Inside Executive Security
Emilia Russo

Former Executive Security officer now Director of IRONGATE Security Solutions shares future plans and his insight into the uncertain state of the security sector.

Over 10,000 miles away from Johanessburg, Adriaan Pretoria toured the West Coast with his siblings Veerle De Vries and Mathias Vorseter,  all in search of a new home. Their native Afrikaans now exchanged for our own local flavor of English. With both of us in casual garb ideal for a beach-side rendezvous we met on a balmy Saturday afternoon on the fringe of Chumash. Minutes into our introductory small talk it became clear Adriaan was a man harboring senitments over the "bittersweet memory" of his home, a "beautiful and Godless place" where the "horrors contrast beautifully with the nature". He mused that even with the societal conflict, at least the ocean connects him to his home and the people there will share the same view he looks out at.

Eventually settling into Los Santos Adriaan claimed a position in Holly Ambrose's Executive Security firm in January. At some point he was given the role of a Senior Security Officer, seeing himself responsible for managing probationary officers and help shepherd their staff around to the venues they were once responsible for. Adriaan believed Executive Security flourished by committing to its ethos of "not being the biggest, but the best". By his account ES surpassed their largest rival, Gruppe Six, all as part of the "American dream of business".

However managerial issues saw the company collapse, leaving "at least thirty people" without a job and "above 15" establishments were left without security. In this subsequent "job sinkhole" Adriaan laments how the company endured various scandals only to see itself spread too thin. The exact details are unknown to him, but he describes it as unfortunate since Holly Ambrose is "one of Los Santos' finest businesswomen with a heart of steel, Executive Security was her child, and it died in her arms". Holly was a key figure in Adriaan's life, introducing him to the family-like bond of its staff. He saw her as "not only a leader, but a close friend" and adds "she's kind, down to earth and is a professional whiskey drinker". Once Executive folded their prior contracts were all open to the competing firms, including Gruppe Six. From his personal experience Adriaan views them as lacking competency among their ranks, yet acknowledges they have the opportunity to step up and take the reigns as the state's leading firm, if they are not "knee-capped by the arising firms". With Gruppe Six's public legal controversies their task becomes an uphill battle against public opinion.

Looking forward Adriaan aims take the helm of the splintered sector with IRONGATE Solutions. He fears that the quality of protective services will plummet drastically, meaning unified security will be absent. With this comes "interior security" where "people will slap on a Guard Card and call themselves a guard for the evening" and regards to conduct that "all it takes is a security guard to think he's a peace officer, when in reality he's not". Together with his business partner and IRONGATE Chief Marketing Officer Alyx Rodriguez they have succeed in landing contracts with the prestigious Diamond Casino, The Vault nightclub and The Crypt alternative club within two days of founding their business. At the time of our interview Adriaan shared that their initial idea of "simply dominating the entirerity of the sector in a full blitzkrieg fashion" gave way to "staying suited to the higher end of town, be known as not the biggest but the best security firm, one that people can trust in".

Lastly, the man who took a humble reaction to a compliment of his polite demeanour imparted upon me that he tries hard to remain personable in a city that does its best to drain a person of their redeemable qualities, also adding that "I question myself, but don't we all? That's the only way to know if we're still fully there."
