The Protests Continue

Elizabeth Rankin

The protests against police brutality in South Central Los Santos continue on for another day, as shots continue to ring out of Davis.

Shots fired, civilians down, orders barked, chaos ensued. A calm evening for peaceful protests and paying respect to their dead was defeated by the Los Santos County Sheriffs Department, who gradually escalated the situation until a response arrived from the Los Santos Police Department to take control of the situation. What was initially a calm situation under careful control once again hit boiling point as beanbag rounds were fired into the crowd, with a round almost hitting clearly-marked journalists attending the scene.

The desires from organisers to hold a peaceful protest went unheard - as sheriffs from the department ordered people to leave the vicinity, attacking those that didn't with beanbag rounds and batons, and blocking the view of injured civilians from our cameras with their bodies. The protesters attempted to show reason many times, with several protesters allowing fire department personnel to travel in and out of the restricted areas, a courtesy not shown by the Sheriffs Department. LSNN was unable to report further past this point due to our news van and camera being attacked in the tension.

Earlier today, and contrary to the events witnessed by LSNN tonight, the Los Santos County Sheriffs Department released the following statement.

Quote

To the citizens of the county of Los Santos,

My office has taken immediate, swift action to place several deputies who were present on-scene under leave until we can get a clearer picture of the situation. The Sheriff's Department remains committed to a tolerant, diverse community and I will anyone who violates their oath to those values accountable. To ensure the public's trust is maintained, I have asked my Internal Affairs Bureau to report the ultimate findings of their investigation to our public information desk as soon as it is available.

I ask for calm while we fully investigate this situation. If there are any witnesses, please approach us to assist with the investigation.

Regards,

Sheriff Machado

Despite this statement, it appeared that the issues mentioned in the Sheriffs statement were institutionalised in the department, with several displays of unjustifiable police brutality occurring once again. LSNN received several anonymous tips that the initial protests yesterday erupted after an altercation in which a Deputy Sheriff referred to a member of the community with the 'N-word'. Prompting the start of the riots, however, this is still unconfirmed at this time.

Comment regarding city-wide unrest - 5th of July 2020

On July 4th 2020 at approximately 21:30, Officers of the Los Santos Police Department responded to civil unrest on Covenant Avenue in Davis, to assist Deputies of the Los Santos Sheriff's Department. As Officers arrived on the scene, they faced about 30 to 40, partially violent, protestors. The situation evolved and it was decided for units to pull out of the area. During this, one Vapid Scout Police Utility Vehicle was left behind and set on fire, after Officers attempted to secure the vehicle.

After this attempt, Officers fell back towards the Davis Mega Mall, followed by the crowd. Officers set up with riot gear, holding their ground as vehicles were almost charging at them, as well as protestors acting aggressively towards Officers. During this engagement, multiple Officers and protestors were injured, however non-critical or requiring medical attention. The protesting group moved on along Davis Avenue, according to chants towards Mission Row Station where Officers prepared.

Whilst moving into that direction, a part of the group broke off and set fire to the local Fire Station 3 of the Los Santos Fire Department on Macdonald Street in Davis. Deputies of the Sheriff's Department were the first to engage the group of still well over thirty people, having to retreat from one of their Vapid Victor Police Interceptors and leaving it to the group, who set this vehicle on fire.

Units of both the Los Santos Police Department, supported by the Los Santos Sheriff's Department, secured a perimeter around the Fire Station, opening up a path for the Fire Department to bring in firefighters to save their own station.

As this was happening, Officers of the Los Santos Police Department's Metropolitan Division worked in tandem with patrol, to disperse the violent crowd that has caused massive damage to the public. Eventually, the crowd was dispersed and a few arrests were made.

During the scene on the corner of Davis Avenue and Macdonald Street, one Officer-involved-shooting occurred. A male on a black Manchez dirtbike, beached the Police perimeter and charged his vehicle at for deputies and a firefighter, striking two of the deputies and the firefighter. As the male was attempting to go for another target, Officers engaged the man, who was later pronounced dead on the scene.

During this scene, one man was shot by Police. Multiple civilian bystanders, as well as protestors, were injured, along with Officers, Deputies, and Firefighters. One Police cruiser and a Sheriff's cruiser were destroyed, along with damages to countless cars, buildings, and not least the Fire Department's Station 3.

The Los Santos Police Department remains committed to protecting the First Amendment rights of all of our citizens. Our community must be able to voice their concerns over systemic injustices. Whilst the majority does this in a peaceful manner, we have seen and witnessed an increasing level of violence, on both sides of the argument.

This violence has involved dangerous objects being thrown at civil servants, properties, and businesses, as well as criminal threats being uttered between both protestors and counter-protestors. This type of dangerous behavior will not be tolerated by the Los Santos Police Department and we will take enforcement action on anyone who endangers peaceful protestors, police officers or the general public.

This Department will continue to facilitate spontaneous and planned protests. We stand with the community and do not accept any instances of police brutality, acts of violence or property damage.

"A key point that I want to make is that we will always focus on de-escalation first and foremost. We are all firm believers in the right to free speech, and we are here just as much as everyone else to defend that right, as Americans. So long as protests stay peaceful, the LSPD stands to guarantee that right." - Chief of Police Charles Hughes.

Lieutenant II Armando Rosario
Assistant Commanding Officer
Media Relations and Community Affairs Division

Comment: Who do these liberal idiots in LSNN think they are by just blaming the whole incident on one law enforcement agency and acting like the other one came to save the day? Why don't you people do some more research into what actually causes the escalation of a situation instead of blatantly blaming something on law enforcement to generate clicks? Your 'news' is just causing people to get more aggravated and there is going to be blood on your little Social Justice Warrior claws when it causes even more civil unrest.
