FACEBROWSER: 1 MONTH LATER!

Published: 23rd of April, 2019.

Facebrowser debuted its new domain just over a month ago, so with Los Santos’ primary social media outlet pushing through a change, what did its user think?  The divisive media company had drawn criticism throughout 2018 for its absence of moderation, the apparent abandonment of the site from its previous public representatives and lack of development.

Shortly after launch the official Facebrowser account greeted its thousands of users; promising progress for the future and an open path of communication with its users. “Your input is essential to help make this a great site for the social community. Suggestions to improve your experience are always welcome. Simply drops us a message!” At the time the site had “over 1,000 registered users, 8,000 total posts, 5,000 comments, 100 pages and 100,000 messages” according to an official statement.

The reception has been mixed. The site had drawn the sarcastic ire of its members due to a supposed bug where users reported losing a vast amount of friends in the span of a few hours. Facebrowser is also known to compress uploaded images, leading to a loss in quality that users have complained frequently of. In an official public statement, Facebrowser claims “Facebrowser sees a lot of data daily and images can take up a lot of space. To minimize the load on our servers we have had to set this for all images uploaded to prevent any potential disruption to your experience in the future.” This may be a common technique known as web optimization, where the processing load on a web serer is minimized to cut costs and ensure stability.

In a move that was likely to test the site's user moderation, Shira Otraskawa posted successive provocative sexual images with the apparent intent to draw attention to themselves only days after the new site’s inception. Otraskawa resurfaced days later with their public post of "Promise I'll be nice this time. hello".

A plucky string of users have also taken it upon themselves to embellish the site with pages dedicated to the admiration of dogs, cats and marijuana. Just a Doggo and Just a Cat are pet-centric pages hosted by anonymous users. Marijuana Fanatics joins Forum for Democracy and Blaine County as the site’s most popular groups with over 50 members each.

Elsewhere the controversial gossip page Drama Queen continues to host its Spill the Tea service via the website. The page has its fair share of constant detractors who deride the anonymous nature as endorsing a spiteful, unfounded whirlpool of gossip to defame others without cause. Others advocate its use of an outlet to air potentially beneficial revelations to the public at large, going hand in hand with the personal accountability such an outlet can provide.

Accountability the LSPD have tapped into for their law enforcement. Bjorn “Tig” Balgruuf’s online pictures of himself over a sprawled out body and another of him wielding high-calibre weaponry on private property, which caught the attention of an officer. Bjorn was at a friend’s home in Paleto Bay when it was raided a few days later, charged for the implied fight in the first noted picture and his assets were seized. Balgruuf’s statement when asked was that the pictures were justified; nobody had pressed charges at the time of the fight and the weapon was rented at an outdoor range.

Perhaps this is a reminder that no matter what, Facebrowser is for the public and users shoulder the responsibility of their own content when government agencies also use the site. Facebrowser will continue to face the daunting taks of pleasing its diverse member base as it goes forward.

Comment: It's nice to see Facebrowser improving. I think the comment about the irrelevant boosted posts is the biggest issue at the moment. So long as it keeps improving from a technical perspective, I think the user base will grow. Time will tell.

Comment: I'm loving it so far, with the hashtags and the cleaner feel. Was hoping LSFD being one of the top most trending and active hashtags/pages would get a mention in the article! ? But aside from that it's been fun. The image quality is annoying but understandable!
