AURA

By Alexa Duet

If there was ever a nightclub that got worse feedback than my reviews, it's AURA.

You may be thinking - 'this Alexa chick is just incredibly critical of every venue she goes to, how do we know she's not just being dramatic, once again?' Oh boy, this is generous. AURA is quite a perfect crash-course in how to NOT run a business - if I've given your venue a low score, I'm sorry, you deserve higher to bump up the distance between yourselves and AURA.

Let's start with something simple - location! The best thing about AURA is that it is so close to an airport, meaning you can get on a plane and get as far away from the club as possible with exceptional ease. The building isn't soundproofed, meaning you get to hear jet engines roar overhead as you dance through the night. Think about the location though - is a nightclub the best use of space in that location? What about a cocktail bar for pilots, or a place where you can have a quiet drink and watch the planes fall in the sunset sky? Not only is the location absurd for a nightclub, but it could also have the potential to be much better. Though, if the management run anything else like they run this nightclub, I don't hold out much hope.

So what went wrong at AURA?

There comes a certain point where it's clear that the effort isn't there anymore, there is no care in the venue or how it presents itself, where it is a short-term money grab. AURA describes that perfectly. The DJ, who I was also told was the owner, made frequent trips around the venue to top up her drink, go for a walk or talk to her friends at the bar. Meanwhile, she made no effort to get people to the dancefloor or stop to see how they were doing. The music inside the venue was obviously on a radio stream, as the stream changed three times midway through songs to vastly different genres, not like that mattered too much anyway, it wasn't like anyone was dancing or even enjoying themselves. Rather than hiring someone who knew what they were doing, the owner cheaped out and let the internet do it for her, which sums up the entire experience - Cheaped. Out.

There was the sole bartender on shift and my sympathy does go out to her, it was clear that she had been given minimal training and was under a lot of pressure to get through the line wanting drinks, while she was a little on the slow side, I don't blame her for it as you could see she was trying with the resources and training that she had, in a field of negatives, the one positive came from the personality the bartender showed in spite of the pressure and stress she was under. Bartender, if you're reading this, please find someone better to work for. While the building itself is actually pretty nicely designed, the club does literally everything else wrong.

The controversy of last week was looming over my mind as I looked around an almost empty dance floor. For an owner who spends all of her time in customer-facing jobs, being a card dealer at a casino, a DJ and a bartender, working in venues other than her own, including both La Puerta Casino and Club Royale, her knowledge of the industry is almost non-existent and completely focused around making herself more money. For those not in the know - the controversy - in which the owner continued to advertise her club and stay open for business as a girl was dying in her car park, and then proceeded to attack critics on FaceBrowser with what many believed to be outright lies, proved to go down poorly with the residents of Los Santos. More about the controversy can be found on this summary here.

Oh, and there were no toilets. Really, really, really poor.

Note from the author: Thanks to the people that read my blog - I've become aware that some people are not happy with a former review I have conducted and I will look into arranging an alternative review. For a bit about my methodology - I award stars for effort, business strategy and service, among other factors, these stars begin at zero and are awarded for the positives. I'm a very very harsh critique, yes, but that's because I believe we can do better. A low score doesn't necessarily mean a venue isn't bad, but that more could be done, as always, opinions are subjective and what could be a five-star review one night means that a venue could have a bad night that gives it a two-star, I'm always happy to look into my own methodology and conduct new reviews if I see that I'm in the wrong. Feel free to contact me if so. Thanks for your support.

Comment: Funny how this review is so similar to saints news back in the day. Ah, what's new? Thank you for your feedback regardless. Merry Christmas. Also I've never worked anywhere besides the casino, which is more like a hobbie, should get your facts straight before writing.

Comment: Quality is something that Ashley Hendricks has shown no concern for. It's a cash-grab. Plain and simple. Pay an inflated entry fee for nothing special whatsoever, then enjoy an understaffed bar, bad music, and genuinely incompetent management. The arrogance and blatant disregard Hendricks shows to her patrons by overcharging so egregiously is sickening in and of itself.

AURA is the equivalent of dangling keys in front of a baby to occupy their attention for a few moments, but even the baby will be distracted by something better quite quickly in this situation. AURA is fizzling out, and the city is better off for it.
