Sammy
Spoiler “So, I decided to paint again,” I say, answering my psychiatrist’s question—to which, she asks whether anything lately has brought me excitement. This Pride event, although rescheduled, has brought me excitement. The painting, I'll be auctioning off for charity. The LGBT community has done so much for my career, it’s only right. “And, the painting speaks to me,” I speak, yet again. And, in many ways, I resonated with the painting piece more than I’d like to admit, a piece titled ‘Even in Death, I Bloom’. As I begin to contemplate the title of the artwork, my vision begins to blur; a white cast shining in the corner of my eyes, indicative to a reactive state to one of my triggers. It is a reoccurrence, the meeting between my younger self, and my current self—where I experience that brief glimpse into the emotions of my younger self, tied to the experiences of my adult self. Similar triggers to trauma, and trauma responses, it becomes redundant, and at times, unavoidable. You can’t blame others, or yourself. Just be. “Where’s your mind at right now?” asks my psychiatrist. There I am, there again—when I see those glimpses, it is not vivid. Just small colorless fragments of the past. “I don’t know,” I delay as an answer, continuing; “ I try to redirect my thoughts, it is harder on some days. Right now, it’s just one of those hard times.” Being in a dynamic where drugs were prioritized over me, I normalized it. You’re just a child, and you know no different. There’s nothing to brood over, I knew from a young age, to make things easier for myself, I needed to follow instructions—to not question things, to abide by the rules, and in a way? You become another person. The physical abuse, the sexual abuse, the mental abuse—you are expected to suck it down, somewhere bottled up, to accommodate the others around you. After a while, the years of constant flashbacks, and remnants of the past, they show in your appearance. When you age into your face, and begin to see your abusers, your family—what then? I have had selfish thoughts, wondering about how I would feel if my children resembled my biological family, and I have had to make bed with it—if I want to be that safe space, a safe space that I wish that I had as a child, I need to begin to process this trauma. I cannot waste my days away, pretending that I am perfectly fine. I exclaim; “On most nights, it begins with this dream,” and there’s an immediate pause. A brief pause. “I am reliving those things again, and... I have the decision to run, and to leave the trauma behind, I have a chance to protect myself in my dream. I have been given the decision to do something that I never had in real life, a choice.” And so, I narrate; I narrate that dream to my psychiatrist. usually, it begins with a vehicle, a police vehicle—highlighted with my cousin’s blood. The same cousin that I raised since childhood, and I relieve that, again, and again. He once told me, ‘You are more like a mom to me,’ rather than my aunt. In this dream, I am glued in one spot, unable to redirect my thoughts. I am stuck, reliving the incident over, and over again. Despite us being two years apart in age, he felt like a son to me, and I tried running away from mourning him. You see situations like this in the news, and you never expect for it to happen to you, until it does. And, the sexual abuse. I had no words for it, I had no idea at that age if it was wrong or right, I was just a victim. But my gut reaction told me something was wrong. When I finally spoke up against my uncle, my mom defended him, saying that I was a liar—I was only five. It still confuses me—how can you think your child would lie like that? After confiding in a kindergarten teacher, the inevitable happened, my aunt took me in, and they became a real family to me. Thankfully, I never had to see those other people again. Except in my dreams, where I relive these things. Sometimes, I wonder if abusers abuse you to try to make themselves seem memorable. They’re just blips, the dreams—the flashbacks. They happen at random times, sometimes I even still feel like that model that was scouted into the fashion industry at eighteen. I was unprepared with the climate I had been put into, and the casual racism I’d overhear, I was expected to have no reaction because that’s comfortable for other people. "So, yeah, I guess that's what I relive in my dreams," I conclude the narration, unsure how to proceed, or if there's a suitable icebreaker to say in these awkward therapeutic situations. Or if it is the right time to discuss my ex-boyfriend allegedly killing himself recently. We only have eight minutes remaining in the session. “Thanks for today,” I say to my psychiatrist, ignoring the buzzing of my phone notifying me of my dead beat biological dad’s daily messages. Instead, I focus my attention on the notifications about Diversify’s upcoming Pride Month charity event, and upcoming collaborations! You have to laugh at yourself—otherwise, people will do it for you. “Also, before I go? I have been having this incredibly strange dream recently, where I have the voice of Whitney Houston, and I am just singing into this microphone. Now that? I have no explanation for. But I guess if I had the voice of Whitney Houston, you’d never get me to shut up in the first place.” Edited July 28, 2024 by Sammy 8 2 Link to comment
Lena
Diversify Volume Nine Release Ft. Anna Rex & Teaser Diversify has been broadening its scope recently. The newly released volume nine of the magazine serves as a tribute to Anna Rex’s enduring influence. Featuring models in Anna Rex’s designs, this issue aims to elevate her creations to new heights following her retirement, giving the brand a renewed opportunity to shine. Additionally, this edition marks Diversify’s third magazine collaboration of the year, following partnerships with PHMC and Diversify’s sister brand, Vom Moda. In this volume, Diversify’s CEO, Faith Labelle, conducted interviews with Josély Martinez, Anna Rex, and Olivia Zhao, while Isaac Slater interviewed the late Scarlett Kaminska. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Los Santos Insider, as well as Scarlett’s colleagues and loved ones affected by her passing. Upon re-reading the interview, it was deeply moving to hear about the positive impact Scarlett had on Los Santos. Additionally, behind the scenes, Diversify has been developing a sister project in collaboration with its parent company, Haus. While we prefer not to disclose too many details at this time, the project aims to delve into the entertainment industry, giving a larger platform to voices that are often unheard. We are eagerly anticipating the moment when our audience can witness what we have been working on over the past several months. Our hope is to make Scarlett proud. Diversify Your Thinking Presents: Pride Gala On June 29th, Diversify partnered with Free Thinking Publications to host Diversify’s debut Pride Gala. Following the unfortunate cancellation of our Pride Parade, we aimed to make it up to our audience by hosting the event at the Adagio Event Hall located in Rockford. The evening was a resounding success, with auction items raising a total of one million dollars. Diversify added a donation of two hundred thousand dollars, and Diversify’s CEO, Faith Labelle, personally contributed four hundred thousand dollars. In total, the event raised 1.6 million dollars, with the proceeds from the auction benefiting the Los Santos LGBT Center and the Sacred Heart Homeless Shelter. The Los Santos LGBT Center and the Sacred Heart Homeless Shelter each received a donation of eight hundred thousand dollars, thanks to the contributions from Diversify, Faith Labelle, our sponsors Vynty and Adagio, and the generous individuals who purchased auction pieces during the event. During the night, we enjoyed performances by DJ Serene and Böjka, with Böjka premiering her debut single ‘Spinning In Lights’ through Magnolia. The Hyperpop track, reminiscent of Britney Spears’ ‘Lucky,’ explores the cost of fame and Böjka’s experiences with burnout, highlighting the contrast between public perception and her true personal identity. The single will debut publicly through Magnolia, so stay tuned! Additionally, we want to extend our gratitude to everyone who contributed to this wonderful cause. During this Pride Month, we aim to support the LGBT community and those facing challenges, including homelessness. We are incredibly thankful for the platform that allows us to make meaningful strides for our community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the auction, including Ayanna, Jayden, Cassius, and Mila, as well as Vom Moda for providing the exclusive Diversify Vom Moda dress from volume eight of our magazine for auction. We appreciate your support throughout Pride Month, and we look forward to sharing more of our contributions to Los Santos with you soon! Stay blessed. Lena
On July 9th, The Coleman Fund made an exciting announcement: it is rebranding to The Coleman LaBelle Fund. This change is a heartfelt tribute to Faith LaBelle, CEO of Diversify, recognizing her unwavering dedication since the fund's inception. Frederick Coleman, the founder of the fund, shared the inspiring story behind this decision. During his battle with cancer, LaBelle provided immense support, not only helping Coleman personally but also managing multiple businesses and ensuring the fund's continued success. Her remarkable efforts and steadfast commitment had a profound impact on Coleman during his recovery, empowering him to renew his dedication to the fund during his remission. Renaming the fund to The Coleman LaBelle Fund is a testament to Faith LaBelle's contributions. This rebranding celebrates her ‘resilience, optimism and leadership qualities’ she has played in the fund's journey. Moreover, the newly named Coleman LaBelle Fund is seeking Coordinators and other support positions to enhance its operations. Previously overwhelmed by a surge in grant applications, the Coordinator will now assist both Coleman and LaBelle with managing their schedules and responsibilities. If you want to learn more about our available grants or join our team, please visit https://colemanlabelle.fund/ for detailed contact information and grant opportunities. In other news, Caden Levi, COO of Diversify, has recently embarked on a secret project with Vinewood Pictures. Here at Haus Institute, we’ve been granted exclusive behind-the-scenes access, and we’re thrilled to debut several images from this exciting collaboration. While we can’t reveal specific details about the project, the images offer intriguing hints. You might be able to piece together some clues from the Hang Ten rented boats, the camera crew, and the picturesque beach location. Take a look at the photos below and see if you can guess what’s in store! Stay tuned for more updates as we learn more about this mysterious and exciting venture. When we asked Caden Levi about his involvement with the secret project, he responded: “Well, I cannot say much but what I will say is… I have only filmed for one day in total so far. There was probably more drama in that one day than I have ever experienced in the three years I have been back in Los Santos… and that might only be because another contestant attacked the hos- let me stop, actually. I have said too much already!” Titled ‘2.0’ in the teaser image, Adagio Entertainment, in collaboration with Haus Institute, is planning an event on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of August. The event is currently in the planning stages, and we look forward to sharing more details next month. For the latest updates, follow the Adagio Events facebrowser page. This striking piece features a structured ivory bodice that blossoms into a voluminous black skirt, symbolizing the unfurling of evening’s embrace. The gown’s silhouette is reminiscent of a flower in full bloom, with its fitted upper half giving way to a generously pleated lower portion. The stark contrast between the light top and dark bottom represents the delicate balance between light and shadow in nature’s daily cycle. Perfect for grand evening affairs, this gown captures the essence of dusk in haute couture form.” “Structured silk duchesse satin, providing structure and a lustrous finish on the bodice. Combination of silk organza and tulle for volume, with an outer layer of silk georgette for the flowing, pleated effect of the skirt. The ruffled detail between the bodice and skirt is made of silk organza.” If you’re interested in purchasing from our collection, you can shop online on our webstore or visit us in-store.
