Vehicle impounded for not paying taxes

Another thing that wasn't considered at all by this suggestion is how used car dealerships operate. Cars that aren't being driven off the lot that are taking time to sell would end up being an immediate loss within a week considering how low the profits are for used vehicles.

Not only the dealerships, but rental companies, too! A huge oversight. Must think harder next time.

As I said. It is IC but has to be enforced OOCly due to the fact we're all fictional characters who simply dissapear.

And that's the entire point. An economy that is more realistic. You can't have bartenders and such drive 400k cars like it's normal, yet have 2k in the bank. This is a roleplay server that orients itself off of realism. Heavy roleplay aswell, this is not GTA Online with /me and /do added.

And a much better alternative has already been brought up. Bump up the registration and insurance costs, make people think twice, maybe thrice, before they buy an expensive car because frankly, having a recurring, weekly fee to sustain your vehicle's legality makes little to no sense.

Easy way to go around people buying second-hand cars and not having to pay said fees is to add an administration fee for transferring an insurance policy, which the buyer would have to pay to keep said insurance policy. The fees would obviously vary according to different vehicle specifications.

The issue here is that something like road tax shouldn't exist and have no place in a server that presents itself as a "heavy" roleplay server. Adding even more elements of this sort further weaken the term "heavy". At the very least, keep it as it is.

The implementation of Road Tax seems more of an attempt at fixing the existing problem of sports cars and whatnot - I don't believe it's a good system by any means whatsoever; Speaking as someone who has to enforce those laws. I personally don't like the idea of making it automated much like many others in this thread, however I would very much agree with reworking it into a system that makes more sense in a United States setting. The concept of Road Tax is a very European concept and doesn't really have a place on a US-based roleplay server. I'd +1 the idea of Insurance and Vehicle registration fees and harsher punishments for evasion of paying those - The main issue isn't that people don't pay their tax, It's that people would rather get fines and pay those instead of paying their road tax, as the fines are cheaper than the road tax itself.

This. So much this. The solution is simple. Scrap the road tax, replace it with vehicle registration and insurance fees and make tags expire with people having to renew them like you do IRL. That way you're also solving the issue of people owning stupid cars that they realistically shouldn't. The road tax shouldn't even have to enforce people owning stupid unrealistic cars. That is solved by admins, and if you see anyone driving a car they shouldn't, forward a report to Ethanol for roleplay quality or get in contact with an admin. (This system works, try it.)

Just make the road tax status show up, whenever a vehicle plate is scanned in the police database as the first thing. So it will always be checked on the main screen.

And then make the fines 2x road taxes for that specific vehicle. Or more, even.

Paying road taxes is a good system, I think. However if the cops are not checking it every time. Make it mandatory by changing the database layout while scanning a vehicle.

I think Road Tax should stay. If calling it "Road Tax" is so immersion breaking that people simply can not role-play, then rename it to something else such as Makey Car Pricey Tax like we call it in the UK.

From what I've read in this thread, there seems to be a problem with enforcing the tax, with players not paying it because nobody checks. If that is true, then the blame lies solely with the LSPD and that needs to be addressed. I hope it isn't true because that I thought the GTA:W police were better than that.

Maybe also introduce a Strike system as well. Strike 1: Warning ("Go and pay right now"); Strike 2: Fine; Strike 3: Seize the vehicle. Crush it, or maybe even auction it at a weekly/monthly IC event.

Players who have 2 strikes are sure as shit gonna pay the road tax if it means they run the risk of losing their car.

That's what they do if I'm right. I've been pulled over without my tax being paid once. The officer was civil through it, escorted me to the DMV to pay the tax, and so I did. Any strike after that will most likely be a fine since the second time wouldn't be the first time, then they have no reason to issue a warning as it's a problem. If you get away with it once what stops you from doing it again? Thus one warning on the offense. Not one warning after each time you have to pay tax.

Seizing the vehicle though, not realistic. What can happen is fines that are larger after each one including the fact that it stacks up. Fines can actually be followed up on and said person can actually get arrested for not paying the fines.
