LSNN: Is White Nationalism a problem in Los Santos?

Let's look at the legal side of free speech

Neo Nazis, White Supremacists or even White Nationalists as they go by often have always had a foothold in Los Santos, especially around Vespucci and the things that they do is in fact legal, but the recent violence in Vespucci Canals is nothing but driven by hatred of majority black ethnic communities. So what exactly is the problem here you may think? The racism, hate, violence? We think it's a combination of all three. While they can lawfully express their opinions, its when violence gets involved it becomes unlawful.

 

A lot of people think that White Supremacists shouldn't belong in Los Santos, that's a point we disagree on, they, as everyone have the First Amendment right to publicly express racist, offensive or even very unpopular views, but that's the fun part of the First Amendment. This has been ruled multiple times by the Supreme Court that laws attempting to criminalize hate speech violates the First Amendment. Due to this, multiple landmark rulings have typically covered as long as there's no imminent lawless disorder.  With this, the things they do and say, generally falls under the First Amendment right, as long as it does not call for imminent lawless disorder (Brandenburg v. Ohio)

A discussion with the locals of Vespucci. 

We reached out to a prominent local Malikai Vance about the recent violence in Vespucci and we sat down with him for a chat.

 

Vance came from Vice City and flew out to Los Santos to flip the community with nothing but love, he envisioned a community together with his hosted Beach Parties but had ran into numerous problems with the recent White Nationalists with strong violence towards their ethnic group. He goes on to say they brought weapons ranging from firearms, bats, hammers, whatever they had their hands on. Vance continued to say that they was being discriminated against for being black and was often called 'niggers' by the White Nationalists. 

 

The Los Santos Police made 5 arrests that day, including Vance for undisclosed crimes

 

Vance and his associates still face racial abuse by the White Nationalists and some of them even are too scared to work at their day jobs, fearing violence or even death. They go on to accuse the LSPD of not doing enough to keep themselves safe nor ever did the Los Santos Police ever contact Vance after the violent incident. 

 

With closing remarks Vance stated that he's concerned to even live in Vespucci due to his skin color and they still fear active violence against them. The two individuals with Vance declined to be identified. 

 

Personal Remarks

While I have yet to see the problems or violence from the Nationalists, I'm at a loss on what to think, Yes, the universal opinion is "nazi bad, you like nazi, your a nazi" but the problem I see is two fold, sure, we wont always get along but the fact of the matter is this. People can share their own views as they want, as it's enshrined within the First Amendment, it has been battled repeatedly in the Supreme Court and it has ALWAYS been ruled in the First Amendment. So regardless of opinions, sure they're not nice things, but we can't stop them from saying such things. It's the rule of law, end of. But is it a problem? Kind of, yes? It's your opinion. It's not a law.

The Los Santos Police was contacted for comments and a spokesperson provided this statement.

The Los Santos Police Department is dedicated to protecting and serving the citizens of Los Santos in every regard. Hate crimes, and other ethnically targeted violence is taken extremely seriously by the department as a whole. Every threat, or report we receive on the subject is fully investigated and the appropriate LSPD assets are placed to avoid violence, or prevent it from escalating further.

While we rely heavily on the community to report these crimes before they happen to coordinate a proper preventative response, we do realize that there will be occasions where prevention will not be an option. Officers are highly encouraged to patrol these higher risk areas through their day to day patrols, and will be specifically sent to areas to increase officer presence should the need arise. We are currently concluding another wave of Police Academies, and Officers from the last are completing their field training phases. This will no doubt help us increase our officer presence throughout the city. The Los Santos Police Department is constantly striving to put more Officers onto the streets to help passively prevent criminal activity and respond to emergency calls.

Individuals engaging in hate crimes are documented and investigated, with Area Detectives actively liaising with the wider department to ensure these individuals are identified, and that there is immediate enforcement and action against crimes of this nature. When appropriate we will release full statistics, so long as they do not compromise active or on-going situations.

In regards to the increase in gun related incidents, as with everything else the Los Santos Police Department is dedicated to doing anything possible to help reduce the amount of illegal firearms or other criminal contraband from the streets. Areas that dramatically increase in hubs for this kind of activity are always flagged and appropriate Divisions are notified to help find the source of said increase. The Area Detective Division monitors gun crime by developing a comprehensive contraband offender database. Those individuals found in possession of unlicensed or prohibited firearms are documented, and thoroughly investigated to reduce any further criminal activity.

As always we urge any member of the public that witnesses criminal activity, regarding hate crimes or anything else, to report it to our Department. The Los Santos Police Department strives to make the city as safe as possible for every citizen regardless of race, background, or gender.
