Haven Homes: Building Brighter Tomorrows

Written by Hank Miller, 19/06/2024

This evening, our great city has taken a massive step forward in its commitment to the young people who live in Los Santos.  Natalia Rane, the newly appointed Chief of City Operations, announced the addition of the Child Protective Services Division to Haven Homes following the signing of the State Protection of Children Act into law, back in September 2023.

It seems that Mayor Preston’s commitment to supporting the UN’s 2030 goals for sustainability continues in full force this evening by continuing his administration's focus on the well-being of citizens, with a particular focus on the youth.  A crowd gathered for this long, anticipated announcement and the pride of the project team, headed by Director of the Department of Health and Welfare, Doctor Sade Aliz, was clear for all to see.

What is Haven Homes? At Haven Homes, we find health and awareness programs, affordable housing, and assistance for families in need and veterans. It is a place to determine where a physician or medical facility our loved ones will visit is licensed to serve.  Today, we recognize the Child Protective Services Division housed here out of Haven Homes. We have been working to ensure that every youth has a chance, regardless of their paths in life. Through this program, we work hard to show youth that gangs and homelessness are not the only paths. We take abandoned, orphaned, or homeless youth, and offer safe housing, food, clothing, educational support, health services, emotional support, activities, and events.

Speaking to Doctor Aliz, she confirmed that the building could house an initial forty young people, with room for expansion if necessary.  Both the doctor and her team were at pains to add that they wanted all young people in need to have a space at Haven Homes.

Currently, our Child Protective Services division is housed out of this building. We have capacity for forty beds, but room to grow.

And to add on to what Director Aliz said - with our department now growing exponentially, we hope to be able to max it out, allowing as many young people to have a place as possible.

Following the announcement, I was given a tour of the magnificent site.   I was shown around the onsite café, to be used by both residents and staff from the department alike.  What really struck me upon entering the café is how the decor reflected an air of calmness, stability but also a subtle coziness and warmth.  Something that the young people will no doubt value, considering the alternative outside of Haven Homes.  The dorms between male and female residents are separated with access being granted to the female's living space and an unoccupied bedroom.  Safe to say, every room was equally impressive as the last, tastefully decorated and a mixture of fun vibes and practical good sense.

During the tour I also managed to gain access to the computer lab, which provides not only fun and entertainment, but also young people are offered tutoring to assist them in gaining valuable skills.

Safe to say that Haven Homes is really a special place, and really speaks volumes about the city’s intention to help young people in need.  But, the work doesn’t stop now that this project is over.  Speaking to a source, this is just phase one of a bigger project, with the aim of assisting young people who are on parole in a separate extension to the existing setup with security being provided by both the Department of Corrections and private security company Protech.  This combination of state and private resources being used comes of no suprise and is simply a continuation of Mayor Hank Preston’s methods of combining two sectors to support organisations and businesses.  All in all, this is a positive step forward for the city and the Department of Health and Welfare is on an upward trajectory in the city’s agenda.
