  4. It seems you kinda missed the point. This type of gym isn't meant to draw an audience, that's what the script fights are for. Dice combat isn't necessarily fun to spectate, and an idea that's strictly roleplay like the one I made this thread about is solely for the enjoyment of the parties directly involved. The gym would obviously have an established system that defines the progression and thus the winner of each match. I'm obviously not expecting anyone outside of said gym to adopt the system. And I know that attempts at a dice combat system have been made before; in fact I helped make the (to my knowledge) first such system which was used at Vespucci Sports when there was no MMA scene on GTAW. The system failed because A. it was boring to spectate and B. most people involved weren't familiar with the sport OOC to the level where they could efficiently RP using said system, nor was there anyone willing to invest the time to teach them. The system would obviously need experimentation at first, and there'd be minor changes afterwards but I think a solid, lasting framework shouldn't be too hard to come up with. It'd be simplified, too, as BJJ is a complex sport with hundreds of techniques irl. Either way if you read the thread and replies on it you could've already made out everything I wrote here. I'm not planning on creating a new server-wide system for everyone to use, just a little "minigame" for people within the gym to enjoy, all while educating themselves on this great martial art.
  5. This was the idea! So far I haven't dove deeper than the very surface level or actually seen any effort for it since just gauging for interest now, but it'd likely be a system based off d20 and attributes for different skills in jiu jitsu. Some of these could be takedowns, bottom control/sweeps/scrambles, top control, transitions, chokes, joint/ligament submissions, other submissions for example... Or the previous slimmed down to fewer categories, you get the point either way. Rolling would then be played out using the previously mentioned d20 rolls against one another through a system of game progression. The difficulty in this would be making it engaging enough for the people who know their shit, while also making it simple enough for the beginners to play. This is sadly the state of MMA roleplay on GTAW according to my experience too. My goal with this BJJ gym would be to provide a hub for people who wanna rp around a more realistic martial arts environment. I get the appeal of the GTAW MMA scene to a wider more casual audience, but as a keen fan and ex practicioner OOC it's just not for me, at least in it's current state. The system set in place would obviously only work within the gym as long as the standard for fighting on the server is /me swings and then spam clicking until one party is downed. I was also thinking of a belt progression system within the gym, that people could then incorporate in their RP outside of it as well. Probably a mixture of activity and knowledge over the sport and techniques.
  6. I've been thinking about starting a BJJ gym, but I'm unsure if it would interest people or keep them engaged to stick around to the degree where the concept wouldn't die down. Couple key points below: -Strictly roleplay, 0 script fighting. -Roll, attribute and belt systems to allow and keep track of progression, as well as to guide the roleplay when rolling (sport specific term for "sparring"). -Emphasis on jiu jitsu gym culture and the social aspects of it. I wouldn't want the gym to strictly exist for training, but also the social aspects of the sport. A lot of BJJ gyms are tight knit communities with people from all walks of life, many of whom develop genuine, long lasting friendships with each other. I'm yet to see a martial arts gym or gym in general on GTAW that would really focus on such. Some of the issues that make me hesitant to go forward with the idea: -Steep learning curve in the beginning. Obviously I would need to introduce other players to the sport, some techniques and relevant terminology for them to be able to roleplay around it effectively. In turn, this would naturally make some people steer clear from it as a whole, or lose interest quickly. It might be incredibly difficult to find people who wanna stick along unless they have OOC experience. -Engagement. This kinda piggybacks off the previous point. With the potential lack of people, it's hard to determine whether the existing people find the roleplay engaging enough to stick around or not. I think the idea could be a lot of fun with the right amount of people, but only having 2 or 3 active members likely wouldn't cut it. These are the reasons I'm making this thread, to gauge whether there's interest or not, so please vote above! I'd want to make it feel as welcoming as possible for people new to BJJ or martial arts in general through IC and OOC guidance so that anyone wanting to give it a shot could do so without hesitating. Any questions or ideas, drop them below.
