While conducting perimeter patrol, a Correctional Officer observed a reckless driver on the road that connects the Los Santos County State Prison with Route 68. The officer was transported to Pillbox Hill Medical Center for treatment. 2. Beyond the Badge, Dog News Meet one of the women-led SADCR K-9 teams OCTOBER 10, 2023 Veronica Delarosa and her K-9 Goose K-9 teams are assets to institutions, partner agencies Inside SADCR recently caught up with one of SADCR's two women-led K-9 teams. Highly trained and endlessly valuable, our men and women and their K-9 partners are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of an institution through contraband interdiction efforts. K-9 teams are highly effective in sniffing out contraband that can’t be easily detected by the human eye. Each K-9 team, consisting of a carefully selected officer and dog, goes through seven weeks of intensive training in the Department’s academy. They report directly to the Investigative Services Unit (ISU) within the institution as well as provide mutual aid to other institutions and outside agencies. Veronica Delarosa and K-9 partner Goose Veronica and her K-9, Goose, have been partners for just over two years. Together, they play a key role in keeping contraband like controlled substances and cell phones out of Los Santos County State Prison. Veronica's career with SADCR began in 2018, where she has worked as an officer with the riot squad in Las Vegas. Eventually, she applied for the canine academy in 2019. Goose is always eager to hop in the car and head to work. "Goose loves his job. We have a relationship where all he wants to do is please, so he looks forward to getting to work and accomplishing his mission," said Veronica. Veronica was recently promoted to Acting Sergeant of Investigative Services Unit (ISU), K-9 and she expects to complete the sergeant training soon, of course with the help of Goose. When not working, Goose and Veronica love to play and go on runs in Mirror Park. Goose's favorite part of the day is his lunch! 9. BY SCU STAFF / AUGUST 31, 2022 GARY HEWITT ELECTED AS SHERIFF LOS SANTOS COUNTY After spending over three decades with the Los Santos County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Gary Hewitt returns to the largest Sheriff’s Department in the country as the 34th elected Sheriff. Distinguishing himself as a straight shooter who speaks truth to power, Sheriff Hewitt returns an advocate not only for the hard-working men and women who wear tan and green, but for all residents of Los Santos County. After graduating from Academy class 177 in 1994, Sheriff Hewitt served as a custody deputy at Men’s Central Jail, and North County Correctional Facility. He worked patrol at Los Santos Davis Station and was a Supervising line deputy before promoting to sergeant. As a sergeant, Hewitt served as both a watch and a field sergeant, and as the operations sergeant. He also supervised the Emergency Response Team and the Operations Safe Jails. In 2008, Hewitt promoted to lieutenant and got assigned as a watch commander, overseeing security operations in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. Hewitt's first assignment as a Division Chief meant returning to TTCF, where he oversaw security and operations for the facility’s General Population. Throughout his career, Hewitt has been assigned to several special response and incident management teams. He has volunteered with schools and mentoring programs, and has worked with the Department’s youth Explorer program. “My goals are simple. I will lead from the front, and not from the rear. I want to recruit deputies from the same communities we serve,” said Sheriff Hewitt. Prior to his election as Sheriff, Gary Hewitt served multiple years in the Association of Los Santos Deputy Sheriffs as a Board Member in order to ensure that the rights of future Deputy Sheriffs would be protected. “A child that grows up in Davis, I want him to be a deputy in the city of Davis. Same for Paleto Bay. That way you have inclusive representation within the department. That’s how we base community policing on a solid base,” he added.
