Lena
What is the Meaning of Haus? Allow us to reintroduce ourselves. After establishing Haus as an institute for businesses and a hub for our employees, Haus has redefined itself as a safe space for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Haus aims to be a welcoming space for individuals from Davis, Vespucci, Vinewood Hills, and beyond, drawing inspiration from its roots in ballroom culture. In ballroom culture, a “Haus” (often spelled “house”) is an organization that serves as a family, support system, and competitive team for its members. Originating in the LGBTQ+ communities, particularly among Black and Latino communities in New York City during the 1980s, ballroom houses provide a sense of belonging and community for individuals who may have been marginalized or ostracized by their families and society. Each Haus is led by a “Mother” or “Father” who guides and supports their “children,” offering mentorship, emotional support, and often a place to stay. Members of a Haus compete together in ballroom events, which feature a range of categories including dance, fashion, and performance art. These competitions, known as balls, are vibrant, celebratory events where creativity and self-expression are highly valued. With this vision in mind, Haus Institute aims to attract models from diverse backgrounds, whether they are beginners or seasoned professionals in the fashion industry, and help them develop into the best models, entertainers, or individuals they can be. Thus, in this context, when Haus refers to its origins in ballroom culture, it signifies creating a supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for individuals from diverse backgrounds, much like the original ballroom houses did. We aim to create a hub for both unconventional and commercial individuals, welcoming everyone. Whether you’re seeking a second chance in the fashion industry or have never had the opportunity due to financial constraints, we invite you to join us. Whatever your background, we hope you’ll find a place with us. To view our available positions, please visit our job opportunities section. The two co-founders of Haus, Mila Bojchenko and Faith Labelle, each bring diverse backgrounds that inspired them to embark on this journey. Their motivations for starting Haus will be detailed in an original blog series titled ‘Haus Visions.’ This series will feature interviews with Haus employees, models, and associates, sharing their stories and perspectives on the #joinourhaus movement, and the origins of their stories prior to stepping into the fashion industry. Introducing Haus Visions ‘Haus Visions’ is a blog dedicated to exploring the diverse stories and backgrounds of Haus Institute. In each post, we interview Haus employees, models, and associates, delving into their unique journeys and experiences. This series exemplifies our commitment to diversity and highlights the importance of giving a voice to those often overlooked in the fashion industry. By supporting queerness and people of color, ‘Haus Visions’ aims to foster an inclusive space where everyone can thrive and be celebrated. Join our primary community hub to receive updates about our monthly interviews featured in ‘Haus Visions.’ Each month, we’ll release a few Haus Visions interviews, showcasing the backgrounds of our employees and bringing their stories to mainstream audiences. In each ‘Haus Visions’ interview, we aim to give fans and newcomers an inside look into the origins and true experiences of our featured individuals. Whether you have juicy questions or simply want to learn more about someone’s background, we welcome all inquiries. We want you to get to know us better! Our first guest will be Mila Bojchenko, one of Haus Institute’s co-founders.
