and safe election – and the will of the people will be respected.”

The Precedent of 537 Votes

Derek Muller, electoral law professor at the University of Notre Dame, pointed out that while the number of potentially disputed votes may be small, their impact could be significant in a tight race. Muller referenced the 2000 presidential election, where George W. Bush won over Al Gore by just 537 votes, with the Supreme Court’s controversial intervention sealing the outcome.

Potential Supreme Court Involvement

The Supreme Court could become a crucial player if election disputes escalate. With a conservative majority, three of whom were appointed by Trump, the Court has already shown its influence by ruling in favor of Virginia purging 1,600 alleged non-citizens from voter rolls. If challenges progress, the nation may witness a prolonged legal battle, reminiscent of the contentious 2000 election.

San Andreas’ Political Landscape: A Turning Tide?

The state of San Andreas, historically a Democratic stronghold since 1992, finds itself at a political crossroads. While it has leaned left for decades, a shift toward conservatism has been noticeable since 2020, leaving experts unsure about how the state might vote in the upcoming election. Mayor Hank Preston, a Republican and a prominent figure in Los Santos, has yet to endorse a candidate. Despite his party affiliation, Preston does not publicly sponsor Trump — a stance that reflects a cautious approach seen among moderate Republicans in the region.

This reluctance among GOP leaders to openly back Trump highlights a divide within San Andreas’ Republican base. It mirrors a national conversation within the party, where supporting Trump remains a point of contention, despite a significant portion of the American electorate firmly in his camp.

As election day approaches, voters in San Andreas find themselves at the heart of a pivotal moment, one that could redefine the state's political identity and influence its future role on the national stage.

Diana Jones Endorses Kamala Harris for President

Adding to the political discourse, Diana Jones, the Democratic Caucus leader of the San Andreas State Senate, has officially thrown her support behind Kamala Harris. In a statement to freelance journalist Maxine Parker, Jones expressed her unwavering endorsement:

"As Democratic Caucus leader of the San Andreas State Senate, I am pleased to announce my endorsement of Kamala Harris for President of the United States of America. The stakes couldn't get any higher this November. But the same values and momentum that have brought so much progress and accomplishments during the last four years will only continue when we elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States."

Jones highlighted Harris’s deep connections to San Andreas as the former Attorney General and U.S. Senator, roles that bolster her strong local and national reputation. "Kamala Harris is the former San Andreas Attorney General, former U.S. Senator for the State of San Andreas, and now the Vice President in the White House. It's going to be good for our state and for our priority," Jones added.

The endorsement from the Democratic Caucus underscores the significance of Harris’s candidacy for the state, promising continued progress and alignment with San Andreas' priorities.
