Prisoner Shot in Escape Attempt

On the evening of June 15th, 2024, select inmates of the Bollingbroke State Prison took part in a routine work detail on Route 68, close to the facility. Inmates were assigned to various tasks outside of the main facility, most notably they were pictured with rollers as they maintained the satelite structures under the watchful eye of guards and deputies. Inmates were documented to be controlled and behaved.

A prison work detail is an organized program employed by prisons that involves inmates getting hands on with various tasks, usually manual labor, under the close supervison of guards. The program helps inmates to build various skills, contributing to their rehabilitation during their incarceration. Considered a privilege, misconduct by prisoners during a work detail can see these rights torn from them.

 

In this instance, inmates were escorted just outside of Prison bounds along route 68, where they collected near the Satelite relay station to perform a routine set of maintenance tasks.

 

However, before too long an unidentified prisoner attempted to escape, darting across the field towards the highway in his attempt to evade capture. The inmate was chased across the open land by deputies until shots were fired, utilizing lethal rounds in accordance with policy, and ultimately resulting in injuries for the escapee. Deputies quickly made ground and attended to the inmate to draw the incident to a close.

 

Other correctional officers on scene turned their attention to the remaining inmates, acting quickly to control the situation and secure the remaining prisoners as the work detail abruptly ended. The area was quickly secured, with no further incident noted.

 

 

The inmate in question was transferred to Pillbox Hill Medical Center to be treated, ready for his transfer back to the facility. There is no further update on his condition, the severity of which is unclear.

 

A representative on behalf of SADCR spoke with us briefly to give an overview of the situation, noting that it is difficult to assume this was pre-planned, as the details of the work detail are only shared as they arrive, tackling major security concerns and thwarting pre-planning that may endanger the wellbeing of stationed guards and units on the detail.

As a consequence of the attempted escape, it was confirmed that work rights will be revoked from the inmate, as well as being relocated into RHU after he is medically released to the facility after treatment.
